Family had a C band in the 80's. Fun to watch the wild feeds. Inherited a C band dish mounted on the roof when I moved. Used it for a while, then cable moved in. Didn't use the dish much after that. Now scouting around for possible yard installations for a new dish when I'm able to get 1 (Ku band) or 2 (C band) dishes :)

I will just stay with my roof antenna that’s been up there for 40 years. I can pick up 32 channels on it and that is plenty for emergency situations. People will still need backup power for any of this to be any good! Very interesting video!

Sort of. Google Lyngsat. It has a list of what satellites are up there and what is on each transponder. There is no list of what shows are playing, but you can then google each channel to see what they have on.

So, it depends. C-band has a lot of odd ball live feeds, backhauls, and still has some really interesting channels that you can also find on subcarriers in the USA. I love it, but it's not for everyone and certainly can't replace Cable TV if that is your thing.

The radio stations in Carrollton, MO (KMZU-FM, KRLI-FM, KROL-AM & K267BN-FM) have a big C-Band satellite dish that is, more than likely, pointed at 105W.

A friend of mine has a 1.5 meters Ku Band dish and since he can't install a USALS H-H Motor because it's too heavy he uses an actuator and a positioner exactly like yours for the C Band dish. In my case I only have Ku Band dishes and my largest Ku Band dish is 100 cm and has a USALS H-H Motor. I also live in Europe and C Band is not used only Ku Band, there are lots of free channels.

All of this is so interesting. I talked to a guy at work who told me about the good old days when he sold and installed dishes. It got me interested and here I am. I'm wondering where I would even start if I wanted to get into this. What kind of costs am I looking at for getting started from nothing? Where can I find resources on aiming? I love your and Robbie's videos! They certainly make me want to get into it. Thanks for what you do!
@FarpointFarms Жыл бұрын
Your best bet is to drive around the rural areas and look for one of these dishes. Not many use them anymore so if you see one in a yard, leave a note in the mailbox asking if you can buy it from them. This one cost $50 plus the gas to get it. Beyond that? You will need a dish mover. If the people you buy the dish from still have a receiver, use that as a dish mover. That old unit wont work for picking up signals, but it's fine for pointing the dish. Next you'll need a FTA box. You can spend $30.00 and get a decent one that gets 85% of the free signals, or spend $225 and get one that can pick up nearly every free signal. The only other costs are the bag or two of concrete to set the dish, and wiring from the dish to the house. I built this one over the course of a year with the dish first, then the wiring, then the mover, and finally a good receiver. Love it!

Hum, so these huge backyard satellite antenna systems are now mostly for the hobbyist - kind of like sitting around using an old shortwave radio, just to see what you get? In other words, these dish/receivers are pretty much useless for any meaningful content anymore, yes?
@FarpointFarms2 жыл бұрын
Is it a hobby? Yes. Is it useless for people used to Cable TV. No. There are still a lot of FTA channels up there right now that you can watch 24/7. There are also a lot of "Feeds" that come and go at certain times of day. These are commercial free and are streams of all the shows that are sent to affiliates. There are also 1000's of random live feeds of news that also pop up. Lastly there are literally 1000's of radio stations to listen to for free as well. Think XM, but more, and free.

2 thousand channels of radio stations..who are you kidding! How long would it take to go through all of them. From your screen it didn't label what kind of station it was or what type of music it was for. I like the older version of home satellite the analog C Ku band version alot better from the 80s! This is a cultural channel owned by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico). They broadcast primarily foreign movies. 07:57 - Canal del Congreso. This channel is owned by the Congreso de la Unión (Congress of the Union). This channel broadcasts the legislative activities of both chambers, Deputies and the Senate. It's similar to C-SPAN in the United States. 08:01 - This channel called CEPROPIE is owned by the Centro de Producción de Programas Informativos y Especiales (Production Center for Informative and Special Programs). This channel is active only when some programming regarding the President of Mexico. This center is owned by the Secretary of the Interior. 08:12 - This channel called Telebachillerato broadcasts programming regarding to Bachillerato schools. I don't know if Bachillerato has an equivalent in the United States or other countries, but in Mexico you go to these schools before you go to the university. 08:20 - This channel called Capacita TV broadcasts programming related to teachers searching pedagogical trainings. Some of these channels and the Edusat ones are broadcast to some public schools in all the country.

@@FarpointFarms One sidenote: Talking about TV UNAM and Canal del Congreso, you can find them via C-band satellite TV, but in Mexico, since they are owned by a public or federal institution it's mandatory by all Mexican pay TV systems to carry them in the most basic packages. There are more channels that are broadcast in the same way.
