FTP Aluminum Charge Pipe Kit // BMW F20 & F30 N55

Today on JD Cars we are installing an FTP BMW F2X F3X Aluminum Charge Pipe Kit. This aluminum charge pipe kit from FTP is a must if you plan on tuning your car. Somewhat surprisingly, the stock charge pipe from BMW is constructed entirely of plastic. As one could imagine, this isn’t the most durable material to use for a major engine component… The stock charge pipe commonly tears, or even explodes, in cold temperatures/when under high pressure. Overall, this wasn’t a terribly challenging installation. It is time consuming and can be frustrating getting your hands in such a tight space - just be patient. Thanks for watching. I'm running bone stock on my '17 F15 X5 35i and upgraded the charge pipe for an unbranded kit eBay for just over $150 US everything was included. The X5 runs really good and have no complaints. Install took around 30mins and did the spark plugs at the same time since got 50k mi now.

I did everything from the top. Took me like 2-3 hours. I can recommend removing the airfilter and the pipe in the front of the engine bay so you can see the intercooler. I didnt remove the engine cover or the intercooler did work was a lot of pushing and twisting. I put in the bottom Part with both clamps on it the bottom i tightend then i put in the upper part and put them together. The i made Sure that is correctly fitted then remove the without twisting then i could tighten the upper clamp and put everything in with some force. I can recommend using silicon Spray for twisting and Putting the Sensor in. I can recommend thus for everyone who doesnt have an lift or Jack stands

I have the N55 on M235i with this failure (only 25K) Just received my Burger Motorsport pipe this morning. There are a couple decent KZbin on the R&R but they both omit the critical points that you have illustrated about re-install! So your vid is the best assuming that on my model the bolts connecting the two charge pipe parts will be accessible. Had already planned to remove the intercooler as it it relatively easy. You also did the best job showing how to disconnect the inlet pipe and outlet (cold side) intercooler pipes!! Bravo

If you drop it in, and secure the bottom to the FMIC before you secure the top to the TB, you'll have a much easier time.

Great video...one of the hardest install/replacement jobs I have ever done....its stupid hard to get the old charge pipe out....give yourself lots of time and take breaks....this is a frustrating job but worth it. Plastic charge pipe on a performance vehicle....really BMW?

So I got the same Chargepipe and boost pipe for my 2013 F30 328i So boost pipe I connected to intercooler first I had the band already on and slide it all the way down was able to position and slide the band over the connection tighten the band and done never loosened the cooler. Chargepipe I installed the bottom half onto cooler slide the band all the way on took the top half that connects to throttle body onto bottom pipe slide the band up in place but did not tighten yet manipulated onto throttle body then tightened band and reattached everything to pipe. It went very very smooth! And not once did I loosened the intercooler. One Note is where the boost pipe and chargepipe connect to intercooler on both pipes you will see a little notch in the end of both pipe that notch lines up with the (sorry having trouble on what to call it lol) there is a piece on the intercooler that goes into that notch if it does not line up it will not go all the way down so important to make sure the notch lines up and goes down all the way wish I would of had this info. Lol Or i could of missed that part either way got in done!! Thanks for video. I did watch Bryan's video from Kies but have noticed sometimes he leaves out info that would of saved me hours from throwing things across my garage. Hahahaha

Can someone please explain what the vacuum hose on the chargepipe does? Because it goes strait to the air filter intake tube. Does it not make the car loose boost as some of pressure is going strait in to the air filter pipe?

Thanks for the video. I plan on installing my FTP charge pipe on my M235 soon. I'm curious, why not remove the intake and intake crossover pipe to provide access to the lower charge pipe from the top? The area is pretty accessible once intake system is removed.

We’re you able to fit that black tab piece back onto the intocooler side of the pipe? Mine wouldn’t fit back on so I currently have just the retaining ring fully clicked in. It also whines at high throttle, could that maybe be my coupler?

I used a VRSF pipe and intercooler, and no, that black clip will not go back on.

Was there a gasket on the throttle body side when you removed the stock charge pipe? Or when you installed the new charge pipe (w/ gasket inside) did you have to install a gasket on to the throttle body ?

You can get rid of the plastic piece after installing the vrsf charge pipe

DO THIS NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE IT ALREADY. The charge pipe on my ‘17 M2 blew up on track at Sebring a few weeks ago. I thought this would never be an issue since my car was not modified in any way. I was only able to do one half of a track session and my day was over. When I changed the pipe I also upgraded the intercooler. DO THIS FIX NOW OR YOU WILL REGRET IT WHEN THIS HAPPENS AT AN INOPPORTUNE TIME.

On the e90, e92 with the N55 engine, it's a lot easier task and can be done entirely from the top. I see on the F3 it's a bit more complicated because more stuff in the way.

It's holding up very well. No signs of stress or failure. The improvement is slight but noticeable. Definitely confidence inspiring to have a solid aluminum charge pipe in there.

You might have to clear the code

Mine too blew off and even came apart at the throttle body connection. The engine code never came on again after replacement for me and runs smooth. (2013 335i)

@@katieguerrero2958 That is the exact thing that happened to me...same "drive train malfunction" and limp mode. Shocked to see the charge pipe cracked and broken at the throttle body (think this should be a recall imo)...ordered a new charge pipe from VRSF overnight and that fixed everything. Getting the old charge pipe out was tough on my 2013 335i (N55)...just have to be patient and give yourself plenty of time. Also, having a 2nd person help can really come in handy. Car runs very good now. Best of luck!
