Joonas shredding down the drop and then smashing the turn infront of Niko before another quick drop to picking up his camera gear was the nicest line I have ever seen him ski. He just needed to take the turn a little higher, so we could have sprayed Niko in the face. This guy shreds. I still want to see a bit more of Joonas skiing. Good video and glad you guys talked through the situation.

@@LarrysRsAdventures Ha yeah he can be that way at times, but he seems like a good guy. He just seemed like he was frothing too hard here and got a little carried away with the showboating. It’s nice that Joonas called him out and they talked through it, leaving that part in the video helps set a good example. Hard to have those conversations but it’s really important when you’re out with a group

@@loyalkings24 I think he was right to speak up for the other guys by saying not everyone is as comfortable in that terrain as Niko. Niko was right to leave the rope behind, so he at least was thinking about the group and wasn’t totally off in his own world. It worked out and it was nice to see them talk it through. Managing group dynamics is as challenging as managing terrain hazards at times

What a great show of true men settling differences with a bit of rage to start with (throwing the bag), then talking it out like champs. Props for putting this in the video, there are a lot of men in this world who do know how to settle differences efficiently and calmly, this shows how easily it can be done, especially as it was done in a potentially dangerous situation. Ps great vid as per.

Amazing skiing! I am very jealous! By the way, at 8:30 the additional third-hand safety knot is useless with this rappel setup. If the friction device is not extended away from the body and a fall happens, the autoblock knot will be pushed against the friction device and the knot will stop working! Saying this just for your information and safety. For me, a well set-up backup autoblock in the rappel setup is absolutely essential, especially on terrain like this where you can easily slip or something can fall on you from above.
@domesticterrorist483
@domesticterrorist483 Жыл бұрын
Wrong. The back up prissik needs to be below your rap device. It will not be pushed against the belay device as you claim. I have rapped thousands of times and hung on it to strip gear etc and it works perfectly. Or am I misunderstanding what you mean?
@ivo_picha
@ivo_picha Жыл бұрын
@@domesticterrorist483 What I mean is that if the prussik is under the rap device and you let go of the rope, the prussik will be pulled upwards and before it has the chance to tighten and grip the rope, its top will be pushed against the rap device and that will prevent it from tightening. I am not saying that the prussik should go above the rap device, I am saying that to best utilise the prussik you need to extend the rap device like Nikolai is doing.
@Mike-oz4cv
@Mike-oz4cv Жыл бұрын
Good catch. But it’s hard to tell from the video, maybe the prussik is attached to one of the leg loops? Which would probably put it far enough downwards to engage before hitting the belay device. Still silly to not just extend the belay device away from your body.
@zacherys1223
@zacherys1223 Жыл бұрын
@@ivo_picha I see what your saying but if you are properly extending your rappel you can safely put the Prussik in the optimal place (below the rappel device) without running the risk of the prussik coming into contact with the rappel device. Extend your rappel from your harness, attaché prussik to belay loop and you have a much safer system than a prussik above your rappel device

Nobody's perfect, obviously and when one guy pushes a bit too far, another one is there to re-evaluate. Th'ats a mature group of men that I'm seeing. I see a lot of idiots doing amazing things on KZbin but just barely talking about security and not embodying it like you do (checking with the group, sharing the knowledge, recognizing errors, taking precautions, etc.). I'm a mediocre skier, but the interpersonal crux of this episode can happen at all ability levels. There are always stronger skiers, and often some who are less able. It is important for the better ones to remember when they weren't so good and, if they are leading, to foster an atmosphere that invites open conversation and respects everyone's fears and/or apprehensions. Even when lives aren't on the line, a bad experience can set someone back quite a bit, or turn them off to the sport for good.

I dont know if it is intentionall for the video or not but in this entire video Niko is constantly downplaying risks and "peer preassuring" people into taking risks and being nonchalant about it. Ex the "Moms get used to their sons doing dangerous stuff" just send it bro attitude esque. Which is kinda fine for resort skiing but not for big mountain. Come to think of it there are several other instances in other videos as well. An overreliance on avalanche reports, not liking rappeling (assuming he is not comfortable setting them up?), ignoring risks because "I dont have a girlfriend so I can suicide bomb down this slope but the other guys cant". And his brother tomahawking down the mountain after Niko being very lacsidaisical about the risks/difficulties of the run. I applaud you for putting this conversation in a video and opening yourself up for the critisicm and I hope this experience gives you the perspective to be more considerate to the dangers you are putting both yourself and others in.

Hardest thing I have learned in life is what it really takes to "help a beginner", what is easy can be something so vastly different in someone elses mind you really really need to dial yourself all the way back right from the start and let them show their comfort zone first. I helped my girlfriend to start mtbing and just wide multiuse trails was super scary for the first times. A year later and she was laughing how scared she was, if I had taken her to an "easy" trail she would have never tried biking again. NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING. Niko is for sure even unintentionally putting pressure by how he talked about "billy goating" that section, the others know they are good skiers considering their merits and they are obiviously considering it but also well aware of the exposure and technical level required of which their real experience is very limited, all skiing is not the same. I suppose Jonas is a decent skier but an excellent filmer so he really never considered it truly and was annoyed that he was "left" behind so to say. Love Niko, the channel and the general good vibes but I also dont mind serious tones when it is a serious situation.

I agree. These videos are amazing but I think maybe they give some people a little more confidence than they are ready for or then what is safe. Steep skiing is no joke, you have a bad fall, you die. Many famous professional skiers have died doing this stuff. I hope he takes these comments to heart and dials it back a little when appropriate. His personal couli line was sketchy compared to the others. The mountains giveth and taketh away.
