My 82 Wagoneer has a factory plate in the floor… which is amazing

Can some of you folks hep a feller out here plz ? What are the chances that my gas gauge not working is due to a "ground issue", either behind the face of the gauge (I think there is a ground war from the back of the gauge face to somewhere ... right?) and / or the ground at the tank itself ? I'd like to ck this FIRST before I go to the PIA trouble of dropping the tank for a new sending unit. THNKS a lot guys ~

I struggled and struggled to get my gauge to work. Even after replacing the sending unit, it didn't function properly. It showed full until about 1/4 of gas was left and then it dropped. I knew then I had to get gas. I have heard that proper grounding is critical, but that wasn't my problem as I made sure the gauge and sending unit were grounded well. I'd definitely start with making sure all is properly grounded and then go from there.

That took guts. I removed my tank and put it outside before I did any welding near it. Those fumes will get you too.

You did it right. I should not have gambled the way I did!

I just did this on my CJ but I used a nibbler so no sparks and only goes about 1/4 in below the sheet it’s cutting. Even with no body lift had plenty of clearance and didn’t even touch the fuel lines. Still had an extinguisher handy.

Where did you ground your sending unit to and what kind of screw did you use? Thanks.
