Beautiful memories. Departures out of Grand Central early morning was always great. The smell of A1 (Victory) and the Guinea Fowl was magic. Last flight was in 2007, but I swear it is still the same ATC. :)

As I understand it, the Upington runway was built for one reason, to allow SAA flights to reach the US and Europe. Since we were banned from flying over Africa, SAA, especially in their 707's days would use Upington for a refuelling stop allowing them to complete their trips over the mid-Atlantic ocean. They would then fly to Madeira and then either on to the US (New York and Washington) or Europe (Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, Lisbon, Rome and Amsterdam). The 747's really changed that, but I do know of some flights, especially in summer and with heavy loads that still stopped over in Upington. It also served as an away Air Force base during the Bush War. The NASA thing only came later with the launch of the space shuttle, but I'm not even sure that is true.

many people run them dry on purpose on long trips.

Yeah. This was my first time and it happened unexpectedly. Subsequently I have occasionally run the tips dry on purpose when flying cross country. It is easy to manage when you expect it …
