Taking advantage of lower fuel prices. Now is the time to store. Single wall tanks are more economical than double wall but we encourage the tanks to be kept as constant as possible.

Growing up, when we would go visit my family that lives out in the country, they all had gas and diesel tanks like this, or the gravity ones on tall stands. I've always planned on having them, it just seems excessively convenient to basically have your own gas station at your house. I definitely would love to have enough fuel on hand to avoid buying it during the peak prices in summer, but not so much that it goes bad before using it all.

Using a automatic cutoff nozzle is a first mistake. I used to work for a trucking company with a terminal within 2 miles of the Canadian border. After dropping and picking up the load heading south I pulled up to the single diesel pump at 3 AM to fill my tractor. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the fuel nozzle was frozen?. Every time I squeezed the nozzle it immediately kicked off. The temperature at the time was minus 40 degrees. I finally had to open the passenger door window run the nozzle and hose into the cab and stick the nozzle down on the floor bye the heater outlet. 45 minutes to get it thawed out and after pulling it back outside it still wouldn't deliver fuel. I called the dispatcher and told him what was happening and he woke up the mechanic who showed up 20 minutes after I hung up the phone and unscrewed the nozzle and screwed on a manual old school nozzle which worked just fine. My next trip to that terminal the manual nozzle was still on the pump with a new sign which read " any driver who doesn't hold the manual nozzle to fuel his truck will be fired on the spot. Use only your fingers to hold the nozzle open." The next day after the sign went up one driver was canned after he fell asleep with a piece of wood to keep the nozzle open so he could climb back into the truck to stay warm. He dumped just over 3000 gallons of fuel before he woke up. The pump was rated at 65 gallons a minute before the automatic nozzle was replaced. After that everybody fueled properly and when spring arrived the automatic nozzle went back on the hose. It ain't fun when your about to run out of fuel cause the damn automatic nozzle is frozen when it's colder than you ever want to be out in. My second trip took me less than 8 minutes to fill both 300 gallon fuel tanks. The only pain in the rear was waiting the first minute for the gelled fuel in the pump and hose to be pushed out and the warm (50 degrees ) fuel from the buried tank to thaw out the dispenser and gelled fuel in the hose. Then it flowed like summer time. The gelled fuel that went into my tanks instantly melted because I equipped my tractor with arctic fox fuel heaters in each fuel tank and kept the fuel at 40 degrees or warmer even at minus 40 or colder. Food for thought

Just an idea for ya... your shed that you put the tanks in is nice! I love the roof on it! When I was a manager at the ethanol plant, we used 'explosion proof' walls... I don't really know how 'explosion proof' it was lol, but I do know that we had two cement walls that were ran parallel for each side that were filled with rebar and concrete. The concrete parallel walls had a 6" space between them. (||) So in theory, if there was an explosion, the first wall should crumble, but the second wall would keep structural support and the metal roof, like the one that you have constructed, would blow straight up and off. I know that it's more expensive using concrete blocks etc., but with that amount of fuel... I would hate for anything bad to happen to anyone. Good job though.

The dirty little secret of fuel storage is you have to keep rotating it to keep it viable. Fuel turns to sludge faster than most people realize. Storage with Stabil addative is about 1 yr max. I can't see how you can execute a FIFO inventory management system with this setup. Recommend you choose ONE type of fuel and batch rotate between the three tanks.

+Scott Wolford For gas yes but diesel can store longer. As for fuel types you will always need gas for chain saws/mowers/other small equipment along with smaller things like dirt bikes and quads that can get around when roads are blocked. For diesel you have the better generators, large trucks and farm equipment so having a mix of fuels is still needed. Add in that this could be their everyday fuel if they are in the middle of nowhere. Where I am if the local gas station is down its a 20 mile drive to the next one.

Bio fuels such as ethanol last less than regular gasoline. However, there are small stills available that alow you to produce fuel from waste vegetable oil. If you collect it from restaurants you could give yourself some fuel independance in the meantime and a viable system for longterm. Diesel needs to be used within a year or you risk Deisel Bug. A big problem for boat users here in the UK where they do not use their boats enough. Unlike me as a live aboard continuous cruiser who has to keep moving. It has been exacerbated by EU rules stating that diesel has to be 50% bio fuels as they break down faster and generally have a higher water contents. This all helps the agae ("Diesel Bug" )to form and the sludge will fairly ruin your day if it gets into your engine! Additives only work to a limited degree. You cannot expect them to keep the fuel pristine forever. So better that you use the fuel up and refill when you get to 50 or 60%.

Really like the new intro, Scott. Nice, clean and orderly install, though it looks a bit tight in the shed for getting to the manual pump. Fuel storage, especially in bulk amounts, is a good prep against volatility in the market, allowing purchase when prices are lower and utilizing on hand supply when they are higher. Also, it is ideal for grid down situations where commercial sales of fuel would be unavailable.

What about grounding for static discharge generated by those pumps they are using? This has to be the stupidest fuel storage arrangement ever. I would have filters on each of those pumps I've done a few tanks now for the company I work for its surprising how much debris is in a new tank. Have a GPI pump on one of the slip tanks it works okay but its slow they are no were near as good as a Fill Rite.

Keep an eye on your diesel- you get algae growth started in there and it's pretty tough to completely clear it out. From what I understand, the most recent formulation for the ULSD gives it about 9 months before becoming unusable. Rotate that stock and keep it topped off with a quality additive.

I've noticed a lot of comments about ethanol... ethanol is corrosive because of the acidity (to prevent infection in the process of making booze... combined with CO2 that it produces when it's created...), so tanks that ship the ethanol have to be lined with glass and why it's not piped anywhere.

+GrandsonofKong Not sure about the tanks, but different states require different levels of fuel, specific amounts you can purchase at a time, fuel storage tags (must be kept on the tanks). Some states are exempt from tax if you are zoned agriculture, which I am. If you live in colder climates and have diesel tanks then you need tank heaters. If you intend to store long-term then you need fuel preparation mix. Gas is organic and will break down, so you need to read up on petroleum fuels and how to best store your supplies.

I once asked the guy at a Station in Oregon(one of two states where you can't pump your own gas), exactly how much Ethanol was in the gas...and he said they are never told only that it can be "up to 10%" was the sticker says. All conduits with seals as per NEC (NFPA 70) and no arching devices unless rated for the classification. They will also need a grounding means for the fuel truck to clamp onto.
