Building a Homestead Fueling Station

Howard and I build a shed for a diesel storage tank.
With two diesel tractors, a fuel tank and pump will make things much more convenient. The Ford 3000 and Kubota L4701 both have fuel caps in the middle of the hood. This makes it a challenge when wrangling heavy 5 gallon cans. Plus there's always some spillage. A gas station type pump makes everything much cleaner.
My dad and I came across this used fuel tank and pump at an estate sale. It's a 150 gallon tank that's just a little too big for my needs if full, but just about right with a couple of drums in it. I made sure to put some diesel conditioner/biocide in it for longer term storage. I used Power Service biocide. I put about 115 gallons of off road diesel fuel in it. That should last a while.

Damn he went old school with that post hole digger. I’ll give you props for that man! I’m in my late 40’s and remember that was the only was to set posts on the farm. I finally got wise and bought an auger for my tractor because I can’t get any of my kids to do any manual labor.

Looks like a great job. and I'm sure this will be a great convienence. Couple of suggestions for down the road. First a small rainproof cabinet. Keep in it your rags for cleaning the dipsticks for checking your engine oil and hydraulic fluid levels. Good habit is to check them both every time you fuel up. Also keep in it one of those oil spill kits from any of the industrial supply places. they come in a five gallon bucket and if you do spill, it's right there handy. As for the electric pump motor. One of those "solar generators" with a cheap harbor freight solar panel up on the roof to keep it charged. Make a shelf for that inside your storage cabinet. about a hundred bucks for the solar panel new, and couple of hundred bucks for the battery box with built in inverter. Used solar panels are way cheaper if you can find one, and if all this needs to do is run the pump for thirty minutes per day, more than you need. Press the button to turn on the inverter, pump your fuel, and once ypu finish, they typically come with an auto shutoff when there is no power being used for longer than an hour or so. Maybe wire up a couple of motion detector 12 volt lights to the DC port. Those a commonly always on, but check to confirm that. Hang those lights up under the canopy and fueling after dark becomes way less hassle. Lastly, pour a concrete slab under the tank, and underneath where you usually park to refuel. slope the slab to a center drain, and have that drain lead to a sump tank nearby that is bigger than the fuel tank. It will fill up everytime it rains, so rig a dip pipe so that when it reaches overflow level, it sucks the water from the bottom, leaving any spilled oil floating inside the sump tank for easy cleanup. This will save future you so much hassle, paperwork and grief from all the government agencies when you have a bigger spill. (and eventually, there will be a spill.) it will also collect all the little drips and splashes from normal operations. Leave an air vent and pumpout pipe aboveground so the disposal contractor just has to suck out the spilled fuel from the sump tank. Way less expensive than paying a disposal contractor to dig up and cart away all the tons of contaminated soil. There are all kinds of safety rules around having 120 volt power around a fueling station. Depending on your local laws, they may apply to you. They are mostly aimed at commercial gas stations, oil refineries and the like. Running the thing with an extension cord sidesteps most of the special rules for electricity, as they deal with keeping gasoline vapors from accumulating and then igniting or exploding. Diesel is much better about that.

I agree , as my dad taught me never use teflon tape on any fuel fittings including compressed gases. If you can slide that drum of fuel into the tractor bucket, strap it and raise it higher than the tank and it will suck that drum out in no time. Just a suggestion, it's your channel and you can do whatever you want! lol..

I got a 100 gallon transfer tank and built a skid for it. Sure beats 5 gallon cans. Load it up in the back of my truck to fill it and use the tractor to put it back in its place. I like your idea of having it under a roof, I have been covering the pump to keep it out of the weather. My L3901DT gets an ave of 2.3 HPG. This ave is over 24 tanks.

Don't use teflon tape on fuel oil lines, either Bits of the tape can get into the oil pump and clog everything up. Oil burner pump manufacturers warn that this can void the warranty. Fuel oil is basically the same as diesel.

@@reecenewton3097 Fuel oil is diesel. only differents is off road fuel they add a red dye to it, as off road is not road taxed fuel oil used on the road is clear and road taxed, if you put even a gallon of colored fuel into your road truck any time in its life and the DOT DIPS YOUR TANK IT DONT MATER HOW LONG AGO YOU PUT THAT DYED FUEL IN, THEY WILL pick it up on there dip, and your charged, funny how so many people think there is a deferents between fuel oil and diesel

2 suggestions. Find a petroleum company to deliver bulk. It will be cheaper and already have biocide in it. Second, lock everything up. Nozzle, tank fill est. If people start figuring out you have bulk, your fuel will start growing legs. I didnt realize how had the theft was until I put locks on and compared taxes from 2 different years. Not having locks cost me almost 600 gallons over the first year alone.

Love your videos. Be sure to mount a fire extinguisher a safe distance from the fuel valve. Just a warning about thieves -- we had gas cans stolen in our neighborhood, several homes. I lost 4, myself. Had to replace them at $30 each (incl. $10 for the nozzles). To keep them from being stolen, I ran an anchored cable through them and padlocked the looped ends. I hope you never have such thievery in your rural area.

Weld yourself a couple of chain hooks to the top of the frontloader bucket. Put one facing forward and one facing back (in case you need more power at the expense of less height and distance by lifting with the back of the bucket) and just either side of dead center, offset by 1/2 chain width. That will maximize your lift power, minimize wheelies (stoppies, really), and save you hours of wrapping chains around the bucket while breathing exhaust, and make it real easy to set length. Plus you get more power from curl than from lift and the bucket will spin inside the chain if its just wrapped. When pulling roots I lift til it wont lift anymore then finish the job with curl. Or at least do a wheelie with curl if Ive bitten off more than I can chew.

I too have the L 4701, I bought mine new 3 1/2 yrs ago, I’d like to get the front hydraulics ran for a grapple once I get this crazy thing paid for! I’ve been happy with mine, while I did not need a tractor quite this big, the price point from a smaller 2501 and the 4 ft implements was only 5 grand to the bigger tractor and 6 ‘ implements, so I jumped up to the 4701, also the working cruise does not come standard on smaller tractors and the working cruise was important to have , good luck amigo!

It needs a no smoking sign too. and the gallons it will hold. A lot of states require a containment to put it in that will hold more than the tank will hold. All the tanks i have ever set were not put in level. the pump end was always 2 inches higher to keep from sucking up the drugs in the bottom. Set your down tube from your pump 2 inches off the bottom of the tank too. you also need a gauge stick and some water paste to check for water. The tank its self will make water from condensation. Just a couple things i learned that may help you.

My friend used a friend's private airstrip to park his airplane where he kept a 2 or 3 hundred gallon fuel tank. To power the fueling he installed a schrader valve and used a small air-tank to pressurize the fuel tank. It only took a few psi to refuel his plane. He used a regular cylinder shaped bulk tank and it didn't bulge from the pressure but an old propane tank would have been better. He released the pressure after the refueling so the heat from the sun would not cause the tank to over-pressurize.

Damn Wes, your pole setting skills are second to none ! If I ever get a tractor like your's, I'll know who to call to get a fuel shed built. W & H Builders. I think using a battery box for the motor is a pretty good idea. I don't think the motor will draw it down very quickly. It's my guess you'll have to recharge it after every fourth or fifth time. You might have to buy a diesel pickup to make that set up really worth while.

Can't use off-road diesel in a road vehicle: Big Brother doesn't get his tax and will get quite angry.

Thanks, Jim! It's easier with the bucket. The boom pole on on the 3000 got the job done in the past, though.

I see our 'off road' price is approximately the same as yours. Good job on the fuel shed.

Most poles aren't plumb on the sides. Stand back and use a plumb line lined up with the center.

This isn't a home, it's a shed. No need for it to be perfect, just "close enough for gov't work!" (LOL)

I just check all 4 sides and try to get it close. It's a shed.

A little surprised you did not go for an elevated tank that could use a gravity feed for when the power fails, as it surly will at some time. Size your feed wire correctly when you run it from the shop, you get a substantial amperage drop with under sized wire if you run a long line. If undersized wire, the pump will work, for a while, until it burns itself out. The motor is designed to run on specified amps.

greetings; think on this: install a cable lift or some type of lift to lower your tank for delivery from supplier and then hoist it for gravity dispensing to your equipment. nifty, huh? but you can go the hand pump route and be like everyone else.........g

Check with who ever delivers diesel to farmers in your area. Here we have southern states and they do free delivery if you get atleast 100 gallons.
