I really think it's going to be OK. The plastic is MUCH thicker than I was expecting. I'm getting zero deflection in the handles under full load. And it seems like the handle is even thicker than the rest of the tank. I would imagine since it's gravity fed they would have to assume people will be hanging them in some cases. It looks like they took that into consideration. I'll be sure to update you all if something goes wrong!

Not even for the plastic but the winch part also, it’s holding all that weight locked in place. Eventually I’d be worried that brake would break and let them crash down. So far so good. I’ve filled it twice and it’s great getting 13 gallons at one shot kzbin.infoUgkx-vlHjazTv30m_UAq9Ht-fuPo2jBx7tTx . Awesome job, I'd be worried knowing I have so much fuel hanging by a couple of wires in my garage, I think I'd store them sitting on the floor, just lift them up to use them, make it so you can lift just one at a time, then back down when you've filled up.

I use those tanks also. Don't lift them up but did put tire air chuck in the top of each so I could shoot in 5 lbs of air pressure that lets me shoot the gas in at any height. The trial and error part came in when I first used rubber pull thru air chuck which the ethanol destroyed in two days so I changed to bolt thru truck version that have been in them for at least 7 years. Have one at the airport so I can get Car gas to put in airplane and one at home to fill lawn tractor and generator and various other power equipment.

Incredible job sir. Clean execution! I've been using 2 of these same containers for a few years now. I built a platform attached to a dolly to make them easier to raise up and down when fueling. Never had to use them till recently when the power and water went out here in Texas. 3 days without both and people started to panic. Everything from groceries to gas was gone! I gave myself a pat on the back for planning ahead and decided to fuel up. I opened up the venting knob and began to fill up my car. (They fill very slowly) after about 6 to 7 minutes it occurred to me that the fumes were extremely strong and thought "what if the pilot lit right now on my water heater? Or the power came on and my thermostat started my furnice? 😨 Scared the daylights out of me. So, now I'm conflicted. Still want them in my garage for the easy access but not sure how safe I actually am.

So sorry you all took such a beating down there with that weather. Just crazy. I completely understand your concerns about storing that much fuel inside but the way I look at it is because it stinks so bad it's not like it has a chance to build up to a level that's dangerous before you notice it. Not the safest thing in the world but your odds are still worse that you'll die in a car accident vs something like that happening!

As an engineer, we have all made silly mistakes, some of them take hours to figure out. It's part of life! That said; yikes that's a lot of fuel in one spot! My immediate thoughts are, is the motor on that winch sealed (no sparks)? Gas vapors are very heavy and fall. Also I would color that diesel handle (whole tank) an obviously different color, it only takes one sleepless night and rushed task to mix things up. And maybe add some good fire suppression of some sort. In the off chance that something lights up, that's going to be one hell of a fire with 45 gal of fuel, and plastic tanks will melt open in a flash.

Yea it is/good call. Only issue is with my setup in the corner, I didn't have enough room to pull enough cable through between the pulley and the winch to get the cans up high enough. Having them on the can's gave me the extra cable room needed to pull twice the amt of cable.

i use 1 those winches in my mower shop to lift fronts or backs of riding mowers up to take blades off or wheels and change belts and stuff. i made a new 20 amp circuit and cut plug off and hard wired it. i added a 20 amp keyed light switch on the circuit so i can lock it out. i lengthened wires to controller so i could mount it to wall further way as hoist is in doorway of big sliding doors. your idea is real cool. i just dont keep fuel in shop or garage. an outdoor tank on stilts would be a better solution. but then you would need a truck with tank on it to fill up at gas station to transfer fuel to tank. but then you might as well skip the tank on stilts and just fuel directly from truck. only thing id do different than you is build it on outside wall of garage so no vapors inside.

photos.app.goo.gl/ftqNtZTs7fqhtjpo9 Yes, here is a diagram overlayed onto the first rigging set up. It is much simpler than the solution he used because it does not introduce 2X the equipment, material, and moving parts into the setup. The only limitation in this setup is that you have to ensure that the winch line block is 2x the height of the max load line lift height to avoid having the winch line pulley bottom out to the winch (2:1 advantage comes from winch line moving 2x the distance of the load movement). This would work here though as the gas cans are only being lifted about halfway up the wall.

I saw another video in which a guy found a brass insert with an air valve that fit the filler. He used an adjustable air pump to keep about 4lbs pressure in the tanks that made a much better flow rate. maybe?

Do that with a 55 gallon steel drum and diesel. With gas, its a atom bomb waiting to happen. Or its a good way to feed drain oil to a heater.

Bought mine about 15 years ago from Costco ($80) and got rid of the hose and trigger spout. Their cheap hose kinks easily and by replacing with a slightly larger I.D. solvent rated hose it increased fuel flow by nearly 50%. I just use the valve at the bottom as my on/off.

The reason for only 14gal and not 15gal is so you have room for the gas expansion when it heats up.

Two things. Have it lift a platform and not the cans themselves. And add safety toe off in the raised position so if the winch ever fails it doesn’t come crashing down

I have a tank like that and got fed up with using the pump handle. I bought a battery operated gas pump ( Terapump, about $35-65 on amazon) and it works great. Fills all my stuff fast and it even has a auto shutoff.

Since we also live in a hurricane prone area, this would be much better then the 6, 5 gal cans we use now for the season. I do have some concerns though. The cans in the back of car is a huge no no. They could easily get charged from the carpet then when going to fill discharge to pump and your car would be on fire. I would fill in the rear of the truck. They say that they should be actually on the ground when filling but they say a lot of stuff. Second thing I think I would do would be to have a fold out shelf that could fold out when fully raised then lower the cans down so most weight is sitting on shelf. Not sure how I feel about hanging them from the handles for long periods of time. This is a great idea and has me thinking of something similar now. Thanks for making this video. Also, how did the motor auto stop? Was that simply all the cable used? Thanks

Your fueling method is far cooler than mine. I got tired of picking up a 5 gallon, not pourable due to government interference, gas can and trying to make the EPA spout dispense fuel. I bought a $20 battery electric fuel pump that fits inside the opening on top of the can and it comes with a flimsy looking hose that transfers the fuel just fine. Either way works, but I like yours better.

That's an amazing system love it but have a few suggestions for version 2.0 if you ever make improvements. 1. Either move the motor to prevent interference with the right gas can, or put a shroud over the winch to allow the can to just slide over it. 2. See if there is a yellow can available for Diesel fuel to help prevent accidentally putting gas in a diesel engine and vice versa. 3. See if you can find a Nema 7 rated Winch to reduce your explosion risk due to vapor leaks or a spill during the operation of the winch motor. NEMA 7 is an enclosure rating that ensures no hazardous materials enter an area where there is electricity that could cause an explosion.

You might be able to make this setup with 1 cable by fixing the cable to the 2x4 on the right side. This would make a block and tackle. It might not work as the load may shift though. I would be concerned about static discharge and fueling in a garage. It might not be a problem with small fill ups, but the gas tank is suspended and not grounded.
@Trialnerror
@Trialnerror Жыл бұрын
You could but yes, this is only an even load for a short time when everything is full. After that it's never in balance so this setup keeps everything level.

It will but it takes FOREVER to get even a gallon out. If you're using it for leaf blowers and weed whackers, that would probably be OK. For larger tanks, you need to gravity feed.

Your aftermarket nozzle - I had the same problem. It's the rubber gasket. Take it out, look at it. You have to put it around the nozzle. There's a groove for it. Then it'll seal correctly. I've had no more problems with it. Cool setup. However I'm worried about using hooks on the plastic. It wasn't engineered for it. I'm afraid it'll split or bend and fail. Make sure you inspect them often. I've had gasoline containers fail on me before. It's no fun coming into a garage or shed when that happens.
