In 1996, TMF VJ Sylvana Simons conducted an interview with the American hip hop group, The Fugees, consisting of Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill. The group had risen to fame in the mid-1990s for their unique blend of reggae, R&B, funk, and hip hop, which distinguished them from the popular gangsta rap of the time. Their second studio album, "The Score", had placed them at the forefront of pop music, reaching number one on the US Billboard 200 and spawning hit singles like "Ready or Not", "Fu-Gee-La", and "Killing Me Softly".
During the interview, the group discussed their musical influences, which included Haitian music and jazz, and their desire to use their music to convey important messages, particularly related to social justice and politics. They also talked about their approach to incorporating live instrumentation into their music, which was still relatively uncommon in hip hop at the time.
The Fugees had already won critical acclaim for their debut album, "Blunted on Reality", which fused political hip hop, jazz, and neo soul. Their success continued with "The Score", which was certified 7x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and earned them a nomination for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.
Despite their success, the group disbanded in 1997 to pursue solo careers. They briefly reunited in 2004 and again in 2021 for reunion tours. Together, The Fugees have won two Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for International Group, and have been recognized as one of the best-selling hip hop groups of all time. "The Score" was ranked among the 500 Greatest Albums by Rolling Stone, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named "Ready or Not" one of the Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
