People go for “entertainment”over quality content. Watched a vid a while back to get some info on the GFX 100s and the guy and his buddy walk around outside for almost 30 mins just talking about the camera and the 80 1:7.???????? Then posted some pics that looked like they were shot with a Canon 10D on a bad day........but he has all these fans🤔🤔🤔

Btw, I do not have the 80mm f1.7 but I am salong time pentax 67 user among many others systems and I think the 110mm is absolutely the single best lens I’ve used. I realize it’s just one tool among many others. But if you have ever switched from a western push saw blade to a Japanese pull saw blade, it make you realize tools matter! Wow !!! What a great review!!!! I’ve seen so many about the 80 and about the 110. But of course the real issue is how do they compare. You def knocked it out ic the park. You did not discuss handling tho. I use the canon 85mm f1.8 which I like because it is so light. (And seriously affordable, and works fine with square crop btw). Interesting look! Thank you for your presentation. When they are both at f2 and balanced composition, they are quite similar. I can understand that frustration made you not bother trying to frame balance for comparison. I found that seeing crops of 8 inch’s below navel and 8 inches above the head for the 110 not ideal but then much tighter crop head to belly on the 80 lost me a bit as the compression differences are further exaggerated. I’m sure that as you stated, if you only concentrated on one focal length that the results would again be different. I’m loving my 80mmf1.7. So far. I am used to an 85mm on FF but paying attention to the zones in the image circle and the way they affect objects really slows you to control the way faces and bodies present foreshortening and creating the life vs fashion mag look. I was going to get the 110 but wanted to try something new. I have been experimenting with a Nikkor 180 2.8 Ed-prime to fill the void and wow it really is fantastic on the 50s. I was too impatient for the 100s so I will stick with this combo for now with the 45mm for the other end.

Yea, the 110mm seems like it's rendering better, with more pleasing compression. I did some senior pics with a 200mm f/2 on an APS-C body, and that's too much compression. Lots of people love it though. 80mm on MF doesn't seem like enough, though normal people won't notice.

Hey, that review earned your 4980. sub ;) I'm on the waiting list for the GFX100s, hence I can't yet test anything myself. What I especially like of your review: It is crystal clear that one can't pick a wrong one between those two. I was sure to buy the 80mm and then watched your video about ten times, now I'm quite sure, I want the better AF as I find it disturbing (as you, too) to loose shots on a "bad" AF. Also I'm used to the ~85mm focal length (FF) with my XF56 f1.2 and my X-T3. But the GF 80 (=63mm FF focal length) is much more versatile in non-portrait shooting. And cheaper. And lighter. Aaaaaargh :)

In your opinion, why do you think they did not go with a linear motor? Was it to reduce price or size? Does size matter that much in this type of work? And would price be that different, as it's already an expensive, premium lens? Are there any benefits at all to DC motor to justify them "ruining" an otherwise great lens? I'm sure no one enjoys the focusing, rather putting up with it...

Great review, I'm a bit puzzled by the DoF. Mathematically speaking, a 110mm f2 should have a narrower DoF than a 80mm f1.7, but my eyes confirm what you're saying about the falloff.
@SNAPAVELI
@SNAPAVELI 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes I agree, 80 has far less in focus when framed identically. It’s a gorgeous look when it nails focus that is
@Max160200
@Max160200 3 жыл бұрын
Ken, that’s not totally true, the DoF depends of 3 things: the focal length, the aperture... and also the distance between the lens and the subject. ;) In fact, when we want to frame identically with different focal lengths, we come closer to the subject with the shorter focal length. And when we do so, the DoF is often shallower, that’s why we tend to close a lot the aperture in macro photography and the background is still very blurred. Another point is the compression: when we stand far from the subject (often with a long focal length), the subject appears more flat and more detached from the background. But when we stand closer to the subject, the impression of volume is more present (even too much when we are too close, the face is then distorted). That’s why in the video, the 2 eyes are often in focus with the 110 whereas often only 1 eye is in focus with the 80. The academic rule in portrait is to shoot at 3 meters/10 feet from the subject, it’s the distance when we have a good balance between volume effect and distortion.
@cactus22minus1

As Maxime pointed out, his distance from the model is deferent in order to maintain similar framing- you can’t compare falloff and attribute the differences to the lens alone

Question: Which lens should we get, the 110 or the 80? Answer: yes.

What are your quick initial thoughts on the RF 85 vs the GF 80? So tempted to get another GFX for the 80 😆
@SNAPAVELI
@SNAPAVELI 3 жыл бұрын
Wait till next week! Honestly I got my best shots with the rf 85 1.2, it’s just me being comfortable shooting faster and that focal length is magic to me. But.... the gfx files are so much better as raw files, there is no comparison there. That’s why I own both systems

@@SNAPAVELI next week is so far away! :p. Ya, I feel you. I have had GFXs a few times and keep selling them because its just so damn slow. But I always miss it because of how amazing the files are haha. How slow that 80 seems to be is helping me resist getting one again though.

Yes! Jumping back and forth between systems on a shoot I feel like I went back 10 years in speed. I’d wait till the first lens firmware update to see how much they can improve it. The blackout on the gfx 50 drives me nuts. Hopefully the 100s won’t be so bad

@@SNAPAVELI ya for real lol. I got rid of my 50R after the last time I shot with it side by side with my R5. I just quickly stopped using it and finished with almost all R5 shots lol. I would like to see how much better the 100s feels though. I rented the 100 once and it felts pretty good speed wise, but I didn't use it enough to get past the initial excitement to really be sure.

110 wins. The 80 is more like a 50mm view on FF. Never liked a 50mm but do love 75-90mm field of view.

Nicely done, the AF on the 80 makes me wonder if I could live with it. I hear there has been a recent firmware update to the 80 which has made a big improvement, could I ask which FW the 80 was on for this? Thanks

i’m seriously thinking about the gfx50r used instead of the R6...any general thoughts? Portraits, occasional weddings and occasional concert. Details and good shadow information is important to me. Great videos, TY!

Thank you! Well I own 50r and r5. I love the output of the 50r! R5 is really good now with much improved dynamic range over eos r. I think r6 has great dynamic range as well. The 50r , continuous af is pretty much non existent, you will be stuck in single shot, non moving subjects ( unless you stop way down ) you will need an nd filter for mid day stuff. I’ve had no luck with anything but static subjects. Unfortunately I think the 100 or 100s is the only option for anything that requires continuous af, and still it will be hit and miss. I never miss with my r5.... just something to think about
