@roborovskihamsters Nikon has the P500 for $399, and Canon the SX30 $439. We selected the Fuji because we love the manual zoom, and the dynamic range of the HS20. Jordan @ The Camera Store

The much smaller sensor on the HS20 allows it to have a huge zoom range in such a small package. Of course, the smaller sensor does mean that the HS20 will be worse in low light and have a larger area in focus than with a DSLR. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

@dannycurtean This was shot with the 5D Mark II, mostly with the Zeiss 35mm F2 ZE. It's a fantastic lens, bokeh, colour and contrast are absolutely top notch, especially for the price. We also used a Canon 17-40 in the wide shot where Chris tries to macro with the 300-800. Jordan @ The Camera Store

The problem with cameras with small sensors like most compacts and bridge cameras is that so many MPX in small sensors cause them to produce too much noise at low ISO, and also the loose of fine detail.

@Chippy569 The video was in no way meant to be comprehensive, as you can see it is described as a 'tongue in cheek' video. Of course the D700 image quality/bokeh/AF performance destroys the HS20, but main point we wanted to make is how excessive someone's full frame kit would need to be to cover the same focal range. We will have more serious videos coming out soon, but this one was designed primarily to entertain. Jordan @ The Camera Store

The HS20 EXR is not a great camera for amateurs like myself. The automatic mode is absolutely useless and simply can't take a decent photo. However, if you have bought one of these cameras and are feeling helpless here is a tip. 1) Select the EXR mode on the dial. 2) Press the menu/ok button to access the EXR Mode(at the top of the screen) then select D-Range Priority. 3) Then the next step is to select ISO 400. Wow, what a difference!. Please like so other people see this :)

Or set to ISO 100, choose Program, set image quality to Fine. If shooting birds, animals, or stationary objects, use Spot focus. Flowers, or anything close up should be shot in Macro or Super Macro (don't forget to turn it off). Great little cameras.

@TheSupasimon We wanted a zoom lens that would give a 720mm field on full frame. There's only one lens that does that. The point of the video was to disregard crop factors and show you what a real 720+mm lens looks like. Jordan @ The Camera Store

I have never used a compact superzoom. But I have used a DSLR for a decade or so. A big downside I can see to superzooms is that you can't remove the lens. I like being able to change lenses on my DSLR. Not that long ago I picked up a Holga lens. You can do that with a point and shoot. I also recently got a new Nikon DSLR body. It's nice that I can use it with the lenses I already own. The other nice thing is that since the lens and body are separate; I am not screwed if one breaks. If the body breaks I switch to my backup body while the other is being fixed. Same with lenses.

The full frame Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 is a very special and unique lens. It weighs nearly 6Kg. Under sunlight and when you are not interested for shallow depth of field, cameras with very small sensors permit zoom lenses with extremely large focal length range like the Fujifilm HS20 or the Nikon P900 or the recent Nikon P1000 which can reach 3000mm (35mm equivalent) focal length. However there is a catch. With poor lighting all small sensors suffer from high ISO noise. Digital processing inside the camera can fix a little the noise but usually the photo becomes soft. Also with very small sensors the shallow depth of field is impossible. Shallow depth of field and very low image noise are highly important in professional photography and differentiates amateur photos from professional ones.

You're right, if one can't be bothered to carry a hand towel in their back pocket why not just lay that thing down in gavel, dirt or on concrete? There's no practical difference between a lens hood and a kickstand.

If you want a 30X zoom in a small camera, its going to have a small sensor. A small sensor means large depth of field. If you were looking for shallow depth of field, a DSLR or mirrorless camera is the way to go. But I'd still say Fuji makes the best superzooms.

I thoroughly enjoyed that video. I have 3 ??s 1. What would you use that huge lens for? 2. How much did the [big] lens actually weigh? 3. What is the zoom range on the big lens [if you said it, then I just missed it]. I also liked the quality of the video itself and the interaction between you two is relaxed and [seemingly] unrehearsed or wooden. Looking forward to watching more of your vids. Thanks for a fun and informative post. b/b)O(

@TheCameraStoreTV You can put a 3rd party lens on the GH2 or use the 100(200)-300(600)mm, which is pretty close. The 100-300mm is an amazingly small lens for it's range and quality.

@Lynxtpm Thanks for the tip, but the HS20 is now 16MP and HS10 is only 10MP so I would think that should make it with better quality. I'm actually a fan of Fujifilm cameras so I was very disappointed with its image quality, just not what I expected for $450. I hope they keep improving but for now I'm using a Nikon D3100 and so far is as good as advertised. Overall I'm not knocking the camera, just not made for me.

Do all Fuji zooms lose the sound when you zoom, or make loud motor noises?.. when I bought my SX30 the Fuji I looked at was manual zoom and the ring was tight for adjusting, the SX30 was an easy choice at the time. Like I said in another comment I will be waiting to check out the SX50HS before I buy another camera. I do love the color the Fuji produces, Ive always thought they were a great camera for the money.

This is an interesting comparison, but quite deceptive to those who don't know better. Obviously a lightweight compact zoom compared to Nikon's big lens is going to have a "carry around" advantage. But who in their right mind would not use a tripod with a large lens? A few importan things were omitted in the image comarison test: ISO, f/stop, manual v. Auto settings, focus mode, noise reduction settings, image quality settings and whether the images are JPEG or RAW.

what I don't get to know about HS20, in video mode I mean, if it is possible to make manual focusing or memorize a single point of focusing, I repeat in video mode, by the help of a single button in and out manual focusing or it should be made by menù and much more important for me is to know if it is possible to make manual exposition so if I record a video of a human person in front of a white wall well the person could appear underexposit and so I want a way to correct the face exposition

I bought the Fuji HS20 exr last year and found it to be an amazing camera for the price here in the UK. It's brimming with a massive variety of tools to help you get the very best from your photographs. The results would be very hard to beat, even with a DSLR. Photography is subjective anyway and I can see from my results that it delivers much more than you could expect from a camera at this price. Ultimately, it's all down to the skills of the photographer, so go for it

The best image quality for the HS20EXR may be found "outside" of the Auto settings and by setting the AF mode to "center." I've found that the high sharpness and high noise reductions settings work well together as they tend to preserve detail and control digital aritfacts. Using the viewfinder instead of the LCD screen to focus and take pictures also ensures high image quality. The HS20EXR is a very good MP per $ value.

I know this is a four year old comment, but I'm glad I found it! I just got the HS20 used at a pawn shop for a buck twenty! I'm no pro, so it's a great camera for me-- and personally, I think it takes mostly beautiful shots. I've had it in low light morning forest conditions, shooting in auto focus (yep, total noob) and my pictures have come out beautifully. In any case, I'm glad I scrolled past all the wankers--I've copied your comment in to Google Keep and I'm going to experiment tomorrow.

In terms of price, convenience and practicality, fuji makes some excellent bridge cameras that can meet the needs of beginners and hobbyists. I used one of them before making the switch to DSLR and for the price it wouldn't be possible to have a better camera. They aren't the be all and end all, but they certainly have a place on the shelves.

@aeiq1219 I just bought the Fuji HS10 about a month ago. It has better image quality than the HS20(no noise up to ISO800), but it is no where close to a DSLR, but it's good enough. The video: If you use manual focus during video mode you can avoid the tiking noise. On bright days, outdoors just turn to manual focus and put on infinit if you are not close to anything you want to record. The thing is these cameras are made for versatility and decent but not great image quality.
