I never appreciated it much until it was discontinued, but I've been revisiting a lot of stocks and this one always pleases me now. I like that it has a bit more punch than Portra 400, which I also need to revisit again. Great shots! Too bad they won't just license their film out to someone else or something ...

If I have to pick one I would still choose Portra over Fuji in general.. but if I’m shooting specific scenes with a lot green, I’d definitely go with Fuji. Hope the leftover can keep us going for a little longer..

Thanks for the review, Sam! It was interesting to see it in different lighting conditions and also over-exposed. Regardless of how the film performs, I think your skills in photography, direction, and post-processing make the images come out looking great almost every time!

Pro 400H was a very light hungry film. Best results were achieved by overexposing it by +2 stops and incident light metering. Or +1 stop and mesuring light in the intermediate shadows. Of course it could be exposed at box speed but then it was rather grainy. Surprisingly I made similiar results with the amateur film Superia 200. Once I over exposed it by one EV the shadows had detail and a delicate brown hue visible in the whole image was gone.

Awesome video! I actually really love the colors out of the fujifilm and I generally like a little more grain presence in my photos. I will definitely try it out on 120!

It’s funny how when I shoot digital I’d add grain to make my photo look like film, and now I shoot film I want my photos looks as clean as digital 😂… the color is lovely when get it right, I really wish they would bring it back someday.

@Captured by Sam my friend was selling 1 pro pack of Pro 400H and I snatched it up, but now I'm too scared to shoot it🤣 anyway, I'm excited to see you shoot more! Also, if you want to make the heartbreak sting a bit less, RNI has a really great Pro 400H simulation. It's not 100% but it's pretty decent for digital! And for everyone else reading this, please don't burn me because of the whole digital recommendation 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Haha great video Sam. Not sure where I heard this, haha, pro 400h is a iso 200 film, but fujifilm just label iso 400 so that to compete with Kodak Portra 400😂 as professional film should have more dynamic range so underexposed a stop should not be an issue😅. Sunny + iso 200 is definitely pro 400h’s friend.

Nice shots and awesome video sam ! I only shot one roll of pro400h before, but it didn't turn out as good as I expected. Maybe this is because Iseldom take portrait shots hahaha, and recently I found myself prefer reversal film stocks ( especially velvia 50 ) to color negatives. The gratification you get while watching slide films on a light pad is incredible, you just can't help saying wow hahaha

Hi Sam, by my experienc generaly Fuji film stocks have greenish midtones and shadows. Kodak film stocks are warmer and have orange/red midtones shadows. The Fuji Pro 400H loves overexposure and sunlight. At overcast dull days use B&W film stocks and you will love the photos. Happy shooting and have great lights! Regards from Scotland

I loved both sets actually. The Fuji pro looks a little more natural and I’d say even a bit more flattering to my eyes. It would have been interesting to see how the Fuji pro would have captured the scene indoors where you shot the portra. In either case, both sets were beautiful.

Beautiful portraits anyways, very nice work! I too had a little underwhelming experience with Pr400H and a rainy portrait session, everything greenish and dull skin tones, brrr… Problems with highlights in my case from tuning the scans towards more humanly skin colors. Maybe this film stock enrolls its charmes when going for high key portraits without pushing but heavily overexposing. Underexposing could be more for dystopian urban spaces, I guess… 🤔

Everybody has been telling me this is actually a 200 film, Fuji force naming it 400 to compete with Portra400 😂… so.. we might be wrong to begin with shooting it at 400 ISO~

I've only shot one roll of this, I've still got 4 rolls of 120 left in my fridge. Maybe I just wasn't shooting it right but at box speed I got major colour shifts in the highlights and it got washed out very quickly in contrasty scenes. I'm a little worried about shooting the rest of it because I'm not sure I can trust it to handle any lighting situation like the films I'm used to. I'm shooting some engagement photos for a friend tomorrow so maybe I'll give it one more shot.
@itscapturedbysam
@itscapturedbysam Жыл бұрын
I felt the same way when I first got my scans out.. it seems unstable and less latitude than Portra. Later when I shot it at 200, it dose look a lot better… I noticed the color shift happens more in the under exposed ones, so I’d rather over exposed it to risk loosing some highlight than loosing correct color~

You can try to crop out the outer frame line before converting by Negative lab, it would give you a quite different result! Most of the time, the exposure would be more accurate based on my experience.

The updated Negative lab crop the empty frame automatically before converting, and then undo the crop automatically.. much more efficient!!

I just find the colors of Pro400h so much more natural and true-to-life than Portra. In your Portra 400 examples, when you were showing behind the scenes footage setting up the shots from your digital camera vs the final products from the Portra scans, every shot on Portra had this artificially warm cast and the skin was almost gold. I know that’s some people’s thing, but I often find it’s too strong of a color cast that I need to spend a lot of time editing out in post
@itscapturedbysam
@itscapturedbysam Жыл бұрын
Kodak is definitely warmer than the Fuji pro 400. But the photos in the video are especially warmer due to the cloudy day under exposure I think.. when there are more light, I found the Porta 400 could be pretty neutral, and also leave a lot room for editing. But when there is not enough light, I struggle with color editing no matter what film I use~ 😂

i think Pro 400H is really great. Although I feel that it is probably not a 400asa but instead somewhere imbetween a 200 asa and 350ASA film. It's just a slightly cooler and slightly less sensitive version of Portra 400 and needs to be shot and edited with accordingly.

I find 400H so much nicer than Portra400, but it takes a while to learn. I meter at 160. If you have blown highlights thats likely a scanning issue. It’s really a ~5200K film and if you adjust that to 5500k its just amazing.

Pro tip : shoot it at 100 iso. Best results . 200iso is awesome. 400h is more grainy than Portra 400. Also 400h is not suitable for overcast weather like yours. This film needs LOTS of light . Sunny / slightly cloudy sunny.
