I usually don’t have high hopes for comparison videos on youtube, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one! Detailed without getting too long. Very informative! Well done! The X-H1 looks like it’s an interesting camera. I won’t get it, because I like the compact style of my X-T2, but I could see some of the improvements coming to the X-T3, mainly wifi, bluetooth and touchscreen. I also saw a few things which I think will find it’s way into the X-T2 and X-Pro2 with firmware updates.

HI,Maarten. Thank you for the in-depth review. This is the best review I have watched so far on KZbin since yesterday. I am currently using my X-T2 which I had last year, together with my classic X-Pro1 to back-up with. I am not into shooting videos (actually I haven't used my X-T2 to shoot videos before) so I think I will not upgrade yet my X-T2. But given the specs, X-H1 will be a hit for sure!

Thanks for the comparison Maarten - excellent as always. I was a huge fan of the XT-2 but it had a few bugs that were deal-breakers for me. I'm hoping you might be able to let me know if they exist in the X-H1 as well. Primarily it had to do with the way the camera changed exposure in video. For example, if you had the X-T2 set to auto ISO and filmed in a scene that changed light, the exposure change in video was 'stepped' (I believe it did this with aperture, too). Also when you zoomed in with a zoom lens, the exposure would jump around as you zoomed. I tested this and saw it with the 18-55mm kit lens, the 10-24 f4, and the 50-140 f/2.8 lenses. Were you able to test whether the X-H1 fixed this exposure stepping issue (I'm not sure what to call it, and I haven't really seen many people address it). If so, I may finally drop Sony for good and move over to Fuji, which would make me very happy :). Thanks again!

It is an annoyance, but sometimes the annoyance offsets the value of using AutoISO when there is a dramatic lighting transition in a scene. And while I'm annoyed, and it's clearly obvious to me - most viewers are not sensitive to these kinds of issues.

Excellent review Maarten, one of the best I've seen to date. Personally I sold my X-T2 to get the H1 because it has IBIS. As we get older, IBIS is so much more important. Looking forward to using it with the awesome XF16-55 f2.8 which does not have OSS. Second good reason to upgrade to H1 is the better grip and size. The X-T2 was just a little too small for large hands, the H1 should be just right. Looking forward to your further review of the H1.

Another great video! I can add one confirmation - about the sequential memory card option, that it does have completely seamless transfer from the first card to the second when the first one is full (you did mention this on the video but as a question rather than a statement). I heard confirmation of the seamless nature of the transfer via a comment from 'Fuji Guy Billy' (who I believe is Canada-based).

A format option has not been added to the favorites menu but it can be easily activated without going in the menu by holding down the trash button for a second and then pressing the rear control dial (on X-T2, probably on X-H1 too). I think the flicker reduction option can only be changed when the electronic shutter is enabled because it isn't needed for the mechanical shutter.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Great tip - thanks, but really, why can't that be on my menu? No, in fact the manual clearly states that the flicker reductions works on with the mechanical shutter (and I tried both).

I always enjoy your videos - nice work! As primarily a still shooter I only see one major advantage of this camera over the XT-2: IBIS. Hoping Fuji brings IBIS to the XT-3. Also, the loss of the dedicated exposure compensation dial is reason enough to pass on this body for me; one of the main reasons I shoot Fuji is their dedicated mechanical dials for controlling exposure. All that said, this looks like a great body for those who are serious about video.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thank you. I would not bet on IBIS in an upcoming X-Tn model. As I rarely to never use the exposure compensation dial (it's just to easy to adjust the setting I want on the X-T2) I will not miss it. I think many believe that exposure compensation is a magic fourth exposure setting - it's not. So if I'm not getting the right exposure, I want to choose if it's the shutter speed or the ISO that's being adjusted.

It seems that this camera was designed to compete in the world of video makers. Which is awesome because the new cinema profile can save you so much time getting that cinema look that we all like. But for general stills shooting, I think either the XT2 or XP2 are a better option because of its size/weight and slightly better battery life. I'd like to see that new cinema profile added to the XT2 via firmware, I wonder if they'll ever do that?

I'm not a video guy but for me the most attractive feature is clearly the IBIS. That is a game changer. It makes the 16 to 55 f/2.8 and the 56 and 90 primes instantly more useable. That on it's own is worth the price IMHO. I also heard the eye piece is moveable to allow for left or right eye use and those of use you find that dead center placement involves smashing our noses into the LCD. With touchscreen I could see that being a problem. Did you find that the case?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
There is certainly a benefit to IBIS for stills - in a very quick test, I was able to handhold exposures to .5 second. The IBIS, as provided in this, as in most still/video cameras, provides a very limited advantage to video shooters - you'd already have to be pretty steady. I would still use a gimbal with this camera. The only exception to this in my experience is Olympus (it's admittedly easier with a smaller sensor), where IBIS starts to be usable for video. The eye piece is symmetrical, so not designed for left/right eye specific use. It is not movable - it is removable. The touch screen can be disabled easily - but as the touchpad selection area can be changed, the nose problem is easily avoided.

I think this is a great point. I understand the 16-55 is a great lens, but I hesitate to buy it because I take a lot of indoor images in lower light conditions. Getting a bit older, not as steady. Now with IBIS, that lens becomes much more useful. And all those Primes become stabilized also.

Hi Maarten, Greetings from the Philippines. I will buy my first camera. I will be doing mostly videos with slomo and a little bit of stills. These are my choices. I hope you give your thoughs or even suggest other camera not in the list: Sony A6300: Good slowmo, but it overheats Canon 200D / SL2: because its beginner friendly, lenses for future upgrade... and cheap Canon 800D / T7i: 2nd Canon choice Olympus E-M5ii: 5-Axis IBIS Lumix G85: 5-Axis IBIS Fujifilm X-T20: Because its a Fuji :) I am leaning towards the Olympus M5ii because it has everything I am looking for but the micro 4/3 sensor is making me hold back. I fear this might be terrible in low-light. I might be shooting dimly lit scenes and areas specially during music concerts. I will also be doing product photography for my wife. HELP PLEASE! Hi Maaten. Thank you for the video. My question. Before making the move to my XT-1. I was a cannon user and I liked the AL-servo + back button focus combination. How does the X-H1 AF (AL Servo) + AF-ON experience compare with cannon and its XT-precursors
@MaartenHeilbron

Always my pleasure, thank your the kind words. Yes, you can configure the X-H1 (and X-T2) to use one of the buttons on the upper back panel as AF-On (it's all customizable) for back focus. Depending on the generation of Canon you're using - you'll likely find the Fuji phase detect focus system to be faster - with a good improvement of the X-T2 over the X-T1. And more focus points.

Thanks for your very kind words, appreciated. I haven't done a side by side focus speed comparison - and may not have the tools to do so accurately. Possibly CNet (Lori Grunin's reviews are excellent) or dpreview will provide that detail. I'll also include this detail in my full review. I believe flicker reduction is for video mode 7:43 Shutter speed probably locks at double the frames per second in video mode or it should for the 180 degree shutter rule. The video screen touch options feel like it works like the Sony A6500

That’s not what the manual says. It’s for stills, to match the shutter release to the brightest point in the flicker cycle. Pretty sure it’s disabled in video mode.

Lovely job MH. I don't quite get lending you the camera, then requiring that you return it so Fuji can at a future date send it back. Any software updates can be done online, I think? Rick, FWIW - I am personally not entirely sure the XH1 & A6500 are targeted at the same audience and therefore comparable. I know both use APS-C sensors, keeping in mind that Fuji does not manufacture a full frame camera, this would make XH1 Fuji's flagship X series camera and also targeted at professional users where the A6500 to me seems more of a consumer grade product.

Hi, I enjoy your reviews. My question is: is the canon80d even in the ballpark with this Fuji? I if you're shooting stills using L glass is the canon even comparable or does this Fuji make the canon 80d's photo quality seem like a toy? Thanks.

@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I would prefer the Fuji, but in terms on image quality it's roughly comparable. Fuji's XF red badge lenses would be comparable to Canon's L series, but Canon does have a larger selection of lenses. While the X-H1 is clearly the more robust camera, the 80D is not a toy by any standard.

@dustinjenkins8215
@dustinjenkins8215 6 жыл бұрын
Maarten Heilbron Well, there's some of the autofocusing problems that others have been having. However, more detrimental to me is the various freezes that occur. Specifically if I change the power settings right after turning on the camera. Also, video stops recording when a battery dies (with the grip, of course) and Im having inconsistent results with my settings sticking in movie mode vs S mode. As well as audio being heavily distorted through the headphone jack. Quite a few problems actually.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Oh dear .. still working with the autofocus myself, at the moment it feels the negatives are somewhat exaggerated, but. I'll check the freezing you mention, but hasn't happened to me yet (mainly shooting video). Settings seem to stick for me - but I'll keep an eye out for that. The dead battery in the grip stops video recording has been a problem for Fuji since the X-T2's grip - I do wish they'd fix that. The only workaround I have is to plug the grip in, it's OK when it's wall powered. That said, don't have the grip yet to check the headphone jack. Thanks for your helpful and detailed notes.

thanks for your video! I've seen many reviews but it is not clear to me yet how the "hybrid" usage will be. Meaning if I'm shooting pictures and i suddenly want to record video, i have to turn the drive mode to video right? there's no direct access to video recording? will the video functionality remember aperture and speed, regardless of what I was using in pictures? If I'm in video mode can I take pictures? so how the video/picture switching process works... thanks again!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting point - yes, you do have to move the drive dial to video mode - but then it picks up all of the video-specific settings set on the video menu. That's a feature I find quite helpful. However, it still requires (as it does with other cameras) an adjustment to the shutter speed (at least) if not also the ISO and aperture - optimal stills settings are never optimal video settings. I'll detail this in my full review.

If you combine the self timer with burst mode it will take five images instead of just one. No opportunity to change the times.
@barfussfoto
@barfussfoto 6 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, misunderstood the sentence in the video, sorry. So: Isn't this quite normal instead of easter egg? E.g. on my D500 or D850: if I set the camera to bracketing, choose 3, 5, 7, whatever as bracket count, set to self-timer, it will take automatically all images set for bracketing. On electronic shutter (only on the D850, not available on D500) - Nikon calls it "Silent Shutter" - this enables you to shoot vibration free bracketed images without the need of a remote release.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Most cameras have this as an explicit setting - on the Fuji it magically happens when you combine the two. Bracket and client shutter (both of which are supported on the X-H1) are different features. On the Nikon these features are set with custom c3 settings, there is no similar feature on the X-H1.

Shame they have not put a decent battery in there with the extra space. At least provided a decent capacity optional big one for the grip. There is enough space in there to fit a battery the size of the Nikon D3s on my desk and I have got over 2000 shots per charge from that battery. If the grip had an optional 'High Power' battery instead of just adding two more of the small feeble ones, they could have made this an all-day shooter.
