Fuji X-H1: Even Better than the X-T2, But...

...the market is moving VERY quickly. When I say I am fried -- well, I am.
I forgot to thank Adorama for lending me the gear -- and being incredibly patient at that. DOH! Thanks, guys.
The X-H1 is an incredibly appealing camera that will make a compelling case to many that neither full frame nor micro four thirds are the ideal format: APS-C is. And yet with all of the cameras coming out now -- and remember, the X-H1 is less than a year old -- it has been eclipsed in some ways even my its new baby brother the X-T3.
I remembered to make that point.
But I forgot to mention the Pez-sized batteries (a minor pain while in production) and the fact that the X-H1 breaks up recording into 3.5 gigabyte chunks (a major pain in post).
And I really need to take a closer look at the AF technology.

I do weddings and use a GFX for portraits and key moments. I couple this with an XH-1and because they look the same - no-one knows but me and my assistant - seriously for the reportage stuff the XH-1 aces the GFX because it is faster in everything - terrible lag with the GFX but the two together integrate seamlessly!

An interesting review, as a Fuji xt1 and x70 owner i use old vintage lenses on my xt1 .. I'm tempted to get the Xh1 as a vintage test bed for my old lenses. The Xt1 is a lovely camera and capable perhaps a lot more that it's user. However IBIS would be great for all the m42 lenses I use.. Thank you for your review. Quality with a touch of character.

With the price drop of the X-H1 WITH grip to $1299 makes it a great choice. The silence of the shutter in mechanical mode is alone worth the price.

Another excellent and well-thought through video, Hugh. While I realize that your particular requirements are more video-centric than mine, I've been shooting with my X-H1 all weekend long for the last race of my motor racing season. With its "older" sensor and image processor, it doesn't have the newest, latest and greatest AF system of the newer X-T3. But, let's be honest, the very latest AF systems from Sony & Fujifilm are now differentiating themselves only at the _very extremes_ of performance. And, the AF system of the X-H1 is more good enough for what I do, & I push AF systems pretty damn hard, as you well know. What I _am_ consistently blown away by though, is the out-and-out of the image quality from the X-H1 for stills photography. Even though it has the same sensor/processor of the X-T2, this camera clearly outperforms the X-T2 for absolute image quality using the same lenses. I attribute this to the X-H1 being manufactured to incredibly tight optical tolerances so it is capable of extracting the maximum optical performance from any of the fine range of Fujinon lenses, but most importantly for the just released 200mm f/2 and MK cine lenses that it was specifically designed for. Wrapping up, I am 100% agreement with you that by combining the sensor and image processor of the X-T3 with the IBIS, body, controls, robustness, _and_ optical tolerances of the X-H1, the "X-H2" can be predicted to be a *spectacular* camera. My best regards, Stephen
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
Stephen, your auto racing photographs taken with the your Fuji’s give up nothing to full frame. You are one of the people who motivated me to look at the X-H1 in the first place (but you knew this). 😉 just got the X-T3 in hand and will explore it more deeply while we’re in Europe. My single biggest question is the AF technology for video: it appears to me that every Fuji lens I’ve tested thus far that blows me away is using linear motors. This is not an issue for stills (your images and skill prove the point), but it is an issue for video. I’ll have to look more closely into this! Thoughts?
@stephenscharf6293
@stephenscharf6293 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hugh, unfortunately, I can't really speak to the AF performance for video. I personally am of the view that the X-H1 was specifically designed for use with the manual focus MK Cine lenses, but from what I've seen with the X-T3, it looks like its AF performance for video will be better than the X-H1 with linear motor lenses. I really look forward to your X-T3 experiences! Meanwhile, I've got a race to shoot today! Best, Stephen

Agreed! If you are a sports or wildlife photographer I can understand the need for - say - X-T3's 30 frames a second BURST, but for most users, the improvements in the X-T3 will be invisible. Same can be said for video, who really needs 10-bit? That being said it's always great to see Fuji innovate, so it's definitely a good thing, but my point is that most improvements in the X-T3 won't make a difference to the average user, thus, as you well put it, the X-T2 and X-H1 older generation is quite good enough already.

Great video. I always liked the look of this camera, but like the EOS R it felt just a year too late. Between the GH5s, the A7iii, the X-T3 and the Z6/7, video capability at the prosumer end has grown significantly. That said, both these marginalised cameras still look incredible, and would have been era defining if announced earlier than they were.

The XH1 according to your observations and others seem to be a great camera. However, is it worth it for a still shooter to switch from a whole system to it? Or maybe worth it as a complimentary item to a lineup. My inputs!!!
@MichaelLaing71
@MichaelLaing71 5 жыл бұрын
I have had the X-H1 since the end of February and I think it is the best decision and also the most frustrating decision I have made in years. Upon release, it was massively flawed, the AF was unreliable, the camera froze and generally it was a bit of a pain. With the 1.10 firmware upgrade the X-H1 finally became the camera it should have been in the first place. For photography, it is excellent, though the AF can be a little fiddly at times and you need to know it well to get the best out of the system because it can be a little quirky. The picture quality is great (as is pretty much every camera now days) both in Jpeg and Raw. When it comes to video, I am still working things out and have had some issues. 90% of the time I am using a Atomos Shogun to record to (which cost about £700, with add ons), It is just much more practical to shoot to, than shooting internally, where you have so many single clips, as they use fat 32 instead of exfat when recording video. Also the 7" screen is a huge advantage. Of course the pain with the X-H1 recording externally is the micro hdmi cable which has already broken the port once and has caused the camera to be sent in for repair. There are a couple of other things which I find a bit of a pain. I hate the placement of the Q button and I am forever accidently pressing the button, particularly when shooting video for some reason. The AF button, I do find again is too easily accidentally changed, which can be frustrating and I do find the joystick, just to be in slightly the wrong position for my fingers (though others may love it). As I said at the beginning though I do love the camera, particularly as I get more experienced with it but the frustration is that it is 7 months old and already feels out of date compared to the X-T3, particularly with the AF, which does seem to be on another level. At the moment I am weighing up my options I am seriously thinking of going fully over to Fujifilm, from Nikon (the X-H1 blows away my D800 (which is should do)) and I love the slightly smaller form factor of the X-H1 over the D850, when you include lenses. The option is to get an X-T3 to go with my X-H1 but I am more likely to wait unto the X-H2, which won't be released for at least a year. The biggest frustration is that Fujifilm didn't wait and release the X-H1 with the insides of the X-T3, as it would have pretty much killed every other mirrorless camera on the market but Fuji didn't and whilst the X-H1 is a very good camera and class leading in some areas, it doesn't quite stand out as much as the X-T3 does. The last thing I will mention is the lenses. Fujifilm have optically the best lenses generally on the market for APS-C and some could say mirrorless and their newer lenses are astounding but some of their older lenses do need an AF motor upgrade. The 35mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4 just feel slightly slow against the 35mm f/2 and the 90mm f/2 (I love the 90mm f/2 and would recommend it over the 56mm f/1.2, even though it isn't as practical). So overall, I am happy with the way Fujfilm are going. It feels like Fujifilm do listen to their customers (which is the opposite of Nikon) and I do have to give a shout out to the Fujifilm reps in the UK who are great, particularly Carl who is awesome.

Michael Laing Michael, thank you for sharing such a detailed, extended real world review of the system! As I’ve marveled a number of times, what an extraordinary community we have here. Seems like Fuji has taken on board Sony’s rapid, iterative approach to cameras. There is a value, as another viewer pointed out, of foregoing an initial release of anything. One generation away from greatness? Having to use an external recording monitor would be a deal breaker for me.please continue to keep me posted on your X-H1 adventures!

I did my first video shoot for probably 8 years, just over a month ago, with the camera and generally the quality was good. I was manually focusing and I have to admit, I was very rusty with the shoot, which is why there are a lot of shots particularly at the end which I am not a fan of. I also have to say the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 is an extraordinary lens for video, like this. It is easily the best kit lens ever made and optically works great wide open. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGbPl5qpbreGn7M

The "record limit" is only because the EU wanted to protect video recording industry back in 2006. If a digital stills camera could record video, then they wanted to re-classify them as camcorders, and thus be taxed at a higher rate. The solution was to not record video longer than 30 minutes in one single press of the shutter button. (Yes, you can hack that with firmware, or 3rd party software) You beef should be with the EU, not Fujifilm or other camera makers. Yay, bureaucracy! www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/latest/photo-news/eu-speaks-out-over-camera-import-tax-threat-28462

Nice review, hope the storm doesn't cause too much damage to your neighborhood. I am a BIG fan of high-end APS-C cameras. I would love in the future to be able to choose from a stream of better and better cameras from hotly-competing companies. It is nice that Fuji is continuing to compete against Panasonic and Leica in the APS-C market. The big companies like Nikon, Sony, and Canon are going hot and heavy in the competition for the full-frame market. Hmm, wait, am I missing some other APS-C competitor? Maybe begins with S? Well, I do have an A6300 somewhere on my shelf, but, umm, you know what that was like. True, they got so many complaints that they added IBIS and several other improvements to release the A6500 two years ago. But, why bother to upgrade? After all, it isn't like having an old model would bias me in any way when evaluating the latest releases of competitors. I'm glad that you at least mentioned a possible new APS-C release in the near future from Sony. Perhaps then we can compare competing offerings again. It is getting hard to navigate the APS-C market space with an invisible 800 pound gorilla moving around in the room. Disclaimer: some irony was used in the construction of this comment.

I was a R&R bass player. I owned mostly American Fenders. When MusicMan came out with a 5-string I bought it. Why? It was beautiful and also a good player. My first serious camera was an Olympus OM-1. Why did I buy it? It was beautiful. Also a great camera I learned later with still the best light metering system to this day. Sensing a pattern? I bought into Fuji cameras. Why? The smart ones out there already now. They are beautiful. They also have all the features I was looking for...which again I discovered to my great pleasure...after the fact. I’m not original in saying that the aesthetics of gear one uses is important. I like wearing my silver T3. I also drive a certain car. Why? Not going through that again but you get it. I feel more like a better photographer with Fuji. Am I? Don’t be quick to answer that one, superficial as it may sound.

Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions - okay Hugh, watched both and I think the IBIS is far more valuable to me with my non IS 56mm and 16-55 than the possible AF improvement and possible improved ISO (although I’ve read in places some think that XT3 noise is worse than the XH1/XT2). I don’t do video so those improved XT3 video features are not important. I’m struck by your comment about when the shutter speed is low enough and action slow enough that ‘ibis trumps lens and sensor IQ every time’. Time I think to unpack my XH1, put my strap lugs back on and watch some none camera gear videos; Cheers Hugh for your therapy and sense, Steve.

Can't decide between XH-1 and XT-3. Looking to switch to Fuji from Canon 5D mkiv for weddings, mostly for silent shooting, lighter/smaller body + lenses, EVF, etc. I love the grip of the XH-1 and its unbelievably quiet mechanical shutter, but I can't help being tempted by the XT-3 due to its price, newer sensor and processor, plus I have use for its 4K 60fps and its 10bit codec... then again the XH-1's IBIS... Gah, you can see how the struggle is real. Thoughts anyone?

From my modest experiences with, I clearly appreciate its caracter, sometimes easy to use, sometimes difficult to understand its differentiates from the others but more than all these, I am seduced always its outstanding film simulation picture results because, may be, I am still to my dismay an old analog photographer who pretends to be "digitalized" ...

Your fried? I feel fried from making a choice of which camera system I want to invest into. I enjoy my little Olympus EM10 II and I love the feel of the dials. The Olympus EM-1 seems to be pretty awesome, EM-5 is a bit dated and only has contrast detection. I think all three are well thought out with the design. Other then a lack of IBIS in the XT-2 and XT-20, I feel in many ways, Fujifilm has more to offer for the price. Even the XT-3 is very aggressive for the price. I can save $400 if I get the Olympus EM-1 with the 12-40mm f2.8 at $2000 but I can also get the Fujifilm XT-2 with the 16-55 f2.8 for only $100 more! I'm going to have to watch this video again. Thank you for your review, nice & deep insights. I think the X-H1 can be seen as a "first gen"-Camera from Fuji with its abilities, especially the Ibis, the build quality and its overall performance. I guess the 2nd Gen will really be something even greater and i hope that Fuji will then install a new battery system that brings at least double the power output. And of course 1 or 2 another new gimmicks, but not entirely necessary. From my point of view, Fuji is on the right way and i'm looking forward for the X-T3 being my first Fuji soon (coming from m4/3 ... haha).

Tanks again for a very good walkthrough of the XH-1 versus the new Canon R and Nikon Z systems. As I pointed out in a previous comment, I have the XT-3 in sight, but I do also think we will see a lot of the XT-3 specs into a new XH-2! The problem is, when will we see a new XH-2!?! There's a music club in my hometown, Bergen, where I'd love to record the performance of the local band playing regularly there. I'm looking for gear to do this job but I haven't settled of what to purchase. I'm inclined to buy Fujifilm, not Panasonic, but but but ... Any thoughts about this, anyone? By the way, they play blues, artists like Niel Young and Joni Mitchell among others and the best of it all, artists visiting Bergen pop in to sing with them! Even American artists have done so, so I thought it could be worth a project. Cheers William

So, I'm a photo shooter, but it's the absence of any videographer making a program from the music club that set me on this idea. If nobody will grab the opportunity, why not me!?! So, I'll have to get some new gear for this, I think.

16-55/2.8 is a great lens, but not image stabilized. You definitely want at least an X-H1 with IBIS if you intend to use this for video. An X-H2 seems the obvious choice worth waiting for. If you cannot wait, I'd say the Sony a7 III with superior AF is a better near-term choice for optimal performance, but that also means investing in native mount Sony glass. I'd suggest renting to see how you feel.

I use the Canon 24 EF adapted to my X-T2 and could not be happier. The 24 EF is a native 2.8 but with the adapter, goes to F2. The lens is sharp.. Period. I bough the lens for 129.99 (CDN) and the Viltrox adapter for $233.00 (CDN) from Amazon and have full auto focus functionality. The Fuji 23mm F2 is $599 (CDN) and the Canon and adapter cost me $363 (CDN) + tax so about $380 (CDN) all total. The Canon lens focuses closer that the Fuji so can be used for pseudo macro and is sharper from F2 to F4. No brainier as far as I am concerned. I will be buying the X-H1 for the IBIS as I shoot more primes than stabilized zooms. Looking forward to mounting my vintage primes on the X-H1.

I have been shooting Fuji as a low level amateur for 4 years now. And I love both the shooting experience and the quality of the result. I have only been bothered by the AF of the 35mm F/1.4. Unfortunately it's also one of the best looking primes. Now, in 2019, with almost two kids, I want to shoot handheld videos and be as happy with the videos as with my stills. I can purchase a discounted X-H1 and have fun with all my XF lenses. But I just don't want to semi-upgrade from my X-T2 and miss the cool new features of the X-T3. The latter doesn't have IBIS. So I can kiss all my beloved lenses goodbye for handheld videos of my family. Fuji is apparently not going to update the X-H1. So, I am switching to Sony or Nikon. And I am sad, because I love the Fuji ergonomics. By testing the A7 III in a local shop, I knew I would at least partially regret my move. Come on Fuji, you had to give me a X-H2.

I’ve owned just about all the serious Fuji bodies. My current arsenal is a t20, t2 and h1. The H1 is perfectly sized and weighted for 2nd gen fuji lenses such as the 23mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2 which seem a bit large for my T2. With the 56mm it’s a monster. Street photography during the day is almost out because it tends to make people run away. The T2 with a 23mm or 35mm f2 is a better choice under good natural light, but the H1 with a fast lens at night is the only way to go if one wishes to keep the ISO down and get great sharp images. The shutter and shutter release are probably the best in the world.

It’s been 4 months since you made this and a lot has happened... Fuji is a GREAT camera line and the firmware support if revolutionary. But... I’ve had lots of Fuji X series cameras. Presently an X100F, H1, T2 and T3 with 8 primes. So, I’m into it. I’ve earned the right to kvetch. When the X-H1 came out I was right there waiting for the local cameral emporium’s doors to open. $1800? Yeah but it had 5 axis in body stabilization, a soft shutter release and a shutter mechanism almost as quiet as a leaf. A little too much like a Panzer tank, but they had to, right? I’m not complaining about any of this. What I don’t understand is what they did with the pricing. A short time after I scraped up the $1800 they offered a $200 rebate. Okay, this is temporary. Then a price drop. One can now buy one at the permanent price of $1299 WITH the battery grip and 2 extra batteries. I feel a bit abused having been used as a means of market price discovery. They rushed it out in a strategic camera war play , pure simple but in so doing screwed people like me in terms of resale or trade-in value when the next model comes out. This was bad for me, but I think for Fuji, bad for the brand. Leica is Leica because over the years they had made a point of protecting the brand. First and foremost because of an almost neurotic attention to quality perhaps only Germans are stll capable of. People will go out and buy 20 year old technology for 4 times the price because...well...it’s a Leica; and one can be confident the resale value will support the insanity of buying it in the first place. Every see a Leica go on sale? Don’t hold your breath. I understand that Fuji did with the X-H1. They had to force an IBIS model onto the market, and perhaps before they were ready. I know some shop owners and they are not 100% in on Fuji, i.e., they seldom will carry the entire line, or flashes, or other paraphernalia they do with Nikon and Canon. I was told by one, “great camera but I’m here to make money.” Of course. Fuji dropped the price dramatically on the X-H1 so their perhaps wavering retailers could unload their inventory. I get that, but they did it at my expense. Marketing is psychological. News? What they did here was make people like me gun-shy from ever getting the latest and greatest when it hits the shelves; and they advanced the idea that their cameras, X-H1 specifically, carry an overblown markup and are only actually worth about 2/3’s. Now, we know this may not be the case, but this is the message they sent and took some of the wow out of owning my X-H1. That’s right, I’m even subject to the psychological thing. Their sell out on the X-H1 looked like a panic move. Stock went up, but stock brokers are not, for the most part, photographers and gadget-gizmo lovers. There’s a saying in marketing: “If a product is not selling, RAISE the price.” I think it will take some time before Fuji regains the trust of loyal owners like me after the X-H1 debacle. To protect the consumer and the retailers Fuji should have offered to buy back remaining stock that didn’t sell to hold the line on the brand name. I think this will hurt them in the long run, but let’s see. I’m into second chances and to get the ergonomics and film sims I really have no where else to go. I could sell the house and and buy a Leica, but I still have some priorities. But I will be waiting a good 6 months next time Fuji puts out a new model to do a little of my own price discovery.

I've watched a number of your videos and you are quite informative as well as entertaining, however, I disagree with you on this review X-H1. Maybe some of my issue(s) is that I have yet to master all of the controls but in low light, I'm not digging this camera. I'm really trying to love it but owning both an A7RII and EOS-R, the images I get out of the X-H1 in low light pale in comparison to my other two cameras. A number of the low light images ARE grainy in comparison to my full frame cameras. The 56mm f1.2 when compared to my Rokinon SP 85mm F1.2 are not as good....and it's hard to say why they aren't but there's just this "THING" missing about the images in comparison. Might I say it lacks micro-contrast? i don't know. The camera and its lenses are FAR lighter weight and carrying it around Chicago and surrounding areas make it a joy to use from a weight perspective but thats about it for me. The autofocus also leaves a bit to be desired.
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
I defer to your judgement for your use! Very surprised, however, to see you prefer the Rok to the Sigma. Perhaps a bad copy? As for low light: are you comparing the cameras at the same aperture or at the same depth of field? I'm guessing aperture - because much (if not all) of the full frame sensor's advantage disappears when you equalize for depth of field. What do you think? As for AF: nothing beats the latest Sony these days, but I'm a bit surprised that the a7r II is that much better than the X-H1. How/what are you shooting? No surprise when it comes the R - dual pixel is better than the X-H1 (not necessarily true of the system in the X-T3)..

An IBIS system buzzer appeared on an X-h1 with less than 100 shots and 3 weeks of use, it drains the battery prematurely and this noise enters the video recordings, this is the store's response: Roberto, today I personally attended the test of your camera to Fuji's authorized technical service regarding the alleged anomaly that you declare. The test was to open a new X-H1, install the batteries, remove the lid of the body and make a noise test. There was no difference between his team that is under review and the new camera. Therefore, it is concluded that the equipment does not have any operation problem or factory failure. Faced with this we can not accept your request for change on the grounds that the equipment has some malfunction, there are no valid technical arguments, nor do I see any ethical problem in the sale of the product enhanced on 10/09/18 or in the period between that you gave the camera reporting the alleged failure. Notwithstanding the above, please ask the Technical Service for more specific information that indicates that the sound you indicate is an anomaly, is a functional part of the product due to the hardware's own conditions, they indicated that they will look for that background "and in the As long as there are "they will send them to me to make them arrive to you. But I repeat it without falling into the crap that for the manufacturer is a normal condition.

I own the Sony A7II, A7RII, A7SII, Canon EOS-R, and barely two months ago purchased the Fuji X-H1. I've never owned native Sony glass due to buying the A7II at a time when choices were limited AND expensive, granted they're still expensive, I purchased used Canon lenses along with Metabones and Sigma adapters. Of course the autofocus was less than desirable but as a dadographer and occasional paid shooter I found it tolerable. When I got the EOS-R and saw how well the autofocus was with the lenses I had, the only Sony camera to see regular action was the A7RII. Then came the XH-1 and now.... All the Sony bodies are getting sold. I'm keeping the EOS-R because I have three Zeiss lenses (two Otus and one Milvus) that I refuse to part with. The IBIS on the Fuji is REALLY forgiving. I have used it for some handheld long exposure cityscapes and was blown away at how much better IBIS worked on the Fuji than the Sony's. I'm done buying cameras for a while.

I totally love the quality of Fuji cameras but couldnt love them. I like ultra modern and avoid retro. I identified APS as the perfect sensor size 5 years ago and bought a Nikon D7100. Alas the image quality wasnt good enough and was blown away a year later by my APS Leica X113. I tried continuing with just a Fx D700 but the Leica nailed Nikon's coffin lid down. APS lenses are not too big which makes a huge difference; certainly to me especially on a nature trek. APS really is the first format designed for general performance and although it failed with film it was like a duck to water with digital. Clearly 35mm was chosen for convenience, and no other reason, a century ago as there was plentiful film stock available to use; it has no other advantage except for film requireing less enlargement. The exception is Leica M cameras who have a historical need to maintain continuity with their film equipment. Clearly full frame is living on borrowed time; the industry is starting to polarise into crop sensor and medium format. I am sure Sony will bring out a MF camera soon and professionals will jump on it. Fuji is way ahead here having identified this trend early on. Well their history is MF, I myself own a Fuji GW690III 6x9. So for quality I use my APS Leica TL2 and X113 while for shear usability especially with long lenses I use my MFT GX9. I cant see me ever returning to full frame except for film; I still love my FM2n. Have a good trip ;-)
