Wow I’m shocked the 23mm 1.4 looked incredible for AF. When it was tracking your face it looked even just as smooth maybe even more so than the 16-55. Awesome stuff man🙏🏻

The new 23mm with the linear motor (LM) works great - the motor is very quiet and AF is nicely responsive. Totally appreciate this video - particularly the info on the Sigma lenses. Thanks!

Great tests Evan! This was helpful to see. In my experience, setting your focus area box from the default size to a smaller size has helped it latch on a bit better for me but I agree with a lot of what you said here about how to get the most out of the AF! Thanks for making this video :)

Great info. I watched this hoping it would apply to my X-S20, which it absolutely does! Love that little camera but going through some recent nighttime urban landscape-type footage with my Fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4 I noticed some considerable focus breathing in spots. Looking forward to applying some of your suggested settings, then playing with it to see if it alleviates the issue🙏🏼

The sigma 24-70’s focus breathing is rough for autofocus. I feel like for me that’s a deal breaker for any kind of video autofocus functionality. It’s one thing for the background to go in and out of focus as it tracks you, but it looks terrible to have the frame shrink and grow as well while it tracks. Thanks for putting this video together! It was very helpful. It kills me that you have similar to Sonys touch subject tracking in Fujis photo mode but not in any video modes.

Hi Evan, just wondering if you've had the chance to test the Metabones EF-FX T CINE speed booster ULTRA 0.71x? I don't know if the AF also has issues with it like the Viltrox, but I'm also interested knowing how the glass in the Metabones speed booster impacts the quality of a lens put in front of it before it hits the sensor. Any intel on that?

I haven't had the chance to test that one, so I can't give much advice, sorry!

Hey man amazing video thank you. I’m using the 23mm MK2 and having a horrible time getting the AF-C settings dialed in. I try to use slow tracking and locked on settings. Is there a way to snap focus using a back button? Any suggestions on this would be helpful, I’m lost! Thanks!

You should be able to assign a custom function to one of the buttons. I haven’t done that before for this specific case.

Great review of these lenses! I've also heard the Sigma 18-35 is very noisy but that's because it's a 10 year old photo-centric lens. Wasn't designed for video. I kinda wish they would refreshed that lens. Question! If you're using manual focus with the Sigma, is the focusing mechanism smooth for focus pulling? And I kinda agree most Fuji lenses are horrible with manual focus because they are focus by wire. If the Fuji 16-55 was an f2.0 then it would a no brainer but it's not.
@EvanSchneider Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's not really possible for a lens to be "noisy", as that's all up to the sensor and exposure settings you're using. I would actually argue the opposite for this lens, it's sharp and clean and the f1.8 aperture allows you to attain very low-noise video. But I agree the lens could use a refresh and I'd love it if it was a bit smaller and shorter. For manual focus on this lens, yes, it is very smooth. Not electronic at all, very tactile. I've shot tons of video in manual focus mode on this lens and it's one of my all time favorites.

Thanks for the in-depth testing. I‘ve tested multiple lenses on the X-H2s myself and basically got the same results. The 16-55 is by far the best lens if you want to rely on AF in video and then it is actually close to perfect. The 18-55 is also very good for video. Are you planning on testing additional prime lenses like the 33 mm 1.4 or the 18 mm 1.4? From what I‘m hearing these seem to be pretty good as well.
@EvanSchneider2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Cool to hear you had similar results. I don’t own those lenses so this is probably the only test I’ll do, but I’ve seen others test a bunch of lenses.

Did You exeperienced some kind of background shifting on 16-55 f 2.8 ? I got X-H2S and 16-55 f 2.8 and many times i got that situation.For example when i am entering the scene AF catches my moving body and i am in focus but simultaniously background jumps from focus/no focus state and destroying my shot.My settings i guess was -2 +4. Weird because with the same settings and my previous camera (X-T4) that sort of issue wasn't appear
@EvanSchneider2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe that’s a result of the camera overshooting the focus a bit and then dialing it back. If you set it to a slower speed it might help, or avoid situations where it’s doing a long focus pull. But most of the time it was able to hit it spot on for me.

Great work testing it out with different settings and lenses in a real world setting. The Fuji AF is certainly it's best yet, but still trails Sony/Canon as you mention at the end. For professional work, I wouldn't trust it, but for personal use it's more than good enough. What camera/lens was the intro filmed with? That looked great and performed the best out of all of them to my eyes.
