Made a Great-Lakes-Trip for 3 weeks with this Sigma on an a6400 & a GRIII. As a tourist I used the setup with the Sigma about 90 % of the time and if you know the focal length of the GR the Sigma is perfect with it's 18mm on the low end. Only downside of the Sigma is the heavy distortion when shooting raw.

This is one of the best lenses ever made in the history of lens design because it's almost an unfair trade. It has many positives without the typical tradeoffs you get from the small size. The biggest trade was distortion, which isn't an uncorrectable problem. This lens makes the case for the APS-C sensor size, demonstrating its most optimal outcome. But now I want more. All I want is a Pro version of this lens that's Parfocal and with weather sealing.

maybe it's placebo but the Sigma is noticeably sharper in the center and at 18 the auto focus hunted significantly less than the fuji in the real world video tests you did. I may consider switching to this lens over my 18-55 seeing as the constant 2.8 is useful for video and the size is a slight bit smaller.... Super video Samuel.

I use for travel and street, where it includes all the focal lengths I like (18mm, 23mm, 35mm, 50mm i.e. great alternative to the f2 Fujicrons). Big boost over the kit lens by having f2.8 at 50mm, which makes it a decent portrait option too (my beloved Sigma 56 f1.4 has been gathering dust). I am using this zoom 80-90% of the time, then occasionally a wide pancake or the 56.

I cannot be more suprised - I didn't need week, not day, not one hour. After few shoots I can tell you that Sigma for Fujifilm is much more SHARPER, of course it has BETTER BOKEH (I cant compare with fujinon 23 f1.4, but this one has old SLOOOWER AF speed). In this case, if the quality is on par (and it seems so from what you said at the end of the video) considering that the fuji lens is a brick , it is a no brainer. this sigma is the zoom lens to buy if you do not already have the 16-55.

Cool review! I really like this lens, I usually use prime lenses but I need a zoom for concert photography (changing lenses during concert is not a good idea I think especially in small clubs/bars) and some video work too, since I find f1.4 to be too shallow for practical use. The problem with Tamron is that while it has more reach and OIS, in practice 50mm vs 70mm is not a huge difference and I saw a numerous videos reporting that OIS on Tamron is seriously buggy when using is on cameras with IBIS, both Fuji and Sony cameras have these issues. So for me this Sigma lens seems like a no brainer.

Hi Samuel! I own an XT4 and almost exclusively lenses with aperture ring. But I will help a friend to get started with her new Xs10 soon (without having had one in my hands yet), and wonder how exactly do YOU change aperture of the Sigma 18-50. I am leaning towards recommending her that lens as a starter - her body will come without any lens! I already checked the XS10 manual online but apparently and very unfortunately you can't program the left Fn Function Dial for that, right? Wouldn't that have been great?? And where do you have SS and Exposure Compensation. ISO stays on the ISO button? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP! I suspect the best way for my friend as a beginner, would be to program her 3 practical Auto ISO adjustments and then activate APERTURE on either the FRONT or the REAR COMMEND DIAL? I heard those aren't even clickable but you can put APERTURE on one of them? ->>> Oh, just found it: you have to put the camera in Mode A (APERTURE PRIORITY AE) or M(MANUAL) so that the front command dial operates APERTURE. GREAT VIDEO btw!

Curious what you thought comparing the Sigma to the Ricoh GR III? Hard to tell the sharpness difference from the video, but it looks like it has far less vignetting than the GR III.
@SamuelStreetlife2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if the Sigma Lens had a correction profile turned on in camera. That could be the reason why it doesn't vignette much. But overall I think the Sigma is really good at 18mm and only suffers a bit in the corners. The GR III was also not perfect in the corners wide open but corners get sharp quickly after F4 and higher. The Sigma never really was super sharp in the corner even stopped down. If you only shoot 18mm (28mm FF) than I would look for a prime lens. Or shoot wide open with the Sigma if your subject is mostly in the center. But overall the Sigma is solid.

very nice comparison between the fuji lens and sigma lens. thanks for reminding me about the other alternative prime lens - 16mm f1.4 seems nice when fuji version is the older step motor thats a little slower than their modern ones right? though for vlogging, do you hold the camera out to film yourself at 18mm? Hey David, sorry for this late response. I would not say the sigma 18-50mm replaces the fujicrons in terms of image quality. But you can absolutely get similar images and only hardcore photographers will be able to tell a difference. It is a question of convenience and how much you value a zoom. And don't forget that all fujicrons can open up to F2! A big benefit over the 18-50mm.

Very good video - is making me think about changing my 18-55 for it. Only downside for me is the loss of focus while zooming - the 18-55 is almost par focal for video. The attraction is the fact it does not have OIS actually as I find if I pan with my 18-55 the OIS fights with IBIS and the footage becomes quite juddery. Do you see that in the Sigma?
@sebastianh.84052 жыл бұрын

I think the Fujinon Kit lens would be more useful on the X-E4 than the Sigma. The X-E4 already has so few buttons so having the aperture dial on the Fujinon lens is a big help. And the IS will be helpful when your shoot 18mm 2.8 in dark environments. Unless you need 2.8 with 50mm a lot I would use the Kit lens with the X-E4.

Hi Samuel, thanks for your content on this lens. Can you answer the question: have you, by the chance, forgotten to turn off the OIS on the XF 18-55 f2.8-4 during the brick wall test? Not that I am a pixel piper but when I review your results on my EIZO 27' 1440, there's a clear win from the Sigma over the Fuji. In fact, the IQ at pretty much every focal lenght looks mushy. If OIS/IBIS was turned off, then Sigma is the clear winner here. Thanks if you reply. Have a great day.

@hellni792 жыл бұрын
I had the beautiful 16-55 for about a year. great IQ but too heavy... paid for a bit less than 700 and sold for the same price, another good thing about quality lenses. Now I'm looking for an alternative after a short disappointing try with the 16--80 f4. i share my thinking:I'm looking both at the 18-55 kit and the sigma. I really don't like the f4 at 55, but it gives aperture ring and OIS, if needed (I'm on x-t4 so not needed). A used 18-55 is basically half the price of the sigma new, and it will take a while since an used one will be on second hand market. 250-300€ vs 500€ the sigma, with no weather resistance, no aperture ring and probably a more plasticky built. But god it's fixed 2.8, that make all the ranges interesting to 50mm, i remember I loved the 16-55 at 55 2.8, while the 16-80 sucked at f4 50mm upwards. The Fuji 16-55 2.8 has better solid built, weather resistance, aperture ring, it's also good looking aha. But it's goddam heavy to carry around for photography, but the higher price is absolutely justified over the sigma. In my case I'm probably going to wait for a second hand sigma, and hope to find a way to try one asap.
@hellni792 жыл бұрын
p.s. I'm as my only lens at the moment is the 35 1.4 I'm also thinking to the get a 16 1.4 fuji(500-600 second hand) or the 16 1.4 sigma(300-350 i guess second hand) and fuji 23 f2 (300 s.h.), bypassing the convenience of the zoom but gaining in quality.

Hi man, what do you use when making a video (post vid production or some gimble ) ? The lens has no OIS and still your video is not shaky :) thanks

I find the advantage of a fast lens on the wide end is a lot more pronounced than at the tele end. 18mm at f4 looks significantly worse but at 50mm, it becomes more marginal. It’s a close call. Loss of focus while zooming and lack of OIS though… hmmmm

He looks like a friend of his, you may have seen him in the "New Fujifilm Lenses from SIGMA" video.
