I have the square hood but now I’ve been preferring the camera without any hood. It is a lot more packable that way. The beauty of the lens is the pancake lens design, but I am keeping the hood for when I feel I need more protection.

The purpose of the hood is to negate/ block the sun or other lights, making the picture look more “crisp”, although depending on the weather or lighting i would removed my hood from time to time.

Which polarizing filter do you use with the YC ONION? I found that my Squarehood Model V won't fit my polarizing and diffusion filters... Time to switch if ever. Appreciate your answer. 🤙🏻
@nathanielngosy2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dominic. Thanks for this comparison. Can all these square hoods accept filters (UV, diffusion, etc.). If so, what's the sequence? The filter is screwed first before the square hood? You mentioned that circular hoods provide better prevention of flares and perhaps "may" not cast a shadow when using flash. Which would you recommend for round hoods then? And do they attach similarly with UV filters as well with square hoods? Thank you.
@DominicPhillip2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes they can. My order is filter first then hood on top. But in all honesty, if you’re looking for best overall performance I’d go with a round hood. They just perform better, but don’t look nearly as sweet!

Question about the Squarehood: After you get the hood mounted, can you unscrew the entire assembly? When you screw it back on, will the hood always be perfectly positioned?

Thanks for the comparison! How good is the light block from the Haoge and YC Onion hoods? I currently have the Squarehood model V, but it's not really functional for blocking stray light.

There's honestly more for aesthetic than performance. I found the traditional circular square hood to perform better, but I did get decent blockage from both the Haoge and YC. It's definitely enough to live on my camera daily, but if you're really fighting light regularly I'd stay away.

Sorry man BUT you must be doing something wrong... the little screws need only a very slight amount of pressure to secure the hood. You've probably damaged the filter frame if you had to use a wrench... one little tip if I may: I used 2 very little pieces of the thinnest masking tape I could find on the interior of the screws and that made the fit tighter as well as avoiding putting any marks on the filter (OCD baby).

I totally agree. Not sure why he’s struggling with it.

Why buy something that needs masking tape to work?
@eldiabolico375011 ай бұрын
@@peterwilliams2889I think you can read but as perception is not a given, I will try to explain it again… You don’t NEED to mask anything. The hood fits as it is and it fits great. Now, because the screws are metal-on-metal to keep the hood secure, IF you don’t want to potentially have any marks at all on you cheap or in my case, expensive diffusion filters, two little tape pieces that take 30 sec to cut will prevent that.
@peterwilliams288910 ай бұрын
Thank you for your insult.. But the fact remains that you use masking tape to keep from damaging the product. It’s. just. poor. design. The “perception” of walking around with masking tape on your camera is real. Why would you purchase it?
@eldiabolico375010 ай бұрын
@@peterwilliams2889 what insult? I am just replying in the same tone. People are over sensitive these days… everyone gets offended very easily. Mind that I used the word ‘perception’ and not “intelligence” for that reason explicitly. I’m not implying you’re dummy, only that you don’t understand my point. Nevertheless, I sincerely apologize if I hurt your feelings Peter. I will make my case once again. The product work as it is intended to. There’s no proof of it damaging ANYTHING. I, because I’m kind of paranoid with my gear and those ‘mist’ filters that I use are expensive, decided to add some minuscule pieces of tape so that: 1. The lens hood seats tighter without having to tight the screws too much (again, in my experience they don’t need to be tight but they’re small and people have big hands) 2. Avoid any possible scratches or marks to the filter (not the lens itself) as the metal screws are touching the metal filter

Haoge is pronounced “How Gir”. And you missed a key point: any hood which is wider than the lens barrel will cast shadows when using the built in flash, so only hoods shaped like the Haoge or YC Onion are truly usable.
