It is vital to understand what this camera is and who it is for. And what it isn't. Many people seem to jump on the bandwagon for the wrong reasons, and you see the usual brand fanatics in the comments below with the knives gleefully out that just don't get that this is a go slow thoughtful camera not a pray and spray Sony A9. The series has always been for street and documentary photography. Which lends it also well for a daily camera to grab and to when you otherwise might have left the camera at home, or for a lighter carry for travel, back up or secondary camera. Photography. For these purposes the lens reacts well enough given it's obvious limitations. And it is a solid optical performer also. The reasons to get this camera are the leaf shutter for its silence and high speed sync, the OVF/EVF combo (because you'll use it, not because you think it's cool), the built in ND and the size. Looks should be secondary, but of course it's hard not to be drawn to it even if it's not a good partner for you. It may have reasonably modern video specs, but it has always had video specs reasonably up-to-date for the time. It can't not include video, for marketing reasons. But it is not a video camera. Even if you have never used one before, the compact size, smaller battery, no LM motors in the lens, port placement, UHSI SD card slot should tell you that loud and clear. The potential for overheating in a compact weather sealed camera should also be obvious to experienced users. For those buying their first camera perhaps not, but do your research before dropping such a large sum of money on a camera for looks alone. If you buy this compact camera primarily for its looks to put in a video rig, then you miss the whole point of the camera and will be disappointed. Go ahead, shoot some b-roll alongside the photography which should be the main reason to get it, but don't buy it primarily for video. If you buy this instead of the X-s20 for video, then it's a vanity purchase. Some of the negatives pointed out in the video are fair, even if emphasised for dramatic effect. More experience with the camera helps though. I've had mine a month, and have in the past had a V (selling it paid for the VI and then some), and just like with any camera, once you know the quirks, you instinctively start working with the camera not against it. Film Sims don't slow the camera down as such - you can't shoot without them. But some do need more processing power than others. Looking at you classic neg. Clarity does slow the buffering speed down. There's a quick solution - if this is an issue for you, disable clarity in the custom setting. Or don't add it to certain sims like classic neg. No need to be a martyr, you don't need to use that trending recipe if it impacts your preferred shooting style. Like using it with clarity but want to shoot more quickly because your kid does something cute - switching to low speed burst disables clarity and it's still easy to just take one shot. Bracketing disables it also. Not sure which film SIM suits a custom setting best, you can shoot three different film sims at once and saving the four files (including raw) takes about the same time as saving a recipe with clarity. Can save retaking shots and waiting between each. The lightroom problem isn't a problem in Capture One, so not really a Fuji issue. Open a raw in C1 and by default the parameters you applied in camera will be applied to the raw as a starting point (you can disable this), so b&w is b&w when opening the raw. It's a better match for Fuji cameras for various reasons. But this is a main one. And C1 worked with Fuji to get as close to the original Sims as possible. Battery life too is more than reasonable and you can far exceed the quoted battery life - like with most cameras. First of all, you do not need IBIS 90% of the time. So turn it off when not needed. And never have it on continuously, it's not a 500mm Tele prime. Stop playing around with the menus and settings all the time! Yesterday in my lunch hour I took a walk to test some new custom settings out. Did some adjustments using the screen, ibis on shot only, 70 shots and didn't lose a single battery bar. I think these tales of diminishing the battery quickly should be taken with a pinch of salt there's a lot of factors involved, not least whether any video was shot in addition to the shots. But carrying a spare is always good, regardless of camera. Personally, I think it's a good move to not include things like chargers and hoods in the box. Keeps the price down a little, many peoples already have them and for filters etc. that's very personal anyway. It's far from the perfect camera, and ideally it isn't your only camera. It's not for newbies buying it for the looks. It's not a video camera. But get to know it, accept the weaknesses for what they are and learn to live with or even appreciate the quirks. It's still ok to freak out every now and again when a random setting has disabled another random setting and you can't figure out why, like zone focussing disabling the mini EVF display. But just enjoy the shooting experience, interacting with all those people who ask about your film camera and subjects that are just much more relaxed and less camera shy. My biggest issue with the camera is the focal length. This is the most important aspect of this camera and is rarely mentioned. Also not here. I used to love 23mm APSC, but now I've moved more to 18mm and 27mm as my preferred focal lengths. Luckily the wide angle converter is tiny and doesn't seem to impact IQ much if at all and the digital teleconverter is nice for a longer perspective. But if you don't usually shoot 23, or are not a fan of the focal length, obviously do not buy. And that includes the commentator below complaining this can neither take selfies or shoot wildlife (no shit Sherlock, but seriously make your mind up which way you are trolling!).

@@SnowBob302Well first up, you can't just walk into a store or order on Amazon and realistically expect to have it even by July. There's a long waiting list and that might impact your trip. Order now and maybe you'll have it by September. Maybe. But secondly this is about as far away from an iPhone as you can get. There are no training wheels, there's no auto mode. Sure you could put all the dials on A (automatic), but even that isn't full auto, it still leaves you to control a lot that impacts on performance and output. To get good results out of this camera you need to understand the relationship between ISO, shutter speed and aperture, and how changing one will impact on the other two and why that's important for any given scene and the image quality that results. And so also by how much to change each. White balance isn't just on a sliding scale but adjustments are one a four-way axis and far more nuanced. Certain things you can leave for later, like the manual flash controls, but from the start you are hands on with all the settings. Honestly, if someone asks why it's not for beginners that just wants to take some snaps, then I really don't think it's the camera for them. Check out the x-t50 also, you've got a full auto mode to help you out and to progress, and more beginner friendly dials.

@@SnowBob302 They say that because of its advance flash related features and internal ND filters. To get the most out of these you need to know what you're doing. They add a lot of features and complexity that most beginners aren't ready to use so the camera is more complicated. But depending on the kind of beginner you are, these features can actually let you learn a lot more about photography and they can keep you interested and learning for a lot longer. Plus at the end of the day, if you have a nice camera that you enjoy using, you are much more likely to develop a stronger passion and get the most satisfaction out of the hobby. As far as video goes, put it on a gimbal and call it a day. That's where this camera shines. I love how you can assign the ND filter to a button so you can go from indoors to outdoors without cranking the shutter. I think most video guys will use an external audio recorder and use the cameras built in audio as a scratch track but if I wanted to go direct in cam, a 3.5 to 2.5 cables is like 7 dollars which is pretty cheap. I agree, the lack of battery charger is annoying but other brands are sadly doing this as well like the Sony A73, A7C, A6700, Lumix S5-2, Nikon Zf etc..

What are people expecting? Anyone who complains about the extra cost of accessories, I mean what do you want? Do other cameras come with a grip or lens hood or battery charger, and extra batteries? I mean if you buy lets say a sony a7iv which is $2500 just for the body, it comes with absolutely nothing. You buy a sony lens for 1k+ of course it comes with a lens hood, but you've spent over $3500 now. Not to mention having to buy an additional nd filter. Also, sure some cameras are "weather sealed" but if you're not buying the $1-2k+ range lens and buying cheap couple hundred dollar lens, they are not weather sealed so it's pointless.. People need to understand this is a secondary camera, that compliments your main camera. If you're hoping to get this because of the social media hype, you're already in the wrong market from the beginning.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 6 ай бұрын
You can buy cameras as a "kit" with a kit lens: they have good enough grips to hold the camera, long enough battery not to require spares to get through a day of photo taking, weather sealing as standard, ability to add filters without extra accessories, a lens hood, etc, etc. When did you ever need to buy an accessory in order to be able to use your existing filters? - that's something valid to mention. That's the thing, most reviews make it look like it's a great primary camera to do everything, that's just not the case, it's an accessory for your existing camera :)
@WhatThePheel
@WhatThePheel 6 ай бұрын
@@DigiDriftZone That's the thing most reviewers do not understand what this camera is for, it is a hobbyist b roll / travel compact. Once again, a camera that has those specs with the "kit lens" will range you over $2500. Not to mention terrible glass for kit lens, unless you op for the above $3000 kits. So would you rather spend $1600 + $200 worth of accessories or $2500+? Why do people not understand this? If this camera is anyone's first "high" end camera, buy something else. You don't understand it, and don't need it. I get that most cameras come weather sealed. But did you know that if you buy a lens that isn't weather sealed it's self. It literally will get damaged? So buy a $50 weather seal kit or a $800+ lens that's weather sealed?
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 6 ай бұрын
@@WhatThePheel I agree for the most part but let me push back about price. For example, X-S20 with 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens (much better lens in my opinion) is £1.3k on e-infin, an X-100VI is £2.1k. Replace the kit lens with something like a 27mm pancake that is weather resistant and you can bring the price even slightly lower. It will be just as compact for all intents and purposes and solves nearly all the problems with the X100VI: better battery, better grip, weather sealing (or great flexibility), ability to use filters, much better for video, etc, etc, etc. But it won't have the retro dials and won't look quite as pretty :)
@WhatThePheel
@WhatThePheel 6 ай бұрын
@@DigiDriftZone So we are basing this on the specs that match the x100vi. Of course there would be plenty of options out there with lower specs for a cheaper price. You keep pointing out not being able to use filters, the weather sealing kit can be used with any 49mm filter. It does not require you to use an UV filter to be weather sealed, you can use any 49mm filter for the weather sealing. Also what filter are you using when it has built in ND? Not sure where you are getting your prices from but the X-S20 is on B&H for $1299 and if you plan on getting the 27mm it adds an additional $399 USD so your total would be $1700 before tax, compared to $1599 USD before tax for the x100vi, so it comes pretty close. But on a second note, if you were to actually get a camera with the same specs than it would be the XT5. The XT5 is $1699 USD + $399 USD for the 27mm = $2100 USD. I guess it's all about preferences of what people view as value. If you are a novice photographer, definitely pick up something under $1000 that has interchangeable lens. If you already have a camera with a plethora of lens, than this would be a great compact travel camera and b-roll camera.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 6 ай бұрын
@@WhatThePheel I would question the "lower spec", it's the same processor, same 6.2k but less crop actually, better preamps, better (and articulating) LCD, much better battery, better IBIS, better EVF (though not a hybrid one) and it is interchangeable lenses. Also in dynamic range testing, the XTrans4 sensor gives significantly less noise across the board, has more dynamic range and has advantages in low light. Plus with the ancient lens on the X100VI the practical difference in resolution is barely visible and only at higher F stops. I'm in the UK, I can't speak to US prices, both the XT5 and X-S20 kits are cheaper than the X100VI making them far more attractive options and the X-S20 is virtually the same size with a pancake lens.

I've had it a similar time and some fair comments, but I think above all you need to remember what it is. It's a compact fixed lens camera - it shouldn't even be compared to an ILC, let alone an R6 with a 1.4 lens! Basically if you really like changing lenses or flexibility of having the option to do so, or have never restricted yourself to a 23 lens before, really carefully consider if this is for you. If I use the x-t5 with one lens only, it's the 23mm, so my motivation was to downsize open up new creative possibilities for those days. Nothing you said though should be deal breakers for most people approaching this as a minimalist prime only camera for photography, really. The negative noise reduction is a great tip. When I first moved to Fuji years ago, I really disliked the smoothened output with skin colour bleeding into the eye whites even until I figured this out, and to use capture one over lightroom. Always -2 or below for me. Never had an issue since. Really curious about your EVF issue though. Maybe this is your setting? My EVF turns off as soon as I move my eye away even in play mode. Sometimes the screen stays physically up (depends on sequence of actions by user) but the display is always off. Play raises the EVF but it is off, switch to shoot and the EVF goes down revealing OVF. However view play in viewfinder then switch to LCD, the EVF stays there but switched off. Quirk of the camera I guess. It's my second camera to an x-t5. I think the battle for sharpness above character and other aspects of lenses these days is ridiculous, regardless of system. But the x100vi is plenty sharp enough for what it is, especially stopped down to f2.8, and at MFD f4. That's my main complaint really, I have the 23 1.4 LM on the x-t5, so I wish I didn't have to stop this down as I actually prefer the character of the x100vi to that lens overall. The images don't degrade when you crop in in camera. It's just a crop. Resolution drops, that's it. Naturally in post you can't crop further into the 10MP jpeg taken in camera at 2x mag. but that would be the same with any cam. Not something that ever bothered me, but you can transfer RAW via the app now. Full Res video has always been possible, so welcome for some I'm sure. I actually find it annoying reviewing images now to have two of everything on my phone! Personally, I wish the x100vi was an x80. So while I enjoy it a lot, I think it's got almost too close to the x-t5 in features and even size. I'd love a smaller, perhaps even less well specced version. Will keep on using for now, and will be my only camera this summer vacation, or I might put the 90 on the x-t5 as well, but the news of a gfx version next year has piqued my interest. Bigger, slower, but genuinely different. Will be adding a used gfx50R and 50 3.5 "pancake" (27 1.8 APSC) to see how much gfx is hype say the viltrox 27 1.2 at f1.8 on the x-t5. And importantly which format I prefer for a rangefinder. Love this camera. Love using a variety of lenses. Hard to balance the two!

@@brownbear100 I think it's still a bit overhyped on the internet, but I am starting to love the camera with its quirks (the EVF is off, but if you press play, it closes the OVF for no reason). I've now had more time with the Fuji X100V. On my recent trip with my cheerleading team, I gave the camera to the girls, and it was perfect. It's easy to photograph with, lightweight, and looks cool. They preferred using the Fuji over the R6 (24-70 2.8). We made some memorable pictures, and they had a blast photographing with it. For my professional work, I need a full-frame camera with decent lenses, but the Fuji is now my EDC, which I also use as a teaching camera. It's perfect for bike rides, coffee shop hopping, and evening strolls. I can't see replacing the Fuji anytime soon. My wish would be for the Fuji X100 with a full-frame sensor and a 1.4 35mm or 50mm lens in the same form factor, which I know is only a dream and not possible. Rumors say --> GFX with a Fixed lens ^^

I had considered a Q3. But I had then to consider what does that mean for my x-t5, which I love. The x100vi fits because it's compact, limiting, different, quirky. The leica was much bigger at least in the lens department, less refined I felt with the screen and didn't feel like a second camera. Irrespective of price differences, the x100vi fitted better with my overal set-up. But when I bought my V in 2020, I paid €1100 and they were being reduced in the shops. A Q2 then just seemed so much more also. As soon as shops stopped taking orders I sold it - it was obvious to me a new one was in the pipeline and I didn't want to leave cash on the table. Then earlier this year I found another cheap V with 200 shots just after the announcement. Thought check if I still liked it. I liked everything but the sensor (never was a fan of the x-t3/4 or x100v sensor) so picked up a VI then sold the V, again for a lot more than I bought as supplies had dried up of the VI. In total for two Vs, a VI, extra Fuji batteries, charger, Fuji hood, WCL 100ii converter, I've paid about €900. Considering trading up to a used GFXR50 + 50mm pancake. Should be able to get one for the same as I sell the VI. But would run both in parallel to start. And hope for a true compact to back up the x-t5. An x80 or Limix LXIII would be great. I think that's the good and bad about the x100vi. It really is fantastic, but at the same time leaves you wanting more.

I agree with you, just to summarise and to add a few more gotchas: outdated lens with loud/slow focusing (audible when recording video), 35mm f/3 FF equivalent so no selfies or landscape or wildlife, a bit tight indoors, limited background separation for talking head, lower dynamic range than an iPhone 15Pro (tested by CINED), poor-ish low light performance, no flip screen, poor battery life so you have to buy/bring spares (and potentially remove the tripod plate to swap each time), not great for videography (massive crop in 4k60 or 6.2k, awful rolling shutter, no 3.5mm mic input, ports block grip, drop in dynamic range in higher resolutions), subpar autofocus (improved but far from Sony/Canon), slow performance with film simulations, low resolution hybrid evf, no lens hood / ability to add filters / weather sealing / grip without additional costs, etc, etc. It’s not for me but it is a very pretty camera :)

Best option I've found for doing video on Fuji with a loud lens (and internal mic), is to use AF-S and focus with the shutter button as needed. You can also manual focus in this mode but not with focus peaking, which is a downside of how Fujis are set up. On Sony you can assign a button to intantly autofocus from within MF mode, but not Fuji AFAIK. If you do it like this at least the lens isn't hunting and making tons of noise.

I have one that I ordered on day 1. I have purposely not used it whilst assessing its use case for me, as the dealer will take it back into stock unused. I agree with all your points on extras having spent a lot getting filters, thumb grips, extra batteries etc from Amazon. So far here in the U.K. it has all added up to £1850 and no protective case as yet. I had a great chat with another Fuji dealer on Friday who is also a studio photographer using Fuji G series. I explained I wanted a high quality small(er) camera than my pro Canon DSLR kit with some weatherproofing and versatility including 4K. He straightaway said send the X100VI back and invest in a Fuji XT-5 and either a pro level prime like the 16/2.8 or the 23/2 to start or one the excellent kit zooms, the 18-55 being the most compact. Fuji publish a useful list of their lenses capable of getting the optimum out of the sensor. A lot of their compact primes do and are significantly cheaper and more weatherproof than the Canon equivalents. On the other hand I may just stick with my much loved and well used EOS M3,5 and set of Canon M lenses. The Canon UI is just superb and Canon RAW an industry standard. For a laugh I the other day I used the M to EF adapter on my M5 with the excellent EF 70-300 mk2 and it all worked, lightening fast focus, IS, and gave me a 480mm f5.6 readout. No 4K, weather sealing, recipes etc but great quality for the sensor. Not well balanced but functional…..

I’m actually finding autofocus in any mode to be quite horrible. Whilst the green boxes that you see may indicate that the camera has acquired focus and locked on to the subject, closer inspection of the images after the fact show otherwise. I’m left with many of my images mostly front focused, resulting in soft and blurry images which is an absolute deal breaker for me. I’m really hoping that this is something that is happening to everyone else too because that would at least tell me that it isn’t a QC issue with my camera and will be something that FUJIFILM can fix in a firmware update. Additionally, I don’t think this lens is actually resolving the full 40MP of this sensor. I’m finding that even with those photos where focus is good, the resolution does not seem to be 40MP. I think the lens is this camera’s biggest bottleneck to truly getting the best of this sensor. I really want to love this camera, but so far, this issue is a real deal breaker for me.

Hi Kyle, why do you own both a X100VI and Q3?! I'd sell both and get a M11 with a 28mm and 35mm. . .
@kylemeshna

I wanted to test both extensively and figure out which one is better suited for my need. Plus I think, given making videos like this is kinda my job, it's important to be comfortable and knowledgable with as many camera systems as possible so I can make better videos for yall. I think the Q3 is the one I'll be keeping as my daily camera, but that's a topic for another vid

A new M11 with new 28 Lux and 35 Cron is around $20K, though. Used X100VI would sell for $2.2K, Q3 for $5.5K, so you that's an extra ~$12K difference. I guess if money is no object, and you don't mind the loss of extreme close focus, autofocus, and a built-in EVF, then go for it :)

Yet this is the most successful camera ever sold in the history of cameras, over a million units sold. Dissipate what you did not know before buying, everyone else did. Fyi: Fuji will soon announce the ability to export Film recipes to other cameras and as a sharable Lightroom preset. look for this around May 2024. Keep the Fuji videos coming.

I think the availability issue with the VI is ridiculous... and i still don't understand why Canon or Nikon have not come out with a X100 of their own. It makes no sense to me !

Are you telling me that the x100vi doesn't shoot true raw at all? Like we only get options between jpeg and heif?
@kylemeshna
@kylemeshna 5 ай бұрын
No it also shoots RAW. Just saying you now also get HEIF in addition to jpg, which has more information than Jpg. Lots of people go nuts for the film recipes, but those aren’t available for RAW

This video is not negative, on the contrary, you're telling us about quirks of using this camera, if that's not a positive information I don't know what is. Watching this we now have almost everything in hand to make the purchase consciously instead of being brainwashed by hype and hypers.

I seriously do not get the point of fixed focal length and especially at that price point. Buy a compact interchangeable lens mirrorless, go out with a single lens et voila! You have a fixed focal length camera. One which can be changed to a different focal length the next day or used interchangeably in a single outing. Is it just some ideological purity spiral kinda thing?

@@andrewsarchus6036 ....and in comparison of the whole camera size and weight with lens attached compared to that of the X100 23mm f2 it is what then? Of course it also lacks a leaf shutter and do you have the OVF in that body? There is more to the X100. You are comparing apples and oranges.
