What Fuji has done here is amazing. I expect more FF models to go shutterless in the future, probably getting 50fps and other ridiculous features. But 8fps on MF? With Fuji's increasingly great AF on board? This is awfully close to "good enough" performance for pretty much whatever. Would I buy a GFX? Don't know - I'd have to try some lenses and do lots of math. Big, heavy setup for sure. Yet definitely a step in the right direction . . .

And 5fps without blackout, can you imagine? If the AF is good, they have a killer camera here.

My personal philosophy is that there is a time spend and a time to save money. I don't think that this is the time to save and go for the marked down previous models to save a few quid. I think the jump here is significant enough that the saving will lead to disappointment. If the jump was less significant I'd say save the entire cost of the camera and don't upgrade, but I think in this case with all the QoL and UX considerations it's worth going for this one. It sounds silly, but I think that experience is definetly a get what you pay for kind of deal here, in a positive way, and I haven't felt that way about Fujifilm since the X-T2. So I'm hopeful for the future of the brand.

When people will realize this protruding viewfinder gives you 1x magnification, they will stick to this 100ii. Since magnification is proportional to sensor size, 1x on this is not only bigger compared to the 0.8x or 0.9x we're used to in full frame cameras due to the simple increase of the magnification, but even bigger since the sensor is bigger. You win 2 times here. This is a dream.

Hello Gordon, I’ve gotten this camera for 4 months now. I’ve watched your review multiple times (just like your other reviews and your book). It’s amazing especially when paired with 55mm f/1.7. The 20-35mm f/4, not so much, but there’s no better alternative. If you do end up making a follow up review I have some requests: 1. Video in practice. You and ZY Cheng are the only two I’ve seen who even attempted video review. But they cover only the crop factor and resolution implications, not in real use. And if it’s not meant for real use, why not? 2. Flash photography. Aside from occasional mentions of the sync speed, no one seems to have put it to test. 3. Adapting DSLR lenses. It’s no secret native options are few. Kevin Deal talked about adapting vintage lenses. But I found little on adapting say Canon EF lenses in practice. Cheers

As Ken Wheeler said some years ago, Fujifilm pretty much dominated the medium format segment overnight as soon as they released the GFX 50s. They have been winning ever since. If I had a large budget, and wanted supreme image quality, it would be a tough choice between this camera and a hypothetical Leica SL3. It really would be.

@@tallaganda83 Well, I have seen results from the Sony 60Mpx sensor. Leica might use that. It's on par with most medium format sensors. And the SL system is designed for speed. For narrower AOV, you will have to crop the GFX files, or use a TC. I prefer tighter AOV. OTOH, the GFX has two TS lenses. Leica has only one.

I remember when I upgraded my original 50S to the original 100, and I remember, watching Gordon's review on that, I was absolutely blown away and YES, that was truly an upgrade. A radical new camera in every way, 100MP vs 50, PD AF vs contrast, 4K video vs 1080p, IBIS vs none. Now from the 100 to the 100II? This is no upgrade nor a "new" camera.. it's called a REVISION no matter how it's sold as or marketed as.

Yes that's very true. Will be a long time till then as there is no sensor on the market nor anywhere on Sony's roadmap (who makes them), plus the necessary processing power that using today's cameras silicon would melt them away and chew the batteries within minutes. Till then I enjoy the gear I already have for work and personal imaging and absolutely delight on the very opposite of "what's new" by revisiting vintage camera (re) reviews on your other channel that is LITERALLY my favorite viewing on KZbin. You're wrong. FF is larger than APS-C by a factor of 2.28-2.53 (depending on which APS-C we are considering). The GFX sensor is only 1.7 times larger than FF. So the difference between APS-C and FF is noticeably bigger than between FF and Fuji's medium format.
@andersistbesser

@EdvardKALEN
@EdvardKALEN Жыл бұрын
@@andersistbesser Both in the video and now in the comments we are talking about the AREA of the frame, not the diagonal. If you want to talk about the crop factor, then yes, Canon has 1.6, Nikon/Sony has 1.5. But the Fuji crop factor is 0.78, which means a ratio of about 1.27 to full frame (which again shows that the difference between APS-C and FF is larger). Dude, you need to improve your math and not argue in the comments.
@monstermiu
@monstermiu 5 ай бұрын
@@EdvardKALENNo, you're wrong. The ratio can't tell the actual size difference. The mf area = 1452, ff = 864, apsc = 384. The mf - ff = 588, still bigger than the gap of ff to apsc(which is 480), its because the mf volumn is very large, it dont have to need a bigger ratio.

An interesting camera and one could say; "But the cost !" However a couple of weeks back I briefly got to play for a couple of hours with a GFXsII 50mpx camera and cost wasn't really my main concern. I suspect that the actual body is pretty similar to the one you are reviewing and combined with a zoom lens, I thought the whole thing was pretty awkward to hand hold, one for a tripod for sure and hardly for 'street photography'. Obviously this would be a brilliant camera for landscape photography but I'm not sure that I could afford the cost of the porters to cart the kit around for me :) Seriously though, whilst people may well lust after it because of it's 102 mpx, as I have used a Canon 5DS for the past 5 years which ergonomically is far better to handle, the downside to high megapixel cameras lies in the file size and the impact that has on post and storage, 50mpx RAW files can make many PC's eyes water ! For me, ergonomics and cost aside, these type of cameras are rather niche tools which if you need them are invaluable but I don't suppose they will sell many, neither do they and hence the price.

@johnhaynes9910
@johnhaynes9910 Жыл бұрын
@@photophilsteingard8374 Perhaps not the point I am making. It's not just about the body weight, there are the lenses to consider too which are extra but it goes beyond this, it is the ergonomics of the combined package. I have a 1DX MkII and whilst that is heavy, because of the body design and combined with say a 300mm prime, it works, there is a balance that you would probably have to add the battery grip to the GFX, more bulk. I handled a R3 and thought that even better than my 1DX but it is not a 'fanboy' brand thing, it is about the design used in a real world situation. This camera (GFX) will suit some people but I suspect that it is a very niche product.

Interesting commentary as always, Gordon! In your opinion, if you were a 100% stills only, landscape, and small product photographer, which MF system do you think would work best (Hasselblad X2D or this Fujifilm GFX 100 II), including evaluating lens sharpness and detail rendition, assuming one shoots 100% tripod-mounted, and 10 second self timer for optimum sharpness? (For wildlife. I use a Nikon Z8 with the NIkkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3, so I'm not necessarily seeking "speed" in a potential MF System.) Thank you!

I think that the only weakness of this camera is the limited sync speed. I do not think that Fujifilm will ever release a leafshutter lens* to shoot at 1/2000s with a flash/strobe. We probably have to wait until the first global shutter camera release. * I know there are adapters to mount Hasselblad lenses, but then you do not get AF work along with the leafshutter. Been shooting a canon 5d mark iv since 2016, and looking to switch to mirrorless. Whilst I know if I went to R5 I’d see a massive difference in autofocus. Having seen Fuji GFX wonder how this would compare in performance to my Dslr, obviously image quality will be massively improved, but thinking on other features

@@cameralabs I meant the 100-400, sorry, my mistake... anyways, I get it, a lot has been said already about both Sigma lenses for other mounts. But I'm curious about if it keeps up with the demands of the 40MP APSC sensor because I'm in the market for a fairly potent telephoto lens and Sigma's price tag is hard to overlook. That head to head comparison sounds great! Cheers.

I was hoping for dual CFexpress. Otherwise, this camera is just about perfect. 3 batteries with the grip. It's about time someone did that. I want to know the burst rate over time with just the CFexpress and with both cards in duplicate mode. As the review said, it's not a sports camera. Something else is needed for dog agility, and other fast action, but still. Knowing what is capable for burst mode over 10 seconds with both cards in duplicate mode would be nice.

Fujifilm has been allowing 2+1 batteries with their grips on the X series for some time, but it remains pretty unique in the industry. As for bursts, they have the various combinations in the specs on their website, but since one will be SD, you'll need to take those time, not the CFE ones.

@@cameralabsthe only other manufacturer I saw do that was Sigma, with the sdQuattro series. The PG-41 grip is a worthy addition to the body and let's you hot swap the batteries. However, unlike the Fuji system, the sdQ cameras use all three batteries at the same time, which reduces the overall heat from all the heavy processing the Foveon sensor demands while increasing overall run time. Actually, if you haven't yet, I'd love to see your review of that camera some time on your other channel.

Just wondering about the AF speed, how does it compare to the X-H2S and X-H2? I know it’s absurd comparing AF speeds in the 2 systems, but the only reason I didn’t complement my Fujifilm X system with the GFX system was the slow handling and AF of the GFX100S. I choose instead to keep my Sony full frame system. If this GFX100 II’s speed and AF is significantly better than the GFX100S, I would definitely reconsider moving to the X/GFX dual system, with the Fujifilm X system doing most of the regular sports/travel duties.

@@RM-hy4so it really depends on the subject type, situation and lens, the latter especially so in this system.
