Hi Maarten! Great video as always! Just to clarify, the X-E3 will include the EF-X8 hotshoe flash. Just like the X-T2. To help centre the tripod mount, we do have the optional metal hand grip. This is also compatible with most Arca Swiss tripods.

I have to agree with the below comments, Maarten. You present a 100% thorough review of each camera, it's menu system, set-up, advantages and disadvantages. Totally professional, generally neutral and with comments on your own preferences which is absolutely fine. The only thing I'd note is that everything goes so fast (yes, I realize you're 30 minute videos would otherwise be two hours), that I have to go back over certain parts of your clips again and again to ensure I caught everything. I don't know how you keep everything lined up so methodically! I know where I need to turn to learn more about my X-E3 than I've figured out myself. Thanks!

Another great video!! A quick way to enable back button focus is to set the focus mode selector on the front of the camera to M and then you can use the AF-L button for back button focus, its a lot less hassle than going into the menus. One point though, in 4k video the X-E3 uses the full width of the sensor and uses pixel binning exactly the same as the X-T20 does, you do not have a reduced angle of view like you do on the X-T2 that crops 4k video. This is with firmware version 1.0, maybe you were using a pre-production version of firmware, but as shipped there is no crop.

With regards to a tripod mount and the battery door, they did the same thing with the X-E2. If you add the optional grip, it relocates the tripod mount so the lens is properly centered and the battery door is accessible.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the note. That would also move the lens mount higher - I found I was unable to mount some of my larger lenses using the quick release for my Manfrotto 701HD head. (The workaround is to mount the camera backwards on the plate, then they can be mounted.
@tomscott44387 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Raises it about 1/2", so no clearance issues. I had one for my X-E2 and was able to use the 16 f/1.4 and my 50-140 f/2.8 and the quick release mount for my Oben head without any trouble. Since moving on the to the X-Pro-2 I also added the grip to that body and it provides similar results. Speaking of which, interested to hear your thoughts comparing the Pro-2 to the X-E3. Similar "rangefinder" style but a big difference in price. Do you think weather sealing, dual card slots, and the hybrid viewfinder justify an $800 price difference? There may be other differences but those are the ones than stick out IMHO. Since you have now recently reviewed both I wondered if you had opinion.
@abhishekvsmalyala7 жыл бұрын
Maarten Heilbron another possible work around is the Gariz leather case that shifts the tripod jack to the center.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Re X-Pro2 to X-E3 - don't really want to start with the "too many models to comprehend or properly differentiate", never mind pricing. In my mind you'd have to love the hybrid viewfinder to buy the X-Pro2, I much prefer the X-T2. The X-E3's only serious downside (unless you're somehow in need of FLog) is the non-swivel screen. If the X-E3 had a rotating/swivel screen it would be close to ideal.

This is perhaps your best video yet, and it caused me to buy the camera packaged with the 23mm lens. I had to re-watch in order to set the camera up. Because I already own the X-Pro2 and two X-T2s, I am finding this to be a bit on the small side to operate. I suspect that I will continue to use the X-Pro2 for the street, but this one begs to be the travel body; drop the body alone into one pocket of a sport coat, and the lens into the other.

At 6:45 you say that the screen follows when you turn the camera. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. On every camera I've ever owned, the (not yet recorded) image stays upright in relation to the ground at all times. (Which is what it SHOULD do, I think). The difference seems to be that on the X-E3 there is a lag, so that the image rotation is jerky. But maybe I just misunderstand....
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Ah, sorry, I should have been clearer. What rotates is the information display on screen - of course, the image stays upright. The information appears right way up at -90 and +90 rotates to the ground. The screen looks laggy because of my recording.

Fabulous video. Thanks for all the work to make it so comprehensive with thoughtful opinions and without the sensationalism. Much appreciated! Yet another very comprehensive review. Thanks Maarten! I'm actually planning to get the X-E3 (my first Fuji) as an alternative to my Nikon DSLR system when I want to carry a smaller, more portable and discreet camera. By the way, of the many reviews I've watched on Fuji cameras, none of the reviews mention if the frame rates, both mechanical and electronic, will AE and AF on all those frame rates, whereas most will mention it for Nikon frame rates. Am I missing something?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thank you - I appreciate the kind words. I'm assuming you mean the burst rate - yes, good question. I'm always testing those in manual exposure mode to determine what the potential maximum is, adding AF and AE will slow the speed, the extent of the speed reduction being somewhat scene and action dependent. Older slower processing technology locked those settings for a higher frame rate, Fuji does not lockup those settings when shooting at the highest rate on their latest models. There is no setting where you explicitly give up AE and AF to increase speed, as there used to be.

Nice video, very well made. I only missed more information about the touchscreen, as the X-E3 has a much more touchscreen focused approach than other Fujifilm cameras. Especially how well does it work? How responsive is it? Is there any lack? Is it as good as the implementation of the Panasonic cameras?

Thanks a lot Maarten, I'll be replaying your video once I received the camera. I've bought it last week, but with a different lens: the 18 - 55 mm...I also ordered an adaptor to mount my Contax/Yashika Carl Zeiss lenses, I'm interested to find out how the camera will render images using manual lenses from another brand. I'll report again soon. Thanks again for your video, it clarifies a lot of things already!

Great review! Love the depth of the information, as well as the detail with which you present it. Couldn't help but think there's no way they _overlooked_ the off centre tripod position - it was a deliberate choice since they know the fanbase is bothered by this. So it's probably for another design consideration of the inner workings that are not visible to us non-fuji-techs :-) I too was thinking: "Well no wonder it doesn't focus on a doll" with the eye focus reliability remark, but you probably know what you're doing with that :-) Thanks again. Great review. PS: Your name sounds so Dutch it's weird!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thank you - that's very kind of you to say. Deliberate, yes but misguided. Those dolls (I use them all the time) typically focus better than real faces - I was quite surprised when it failed. Not so weird, as I was born in Holland.

Another excellent review. You produce among the best camera equipment reviews. Edit to add: Can this camera be easily used by a wearer of glasses i.e. eye relief?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Not sure what you mean - but I was able to shoot without my glasses, as the diopter can accommodate my prescription. When I use my glasses, I wasn't seeing all of the image.

Thank you for the detailed review. Is "downgraded" chrome setting a decent replacement for flog video mode?
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Not really as the dynamic range doesn't change. It's just an easier way to get a look in camera as opposed to trying to create it in post. But I do find that part of the attraction of FLog is the look of a flattened response curve in the middle tonal range, which those settings do provide.

Hi Maarten, Surely I will never use all the possibilities of the Fuji XE-3, but I am very attracted by its appearance of apparent simplicity. And yet, despite all the possible settings, is it not possible to assign the video recording to any of the Fn buttons? I find it boring to have to manipulate the touch screen menus to record a video. I haven't found an answer to this anywhere (not even in the user manual). Hence my second question ... between this Fuji and the Panasonic GX9, that if it has a direct button for video recording, which would be your favorite, since in the second-hand market they almost cost the same? Thank you very much and greetings from Spain.
@MaartenHeilbron4 жыл бұрын
I don't have a solution for you, there is no simple one-b button video record function. If your need is for simple video recording, then clearly you are better off with the GX9.

Mr Heilbron, your continued efforts in putting out great reviews border on the sublime. Thank you very much. I know that you have a detailed X-E3-X-T20 comparison, but another one with the updated firmware would also be very interesting. Thank you.

Great video, thank you. I'm curious what you think about the (smaller compared to X-E2s) EVF together with glasses.
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
I didn't have any issues - but I've seen someone who doesn't wear glasses complaining. You'll have to check it out for yourself. I think the diopter adjustment for my prescription makes an adjustment so that I'm not affected.

Maarten. This is the first time I’ve come across your channel. Best hands on review I’ve seen and looking forward to checking out your others. When you shoot RAW on Fujis is it possible to generate several different jpgs with different film simulations allied? Can it be done at time of shooting. Eg one colour and one mono jpg?
@MaartenHeilbron6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. Yes, once you have the RAW file, you can use the RAW conversion in playback to create versions using all of the film sims. There's also a Fuji desktop app that does that. While shooting you can save a JPEG file (black and white) and RAW with full colour. Then if you want other variations, you can do that in playback.

Should I get upcoming A7 III, XE3, X100F, RX10 IV, RX100 V, or an iPhone X as my first camera? I plan to take it with me when I go out and even not on a photography trip but just shopping or short travel, a bit street photography or you can call it life style(just found this term from the XE3 ads) shooting because I take all kinds of photos and some random photos too, I'm a Sony fan(Leica and Hasselblad too, but those are too expensive for now), I want to invest in Sony lens more than Fuji, Fuji camera I only like X100F, fixed lens camera that work out of the box, limited fixed lens but force you to be more creativity like how I shoot with my iPhone, but then XE3 seem to be a great camera, but I not sure if I want to invest in Fuji system because Sony system and the real life color looks nicer and more useful(since Fuji color tend to be more film or photo look instead of real life so when you want to shoot how's the real life look, you can't with Fuji) and more third party lens maker build for Sony A7 camera. For Sony, I don't like A6XXX series camera because it feel like a half boiled camera, maybe is the mindset I have since it was called NEX6 because it is a mid range camera between NEX5 and NEX7, and (for me) they don't have a make sense APSC system and not much high quality APSC lens, so it's a bad invest I guess, which only left the upcoming A7 III to choose, I love the A7 system, and I don't think the smaller APSC camera will be easier for to carry since they both not pocketable and end up in a same sling style bag, differences should be weight and grip. RX10 and RX100 cameras lineup are perfect but since they are fixed lens, not sure should I get one of them as first camera, RX100 I can take it to anywhere, RX10 is a little bigger than A7 so end up in a sling bag too so choosing it should compare to A7 lineup usability scenarios, if I get RX100 I not sure it is good to shoot and learn manual or I will end up shoot auto all the time because it's too small and hard to control I believe majority I will shoot close distance and landscape and artitechure style of distance, bird and sky and moon are something I like to try when I get a real camera, sometime but rarely I might shoot live performance, and if I get a interchangeable camera, I will just get a lens to shoot for long first because I still have other things I want to buy and invest in my next plan and dreams, so a 35mm(or 23 in APSC camera term) lens is what I will get first X100F I not sure if it should still in the list of consideration or think of this lineup again when they bring 4K, touchscreen, and better shaper lens on it first on the next one iPhone X? 4K 60fps, low bit rate but I sure the quality will still great, and it's a phone so it cover everything on the go, just use it to do everything and not replaceable battery which will be a pain when battery low, and I was in a trip where the weather is very hot under the bright sunny day, I can't shoot video because the phone is too hot, I guess if I depend on my phone to do so much stuffs will make the lifespan of my phone shorter too which is not great for a kidney price phone I hope you can give me some opinions on this!
@MaartenHeilbron7 жыл бұрын
Wow, you are casting a wide net and considering a lot of factors that might not be very useful in helping you choose - like colour. All cameras have selectable and customizable colour profiles to create exactly the look you want, or by shooting RAW you can make even more adjustments to suit your style and taste. I would suggest you keep shooting with your phone until you realize that it's not doing what you want - and need a larger sensor, better lenses and more control over the settings.
