I’m a retired gallery and publishing photographer who has shot with just about every camera make and format in the film line, to just about every camera in the digital SLR line. Recently I dumped all my big SLR gear, and went shopping around for a sharp, functional, easy to carry camera to take with me on my vacations and shooting around my environment. The Fuji X_E3 is the one! There is nothing I can’t do with this camera, and I’ve used it for technical photography through microscopes and other optical equipment due to the live HDMI output, and street and vacation photos. . It’s such a sweet little camera and a great deal for the quality and versatility! By the way, I love your photography. Nice work, nice review!

Interesting to read your comments, though long after the fact.! As a gallery photographer, do you think this camera would be good for documenting my own artwork, smaller works on paper? If yes, which lens would you most suggest?

Having owned both cameras (plus several Fujifilm bodies over the years) I can say the the x100 series is my favorite camera of all time. When I look back at my portfolio I'm most proud of the photos from my x100 because they "just captured the moment." For me the fixed focal length forces me to prioritize the composition and think outside the box. The x100 has a tactile advantage of being more intuitive than any other camera I have every owned. I hardly ever need to dive into a menu. Buttons, knobs and switches all perfectly placed in an arrangement that becomes second nature. I never shot a lot with flash but the leaf shutter allows for some ridiculous flash sync speeds, allowing you to throw some additional light on a backlit subject with the onboard (or my hot shoe Nissin flash). I shoot more backlit subjects now due to the leaf shutter. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the ND filter. With a simple click of an Fn button I can hit the ND filter and shoot wide open (f/2) in broad daylight. Lastly, the size and design of this camera make it so easy to carry that it's with me everywhere I go. I mean the XE-3 with the 18mm f2 is quite small but the x100f has the edge. Plus the 18mm focal length is a little wide for most purposes. It's not a camera for all but it's perfect for me. Kudos Fujifilm! I'll take this camera to the grave.

Your comment comparing this camera to the X100F - I think you're right but it was a big call and likely the subject of flaming wars on forums, but you manage to communicate it so well! Well done.

Five reasons to subscribe to Mattias Burling: 1. Voice over: I really enjoy your narration. If English is your second language then well done, your inflection is perfect. You are the Werner Herzog of camera reviews! 2. Composition: I love the composition of your photos, your use of light and dark. Also your colour grading is superb - very visually pleasing. 3. Brevity: your reviews don’t outstay their welcome. Concise and to the point. 4. B-roll: you obviously put tonnes of work gathering lots of photos and video to make your reviews super interesting. 5. Information: loads of relevant info presented in easy to understand language. This Fuji XE3 just the latest example... by the end of your review it was all I could do not to pull out my credit card and order the thing! Keep up the great work - you have earned yourself another subscriber (and hopefully many more).

I bought the x100f a month ago. I had the x100t, so knew its limitations, but now I regret the decision and wish I'd gotten the x-E3. I love the ISO dial and built in ND filter, but aside from that, I miss the touch screen and ability to change lenses (I have the adapter lenses which don't change focal length much). Posting this comment for anyone else out there making the decision.

I am also a big fan of the XE series of Fuji cameras and use the X-E3 with the Fuji f2 lenses - 23mm, 35mm and 50mm. Even with those smaller lenses, though, I find the accessory grip and the Lensmate thumb grip improve the handling immeasurably. Especially since the thumb grip keeps you from accidentally activating the Q menu.

I love my XF 18mm, I didn't even know there were haters! I gave my son the 27mm as with the 18 and the 35 f 1:1.4 I rarely used it, even though the tiny form factor makes the camera so pocketable on my X-M1. Now the 18mm lives on the X-M1 body and I use retro glass, or my 55-200 on the X-Pro1.

Hi Mattias, I have recently bought into the Fuji system- five weeks ago- based largely on your channel. I got a mint condition XE2s and XT2 for bargain prices and am really pleased with them. I love the physical controls and to be able to just look down and see my settings, without having to dive into menus to change things. The XT2 reminds me very much of my old Pentax MZ-5 film camera of the late 90s (I think maybe Fuji copied the design!). I only have two lenses at the moment- the 18mm f2 and the 27mm f2.8, but am going to get the 35mm f1.4 too, as I'm a prime shooter. I agree with you about the 18mm- it's a great lens and I love it! Love your channel and keep up the good work! Best wishes.

Sam Hipps About one out of ten pictures would missed focus for no reason even you have the green box and beep confirmation. And it is hard to tell from the back of the screen unless you zoom in 100%. But colors are the best among the xtrans especially if you like the film look of the old Fuji S5 Pro files. Dynamic range is no where as good as the XT2.

For my money the x-pro 1 is the best bang for the buck at about 200 euros. The software updates have made it a much more reliable camera, although not perfect I find it miss very few photos I take of billiards and that's in dimly lit pool halls.

john fragos that was body only and I had to bargain it down to that on a website here in Ireland if you live here have a look, adverts.ie. you can get great deals if you look hard at every website. I saw a ad on eBay just now, at ~210 euros posted with a day left for bids. Good luck finding the camera you want.
@Frank-sd1ph
@Frank-sd1ph 6 жыл бұрын
Coni Glione yeah mines a bit scrached up but I don't care about cosmetics when the price was that good plus it came in the original box. I found that I needed a fast lens for the pool halls I was photographing so I got the 35/1.4. The only f1.4 I saw drop down to the 400 Euro mark, but my grandfathers old yashica 50/1.4 is also great for slower shooting. Those vintage m42 lenses are a nice cheap experience and I like the digital punch in of the "shoot without lens" function. In hindsight the f2 lenses like the 23/2 are great and I can see why they get the glowing reviews. Good to hear the 18mm isn't a dud. For anyone on a tight budget like me nothing comes close in the fuji line of cameras, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to stomach the price increase for the x-pro 2 even if I had the money I think for me it's better spent on fuji's terrific lenses.

Watched it again! Still great! "I wouldn't use this camera for professional sports gigs, and if I'm being honest, I wouldn't even consider mirrorless at all." It's funny how technology changes our perception and how we photograph; ie, EOS R. 20years ago, I never could have imagined what cameras can do today. 30yrs ago, I only looked at lenses and considered cameras to only change very little over time.

I was on the fence about this for a bit but what did it for me was the ability to change lens, it's compact size, and better support. I felt burned by owing the X100T and didn't want to shell out such an investment for the F for fuji to do the same again. With the E3 and the 23mm, 35 and 50 F2 WR it makes for a lovely do it all for what i need it for. From portraits with HSS to street and landscape it's almost a no brainer for me.

I've used the X-E2 for years, it was my favorite camera in combination with the 27mm. When the x-e3 was announced I was SO excited. I literally thought i wouldnt need any other camera in my bag. There's just one thing that is absolutely ruining the entire experience for me. The thumbstick. It's a recipe for disaster, sticks out, will brake easy, let in dirt, dust and moist easy and already sticks since the first two weeks of using it. It's not accurate and sensitive to accidental touches. For this reason only, I still rather shoot with my X-E2. I really, really, really hope that if they ever release an x-e3s they will bring back the regular buttons so I can still have my dream camera.

I purchased this Fujifilm X-E3 three years ago. I still use it nearly every day. At the time, I was getting back into photography and had used some of the earlier digital cameras with low resolution from the early part of the 2000's. I had used Fujifilm so I wanted to stick with the brand. I had no idea how the camera worked, or even if I liked it. I made myself a promise that I would sell it if I did not take to digital photography or would trade up. Well, neither happened. The camera works with most every lens and situation that I throw its way. I have used it with Leica lenses, Rollei, M42 vintage, Voigtlander and others. I will be using this camera until it stops working. At some point, I would like to get a Fujifilm camera that has more vintage film template add-ons, but that is not my priority.

I bought an X-E3 2 months ago before a trip to Japan. I'm in love. It's SO good, i've never enjoyed taking photos more in my life. The 'kit' 18-55mm OIS lens is the best travel lens i have ever used. I was able to get a sharp handheld shot at 1/6th shutter speed because the OIS is that good. It's light, compact, button layout is perfect. The optional hand grip without batteries is a must have. I also have the XF 27mm f/2 pancake and dont let the price deter you, it's a wicked little thing. It is noisy and when you use single point af it hunts sometimes but for $170 (inc $100 cashback from fuji) man, it doesn't get any better. The combo only weighs just 500grams!!!! Find me a Canon L series lens that weighs less than that alone. The ISO scroll is on the front dial if you enable it in the menu. Push it down for apeture, push again for ISO. Rear dial for shutter.

I'm glad to hear that you like the 18 f/2 as well. I don't know why it gets so much hate. I've been wanting to get one mainly for the size. Yeah my XT2 isn't as small as your XE3, but putting the 18mm on would make it compact enough to carry around everyday. The best part? It's a really affordable on the used market. I've seen it around $250.

The 27mm is why I got the similar (diiiirrrt cheap) X-E2 to try fuji. It's a great, practical lens. The XE-2 & 3 would be something if they were a bit smaller and rounded. I can *almost* get it in my pocket... As you say, this would really be something if it were the size of the GR (or my favoriter, Coolpix A).

I bought the GF1 years ago and it was a fantastic combo with the 20mm 1.7. I loved it. But I lost it one night. Only last year I bought another GF1 body again, but it did seem to have aged, my love for it wasn’t quite as pronounced. I think this X-E3 with a pancake or two is a modern equivalent of that GF1, with some big updates to image quality and other nice additions like the viewfinder. Even though Panasonic continue to push things out, this sleek little X-E3, to me, speaks more to the old GF1 than any of the modern Lumix cameras for some reason...

Traded in my X100F some time ago to buy the XE3 and haven’t looked back. Use the XE3 as a 2nd body next to my XT2 or as a stand alone camera for “light” trips/walks. Works best with smaller primes such as the 23 or 35mm lenses, but I also use it with the 56mm 1.2. Would prefer if it had a flip screen instead of a touch screen; other than that, love it.

This is one of the best channels on the web. I have the xpro2 and love it, but to be honest, I rarely use the optical and/or hybrid viewfinder. So when the new mini Medium Format xpro camera comes out, I may buy it if I can afford it and get an Xe3 instead of the xpro2.

excellent review! My beloved x-t20 broke and Fuji wanted $380 to repair it, so I'll be bidding on the x-e3 very soon! the e4 is out, but I don't like how minimalistic it is

I'm on my second! Changed it for the wider 14mm... loved the 16mm but the size and quality of the 18 just kept calling me back so I bought another!

Damian Brown Yeah I had the 16mm. Image quality is absolutely spectacular. But I still kept grabbing for the 18mm as it could always tag along in the pocket when using a longer lens.

Or the XE1 LOL , personally debated over this or the Xpro2 but was able to pick up the Xpro2 for $800 US about 4 months now. Enjoying it. Focusing on using just one or 2 lenses for each time I want to shoot. I was finding with to many lens choices it would actually discourage my shooting. Making a commitment to seeing if I can use one prime lens instead of carrying and changing the 4 lenses and another body Panosonic GX85. Just a exercise that is almost like a challenge for myself. Love your work.

Love your channel and took your advice to pair the Fuji xe3 and the Fuji 27mm. Love it! Had a Fuji x100f and agree with your assessment that xe3 is a better setup vs the x100 due to the lens options. The 27mm fits perfectly, smaller than the x100f and prefer the 27mm focal length over the 23mm.

Got one of those. I actually believe I have the very first one sold in the Netherlands. It’s a fantastic camera, fast, ergonomic, geotagging works perfectly and in real time. I can’t really fault anything. Refreshing to see someone expressing their love for it. All the attention goes to the Ts and the Pros, but this camera is just as capable at half the price. And it’s smaller.

I think the most hated lens is actually the 60mm macro and rightfully so for its abysmal AF. The 27mm is disliked by some mostly for not having an aperture ring when other compact lenses have it and also not having great AF but optically it’s solid.

The Fuji 18mm f2 is extremely sharp! It’s even sharper than the faster focusing 16mm 2.8 I’m contemplating on just selling the 16mm to get my funds back tho the wider end does look nice on architecture but I think I can live with that

great review, great pictures....and that final word about the 18mm f2 is absolutely true! I have compared it to the praised 16mm f1.4 for a very long time now and as an other commentator hereunder said, the 18mm has something special about its colour rendering....

I'm gone willing to buy a x-pro2. My expectations had been triggered by my Zeiss ZM. I tryed the x-pro2 just a few minutes, got aware that this is not a "viewfinder" and bought directly the x-e3. I did not regret. If you want a digital optical viewfinder, there are just two options. Leica or Epson.
