6.2K in 3-2 aspect ratio is one of the most interesting features for me, as many jobs ask for square or vertical. With the extra depth to the picture it would be easier to crop the these formats and keep a decent size resolution, maybe still full HD.

Pros: GREAT resolution output and sensor readout - minimal rolling shutter GREAT port updates especially the full-size HDMI Increased ISO performance (as per Gerald Undone) up to 6400 - Much better than the X-T3/X-T4 AF speed is improved Cons: AF micro-pulsing (mostly in backgrounds) is still visible (saw it in a few videos - one by Matti Hapooja and another by B&H) Stepped exposure shifts while zooming are still there (Gerald pointed that out in his video) IBIS doesn't seem very good/stable. Seems to have those random shifts (mostly horizontal).
@vistek2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jonathan. Yes, ISO performance was excellent. It's something I chose to exclude from my review for length. I knew others would touch upon it. In fact, I was able to shoot at the highest ISOs and get really excellent images using a bit of noise reduction. In my film there are several scenes at 5000 ISO, and we left the grain in because it was subtle and gave a nice texture. I was very impressed! In terms of IBIS - listen, I haven't hidden my distain for IBIS. I generally hate it for all the usual reasons. I ONLY really use it when I'm hand holding a static shot or very subtle movements. It's just simply too herky-jerky for me. In the way that I use IBIS, I was happy with it - even in the moments I forgot to turn it off. Does it still have random shifts? Oh absolutely. But I think we're a long way off from any brand solving this issue (just my opinion, not based on fact).

Sucks that there is no H.264 in 10 bit like on Sony cameras. One of the reasons I got the A7IV. Prores files are too large, and H.265 is too demanding on my computer. I also noticed that faster manual focus pulls seem to be jerky on the XH2S, you see the focus steps and not a totally smooth focus pull. I tried it with the new 33 mm 1.4. How is your experience with this issue? And also - did they fix the jerky auto ISO and white balance? I forgot to try that, but I remember the X-T3 adjusting exposure in video in steps. What are your overall opinions of the XH2S vs the A7IV? How did you like FLOG2, highlight roll-off, the DR and colours versus Sony? Thanks for the review! I agree with you about the AF being good. With my short time with the camera, I was impressed with the tracking. The only downside would be when the subject changes and the camera needs to rapidly change focus to something farther away. Then the pull would struggle a little. But in real life, how often do we do such pulls? I would prefer MF anyways in situations like that. I think this is a phenomenal camera, but I would get annoyed by those few things I described earlier and the Sony seems to just work. Even if it's specs aren't the best anymore.

Hi Adrian, thanks for the comment. There has been a lot of talk about the AF on the X-H2S. Most say that there are micro pulses and it’s not as accurate as Sony. I noticed a micro pulse once in my tests and then never again. I think it was the 50mm lens that was giving me problems. I have a glowing review of the AF because for me, it was great. The AF with the 150-600 really impressed me. But as a cinematographer I’m still only using AF part of the time at best. I don’t think this camera is the best camera for video shooters though. But you get what you pay for. If you want X-H2S power with Sony or Canon you’re paying double.

I feel like this is the most video focused Fuji has ever been. Yeah the recording beep and lack of shutter angle is a downside but as you know Fuji has some features that most of the competition do not have that the competition could simply add. For example to get true 24p or DCI recording in a Sony you need to buy an fx6. Panasonics's full frame line up doesn't have a true 24hz camera up until the s1h which also costs 700 dollars more and has terrible rolling shutter performance (for my case at least since I do shoot out of moving vehicles quite frequently.) Exposure tools can be achieved easily using an external monitor. Shutter angle is probably the easiest out of the bunch to just be added in firmware and Fuji has discussed adding a desqueeze option in the camera in a future update during their interview with cined. While the photography side is impressive you said it best. There is no other camera in this price point that has this amount of dynamic range and this great of a rolling shutter performance and I feel like for indie filmmakers that's what is most important: the image. Great review though. Keep up the good work!

Nice vid as always. But dont you think GH6 does everything xh2s does, plus much more (4k120 at 422 10 bit, anamorphic desqueez, better lcd mechanism, internal fan, etc). And the DR needs to be tested in the real world to see how far that flog2 takes us. I am also not so sure the ibis is effective as in the GH6. Other reviewers complained about the fuji's ibis. yes the GH6 is m43, but it has its advantages...
@vistek2 жыл бұрын
Hi Amal, thanks for the great comment. For the most part, you are not wrong. The GH6 is an impressively powerful camera - as are all M43 cameras (like the OM-1 as I mentioned in the video). That's the most compelling reason to shoot M43 - speed, price, and crop factor (if you shoot wildlife or sports). I also agree that the GH6 is an infinitely better video camera from a functionality POV. Panasonic has been able to leverage their cinema tech into their smaller bodies. Something that FF can't do. Fujifilm is really pushing this camera to be a cinema camera but I personally feel that it's a pro photo camera first with some nice video features. If you're buying a camera only for video - I don't think the X-H2s is the smartest buy on paper. But from a personal POV I can tell you that I've never been a fan of the GH image. I've once owned a GH4 and despite all its bells and whistles, I sold it because I was never happy with the image. With the extended DR of the GH6 it's become considerably more intriguing but it still doesn't feel like an S1H, which I absolutely adore. A lot that goes into buying a camera has to do with just instinct and feel for the brand and the image. So those who love FF will not be detracted by the downsides. I for one, am really looking forward to shooting some video with mine, as I know how I'll work around those limitations. The other compelling reason to choose the X-H2s over the GH6 is that you can get it up to full frame with a speed booster. So all the speed of APS-C (and pretty darn close to M43) with a FF AOV and DOF. That one mod makes for a very compelling argument when you factor in how good the rolling shutter is. For me, I'd just turn IBIS off and never use it. I think it's great for slow shutter/low light hand held photography but I've always disliked the side effects of using it. Anyways, just some thoughts to ponder. ✌🏻

@@vistek many thanks for taking the time with this. My feeling is that XH2S just doesnt geared for video (yet, might change with firmware), with so many features missing. And like with the XH1 the product feels buggy and not complete at launch. I agree with you that in terms of IQ fuji deliver more and outperform the GH6 easily. And that past GH bodies came with bad skin colors. But I feel they have addressed it with the GH6 with far better out-of-the-box colors, and for once, there's a camera that doesnt lack any feature. Personally I love IBIS for statis shots. And where combined with anamorphic lens and desqueez, its a sweet treat. Last, with 0.71 booster and EF cine lens, and GH6 can deliver s35 feel and somehow diminished that digital look even further. I am currently an L mount shooter and so I'm with you on the S1H, its one kf the greatest. But than comes the GH6 with half the weight, better IBIS and better handling. They just throw any conceivable feature on it. Now its these 14 stops DR the XH2S aparently has, that might be a game changer. If indeed its the case its insane. Tnx!

@vistek2 жыл бұрын
Depending on how you use the camera.... yes, some will get that. And yes, there were a couple instances where I also got micro pulses. But I mostly didn't - or if it was happening maybe you could only tell while pixel peeping. My experience in terms of micropulsing with fujifilm is that it's also lens-dependant. Some do it more than others. I don't know if that's actually true ... just my experience. But the camera's ability to lock onto a subject especially in lower light exceeded what my experience is with Sony cameras. I still think Canon has everyone beat in this respect.

Hi Quiroga, AF for video was what I was referring to in my first response. I didn't really do any photography tests with the camera. As you can see, I did take photos - but very casually without paying much attention to performance. So for me, I was really only looking at Continuous Auto Focus and tracking. Some commenters already are saying I was too positive about the camera in my review, but I can only share my personal experience and how I use the camera. So for me, the AF worked wonderfully. Perhaps for others it didn't. I think that's why watching several reviews is always a smart idea.

Different creators use the camera differently, some know what they are doing, others are clueless. Some had the camera longer than others and they all might be using different firmware, so results will vary. What I do is watch all the videos I can pre-release and post-release and compare how I use the camera vs the creators I watched. For example, I’m a video first shooter and I use my camera in a rig, no auto focus, very controlled environment. So to me, the most important features are IQ, DR and rolling shutter performance. The rest of the video features missing from the camera I cover with my rig (monitor, cage, v-mount battery, etc.) For me, this camera works perfectly (my X-T3 is still overkill for what I do), it does everything I need and much much more. In two or three years time, this camera will still be overkill for web content.

Usable AF? So why did Gerald Undone say the AF sucks?
@vistek2 жыл бұрын
A couple reasons - and advanced apologies for a rather long winded answer. But before I launch into it, I want to say that Gerald is probably the best at what he does in all of KZbin land. Gerald is a friend of mine, and I have an immense amount of respect for him. He can do what no other KZbinr can, which is why he is such a success. Ok, with that said - Technical tests are only one part of the story. When I launched into my tirade about critiques where I state "this is how I use a camera, etc etc ... so my experience may be different than others." I don't do a tonne of technical tests where I pixel peep. Why? Because I don't care. I'm not looking for perfection in any camera. I do lots of tests, but I treat the tests like a shoot. I only pay attention to the things that are really really off (like no recording beep, etc). I did notice a few micro pulses from time to time but nothing that really stood out or degraded the image. For me, and how I used the camera - I was beyond content with the AF. But I don't always use AF either. I would use AF half the time. The rest of the time I was using cine lenses and pulling focus. If it isn't evident already, I'm a bit of a black sheep among the KZbin reviewers - in that I'm trying to provide technical reviews of cameras while at the same time, I honestly don't think a lot of the technical details matter as much as others do. When I work in a professional capacity as a DP, I don't even touch the camera. I let me AC do all of that, because I don't care (I mean I do care, but I don't obsess). And I use that analogy because if you're focusing on what you're shooting - subject, lighting, production design, story - but you have an inferior camera, no one will notice the inferior camera. But if you have a technically perfect camera (like the new Alexa 35), and you have no concept of the aforementioned items, then that $100,000 camera can't save you. The only way to know for certain that the AF on the camera is good or bad is for you to test the camera in a way that you like to shoot. Usually brands have events where you can try it, or a money back guarantee before a certain date, or you can rent it first. Lots of options to see if the camera actually works for you. Incredibly long winded, but I hope I brought clarity to my experience and my stance. ✌🏻

When did Gerald become Unquestionable? I didn't see a lot presented to back up his assessment, seemed like he was focused more on the DR than anything else, which was stellar

Why couldn’t the eye resolve beyond 2k? The eyes resolution is vastly higher then 2k and the dynamic range of the eyes is even vastly higher then even the new Alexa, was just waiting for you to state something about that aswell 🤣😆

Your video is great. Realy giving us an idea of the X-H2.... thanks. The last video is awesome. I love motocross..... I know motocross.... so why did you add a 4-stroke sound to a 2-stroke bike? Sory,- but this is bad research to a field, you are not a part of..... better next time. Luv yu

I don’t know what you’re hearing but I didn’t add any sounds. Also, I grew up racing motocross. And I owned both 4 and 2 stroke bikes. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Human eye can't resolve more than 2k is 100% bullshit. Your eye has a distance and color limit (color limit is crazy high though) but not a resolution limit. It's all marketing bs that used to be used to make the new tech seem even more advanced and so after awhile dumb asses started taking it as fact. Once seeing something like 12k constantly and adjusting for it you can notice differences between. Furthermore higher resolution isn't just for sharpenes but when paired with higher color volumes in hdr can reveal a lot more in color depth, shading and contrast if the overall scene brightness can be displayed high enough. If tvs could actually reach 10 thousand nit (which is required to show all the detail in 8k) then a massive difference between 4k and 8k would be even more insane. That's why when you view 1080 or 2k in hdr it's no where near as impressive as 4k when seen at even p3 and 1000 nits or higher (3 to4000 actually brightness required to show all of 4k detail). I did a interview with imax back in college where they explained a lot of this. Which is why when they updated there projector to digital they used laser to get a massive upgrade in brightness roughly 10 times high peak but keep the resolution at 8k (2, 4k projectors) because the extra brightness would reveal detail, sharpenes and colour depth that would match what was perceived on 70mm film but digitally. I saw this first hand after watching tenet in imax digital, imax laser and imax 70mm. It actually looked best on IMAX laser at 8k but was more immersive on 70mm. If a digital 70mm equivalent camera and projector system was made (22k) with the proper amount of required brightness (probably somewhere between 15-25k nits) then it would be like an actual window seeing as that's around what's actually seen in real life on a normal sunny day.

@@vistek it's not true I got my sources from industry engineers and having directed and edited and colored a lot in 2,4, 8 and 12k myself you can definitely tell a difference. Perceived brightness is what's most important.

“The human eye cannot resolve higher than 2k anyway.” Pixel quantity is not the correct measurement for this. The correct measurement is pixel density (pixels per inch). In other words, it depends on the size of the screen that those pixels are picked into, and it also depends on how far away the screen is. Eyesight varies a lot from person to person, and 20/20 eyesight is not perfect, it is just average eyesight. There’s not a scientific consensus on the maximum PPI that a perfect human eye can resolve at, but it’s estimated to be 900 or 1000 PPI, and it’s thought that average human eyesight may be about half of that.
@kites4121 Жыл бұрын
Actually pixel density is a better measurement than pixel quantity, but it is not correct either, because it does not take into account how far away the screen is that you are looking at. The best measurement is Pixel Per Visual Degree, which does take into account how far away the thing is that you’re looking at.

You can buy a $125 external no name monitor that has scopes. The excuse that they can't do it is rubbish.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm no engineer - I'm just the messenger. Big companies like FF, Canon, Nikon, and Sony aren't stupid - they know people want these things but they also know that if they add all the bells and whistles you end up with a camera that is either too expensive and probably too large. My guess is a lot of market research goes into deciding what are the right features worth investing in vs the expected financial gains. FF does want to make an earnest effort to be taken seriously with video, but they don't have the pedigree - so these features will take quite some time. Their entire ecosystem is still very much photo-centric. Again, just the messenger here....

The beep should be easy to add. I hope they do as an option. I am pretty disappointed by the lack of scopes and I don't expect them to add them later. I do think that they tried quite hard in many ways to make it appealing to videographers. And also sacrificed thinks like the shutter wheel which is not so useful for video. Also the ventilation is only for videography. If you were already invested in the Fuji system, would you still choose another hybrid cam for videography?
@nigerian-nightmare2 жыл бұрын
@@vistekI'm glad you commented on the Autofocus; it looks pretty close now to the competitors, according to your findings. Autofocus is a major complaint, mostly with Fuji shooters. However, shutter angle and no beep when you hit the record button are minor issues that can be overcome easily. I cannot imagine anyone skipping on this camera because it has no beep and shutter angle. I'm glad you made clear it is your opinion based on how you shoot. With an external monitor, most of these issues will be eliminated except the shutter angle. Atomos Ninja V has a giant rectangle box in front of the monitor when you hit the record button. You can't miss it. The beep comes only once, but the big red box constantly stares at you. So I'm not saying your complaint is not legit, but it is not enough to say that the camera does not have videographers in mind.

I wholeheartedly disagree with a lot that you've said here. First when touting how good the autofocus is, you show a shot where it is clearly struggling. Second, you call it a photographers camera first. Why would they add prores to a photographers camera, clearly the emphasis is video. Third, knowing when you are recording is completely on you. If you are half the filmmaker you claim to be, you'd know when you are recording. I agree about peaking and proxies, but everything else, i feel like you're crapping on Fuji for trivial reasons.
