2023 and this video is still helpful. X-T1 lacks some of the modern video features but still packs a punch, with a good lens I feel like it almost gives a vintage vibe to the video. I much prefer the XT1 video to my cel phones . Thanks a lot for the video, I’m a hobbyist photographer with no plans to upgrade my XT1 as j think it’s perfect for my photo needs, and this definitely helped me get the most out of it for videos!

Holy shit the footage actually looks pretty good. Which is pretty surprising since everyone including Fuji themselves have said that (before the x-pro2 and x-t2 came out) Fuji cameras were never made for video which is why their video looked pretty bad. But here I am, genuinely surprised at how good the footage from the camera looks! Have you recorded more videos with the Fuji x-t1 that I can check out?
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
Kind of surprising, right? The footage is very usable for sure. You're just limited to a simple set of video features. Although, I forgot to mention a bonus: there's a built in intervalometer which makes timelapses a breeze. If you want to see more footage, this vlog was shot mostly with the X-T1 starting at the time linked here... kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5i1gaZqobF9qpI

@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
I've never tried wiring it up the the camera. That's not really the point of a lavalier. The Rode Smartlav plugs into your smartphone and enables clean audio while being away from the camera. The track is then synced in post production.

I personally wouldnt recommend Fuji anyone who want's to shoot videos from time to time. They are imo unusable (at least for now) because of the fact you can't set the contrast and the whole blacks often eats up the footage. Althoug I read somewhere you can decript the videos after wards, but that is way too much effort for someone who shoots videos on a regular. Perfect for stills tho, cus Fuji is super light weight and feels rly fluent to work with. The video is 0/10 tho for me. Very disapointed

@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all of the tips in this video apply to X-T10- as well. It has the same sensor as the X-T1, so the image quality will be identical. It's all about shooting with a flat film simulation and use manual focus as much as possible. The auto focusing isn't ideal for video.
@PhilChan227 жыл бұрын
Seth K. Hughes hi Seth. How do you focus on yourself when you're vlogging? It would rarely go into focus when I'm on Manuel mode unless I am behind the camera to do the adjustments. Auto mode has been working pretty well for me if when I'm vlogging and in front of the camera.
@DanielKwan7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video. I just found something incredibly frustrating with the X-T1. If I'm using the Fujifilm Cam Remote app (iPhone) to remotely record video, the camera will not use the external mic plugged to the camera. It just uses the built-in mic. But if I record video using the camera without the app, the it uses the external mic as expected. Did you or anyone else encounter this issue also, or is it just me??
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. I've never encountered that because I don't use the app in that way. Bummer. Are you on the latest firmware? It's possible they fixed the bug with the new release that came out May 2017.

@@SethKHughes Your welcome Seth. I have a question if you dont mind since you have much more experience with this camera than I do since I just bought it. But what Gimbal would you recommend for the FUJI XT-1 or the Fuji XT-10? I know that certain gimbals work with certain cameras that you are able to control the camera features from the gimbal controls themselves but I know FUJI is not one of those compatible cameras. Thank you in advance Seth
@SethKHughes4 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, there is gimbal support for the Fujifilm X-T3, X-T4 and X-T30. I talk about this subject in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qomunXmenZx8gNk But the cameras you mentioned are not supported. That said, you don’t need to connect the camera for the gimbal to stabilize it. Therefore any camera may work and it may still be worth it for you.

Hi there, can you explain a bit more how to use the lavalier? I understand that you had both the rode "shotgun" mic on the camera and the the rode lavalier plugged into your cellphone and attached to you...but then I'm lost. Could you share a link to some explanation about synching up the audio from the lavalier mic in post processing? Thanks in advance!
@SethKHughes6 жыл бұрын
That depends on your editing software of choice. Final Cut has syncing features built in while Premiere requires a plugin I believe. If I were you I would just Google it. Should be pretty easy to find the info you're seeking.
@stephaniecosby2276 жыл бұрын
I did some searching and reading (often it's difficult to craft a search question if you're a newbie) and I have one final question - would you ever use just use the rode lavalier as the sole audio source or is the camera mounting microphone in tandem really required for quality. (fuji xt1 camera)
@SethKHughes6 жыл бұрын
Yes, for interviews you could just use a lav mic only. That is standard practice for interviews because there's less chance of picking up other ambient noise. If you're standing within 5-10ft of a shotgun mic (mounted on camera or a pole) and it's connected to your camera it makes the post production easier but theres a greater chance you could get ambient noise.

I plan on making simple videos, documentation purposes mostly, and am very interested in going the Fuji path. I wanna be able to take really good video, like, let's say of a gig at night or a night out with friends. But I also want to be able to take good pictures. I'm struggling between the X-T1 and the X-T20. Assuming I can get them at around the same price with the same 18-55mm lens, which should I go for? What key differences should I know between those two?
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
If it were me I would get the X-T20. It has a better sensor (4k video, 24mp stills), improved autofocus. Just don't get it wet because it's not weather sealed like the X-T1. Also, the X-T1 is a little bit larger and is made of magnesium alloy rather than plastic. If tactile feel and durability is more important than image quality then you will be happier with the X-T1. I recommend getting your hands on them at a camera store to compare how they feel. Enjoy!

Hey Seth. Thanks for the video. I have a question about connecting a Rode mic to Fuji X-T1. You can't connect it directly, as it has a 3,5 mm jack, while Fuji only has a 2,5 mm port. Did you use an adaptor? Does it affect the quality of the sound in any way? Thank you

Just noticed you used the 50-140mm which I'm considering buying. But in addition to WR down to 14F and great photos I need it to record folk singing musicians and pop bands in crowded areas outdoors at Disney at night using this focal range. But while I've seen the great photos I've heard it's "noisy". Restrictions require I can only record video with a good on camera hot-shoe external stereo high quality mic. But I can't find anyone with that experience using this camera with that lens and using an external on camera mic. I'd be recording with external battery grip. Do you have any experience with the lens "noise"? Do you think outdoors with low crowd noise and an excellent stage speaker/sound systems this lens could be used with an external mic up above the back end of the barrel to record say a folk singer in simple C-AF on the X-T2 without the mic picking up any continuous annoying lens noise? Thanks for any thoughts based upon experience anyone can give me.

The image stabilization does constantly hum, however, given the sound system and crowd noise you speak of, I seriously doubt the hum will be detectable.

Hi Seth. Thanks for the video as I will be filming a friends lecture and you have provided valuable hints. As a newbie, maybe you could clear something up for me. In your video you say you like shooting at 24 fps and a 150 shutter speed. But then you say the shutter speed should be 2 times the frame speed. Do you mean: at least at least 2 times the shutter speed since 150 is more than 2X24. Thanks
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, The way I said this came out a bit confusing. What I meant was doubling 24 equals 48 (50 is the closest match). Therefore 1/50 shutter speed. Hope that helps.
@andyonchestnut7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I see my confusion now. You were saying 1/50th and not 150. As I watched you turn the shutter speed dial it wasn't clear you were turning to 50! I did note the lighting you used during your video and thought it had a great effect on illuminating your face. I will be shooting indoors, likely in a classroom. Would you advise similar lighting for best effects? BTW, I did buy the RODE mike via you site and it arrived today. Again thanks. Andy

Nice video, But having the Xe-2 (same sensor) I find it quit poor at capturing dynamic range, even the flatest profile neg std is way to contrasty, and no precontrol on the shadows and highlights unlike Canon. Those older Fuji cameras are great for stills but not so much for video. I would suggest to use a second hand Canon with magic Lantern firmware (it allows shooting raw video, and plenty of other usefull features) for the price.

+jedailprod Thanks for the comment. Yes, these cameras are definitely designed for still photography. The point of the video is to help people who have the XT-1 achieve the best possible video quality within its limitations.

Hi Seth, is there a time limit with this camera when filming? My old camera now can only take videos for 15 minutes, does this one have a limit? Thanks!
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's about 14 mins.
@waxenfelter8 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth, great review. Is the limit based on something like file size? So after 14 minutes you have to stop and start again?
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
Correct. However, this is a non-issue for me because I tend to shoot all my clips under 2 mins.

The main problem with fuji's video is aliasing, but I don't really see any of it here. Is that due to the lens (aperture)? Or did you actually use something to remove aliasing in post?
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
I honestly haven't run into any aliasing issues or had the need to try and remove anything like moire in post. I do however avoid patterns and mostly shoot with a shallow depth of field on the X-T1. That seems to do the trick.

How do you get rid of moire in the video? I heard that there is a lot of moire and false colour in the video.
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
Moire can definitely be an issue. Once you've recorded it, you can't really fix it. My best advice is to avoid shooting scenes with textures and patterns. As for false color, thats not really an issue. However, it would depend on the film simulation that you're using. For example, Velvia renders colors with bold contrast and saturation. For the most accurate rendition go with STD Provia.
@ChairmanZhongXiNa8 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks. I've researched other DSLRs and found out that moire is always a problem, but its just worse on the X-T1.

Would the adapter work on the new TX2?
@SethKHughes8 жыл бұрын
If you're referring to the mic adapter, you don't need one for the X-T2. It comes with the standard 3.5mm jack size.

Can someone here please tell me how to manually set the shutter speed to 1/50 (and not just 1/60 as with the shutter speed knob)?
@SethKHughes5 жыл бұрын
Either set it to 1/60 and turn the thumb command wheel to fine tune increments, or set shutter dial to T for full the whole range of shutter speed control.

Hei, thank you for the tips. I'm using Fuji XT-1 too, mainly for photoshoot. But lately, I'm begin to used it for recording movie too. And I'm dissapointed with the quality of the internal mic. I guess, I must attach external mic for a better result. And I'm considering to buy Fuji ST-1. What do u think? Thanks a lot

Fuji has X-T2 now. Is it worth to pay an extra $300 to get X-T2 or X-T1 should be good enough ?
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
Definitely spring for the X-T2. It's a major upgrade. Better sensor, better autofocus, better video capabilities, the list goes on and on....

Great video! Do you have any recommendations for speed/class/size of SD cards that work well for video with the X-T1?
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
You don't need the latest/fastest SD cards. Anything around 95MB/S is sufficient. Personally I prefer SanDisk Extreme cards like this one... amzn.to/2rV8NJ1 ... because they've never corrupted or failed on me.

So the camera doesn't has a flat profile?
@SethKHughes7 жыл бұрын
There's no FLog or 'Raw' video format if that's what you mean. Otherwise, the profiles I mentioned are relatively flat. They work well enough.
