You can leave the focus dial in “m” and still get autofocus if you use back button autofocus.

One tip, don't put your color setting to -4, but rather higher if you plan to grade. You're shooting in 8bit so you want to have as much color information in the original file as possible. You can always dial it back in post but you cannot bring colors up that the camera doesn't bake in the files. I used to do what you do while back on my 60D till someone explained it to me, the difference is quite big.

Absolutely excellent, no question, the simplified settings are a bonus and will improve switching as well as work flow. One critic, I would just slow it down a smidge, ok before you dismiss, Ive taught and trained, for a company, not on cameras but Diy B&Q from London to the east coast and west. I know you know what your talking about & visa v. But we don’t we are the pupils, we are the dorks that aspire to be you. Your a busy guy, but watch it yourself, which you should have, but when watching it, think 🤔 the guy, you, are talking about oil platforms or different types of wood, no i have it, butchering the way to set up to cut the meat and preparation, the menus the different ways you cut the carcass up. It’s an observation like you directing a model or the lighting, the director knows what he wants but the secret is getting the actor to understand. Great info, look forward to more.

Brilliant! One of the best videos I have seen so far regarding the video settings for the Fuji Xt2 and how to prioritize those settings you would like super quick access to - I have only been shooting video for three years now. I am primarily a still photographer. This coming season will be my fourth year and I really want to push my production value to the next level. My first DSLR video camera was the Canon 70d which I have really enjoyed. I have always shot with Canon's for 35mm work thus I am quite familiar with the menu system. Probably the best feature of the 70d and the one I will miss the most is the ability to simply touch the LCD screen for focusing - made it extremely simple to rack focus between objects when shooting wide open. If they came out with a quality 4k dslr camera I probably would not have left Canon but the Mark IV was very iffy in the eyes of many reviewers. Thus, after quite a bit of research and viewing many samples of the quality of 4k footage the Fuji XT2 is capable of producing, I was sold. Though I must admit I am finding the Fuji menu system to be a bit of a drag as you really have to dig down deep in some cases to find what you are looking for. Your explanation about how to prioritize those functions that you would prefer quick access to has helped me a lot. I am looking forward to getting more time on this camera as my season generally starts to pick up around late April to May. Again, great job, appreciate your efforts, very clear and concise - great work!

TerjeAudio Only tested the 23mm 1.4, 56mm 1.2 and 12mm f2 (samyang) - can highly recommend the samyang for a wide angle. Next on my list is 50-140 and possibly the 18-55 2.8-4 (because of the OIS I think this will be a good all around lens) - thought about the 16-55 but I can probably live without constant 2.8 because I already have the 23 and 56 for low light situation.

I agree with all the other comments - great video. The brief glimpse of the McWhirters building gave it some local context. Just bought an X-T2 (to replace an X-T1) and have started to experiment with video. One thing I struggle with is seeing the difference between HD and 4K, they both look very similar to me. I don't have a 4K display so that makes sense... I think. Am I missing something?

Tony Willis You wont notice it in the camera screen. On a high quality 4K display you absolutely will. I think on the xt2 the difference between 4k and HD is very noticable to me.

Yes I can understand that but I don't have a high quality 4K display and neither does anyone I know. So if I watch any of your other videos e.g. the NZ travel one (which is very good I might add) regardless of which quality I select it all looks very similar. I think here in Oz we're a long way away from 4K as a standard. I know very few people with a 4K TV and no broadcast TV channels are in this standard.

I do alot of Chroma-keying with my X-T2 and this works much better in 4K - much less aggressive parameters are needed in KeyLight 1.2. So the 4K is helping behind the scenes, even if you can't see it on the monitor.

Hey Mitch , thanks for this video it was really helpful. I have a 23mm f1.4 lens , searched all over to figure out why I can't un-grey / unlock the AF mode when in movie mode. It seems to only be usable in MF, while this is a good option I still want to be able to use AF features while recording video. I've tried all settings, focus modes M, C & S , tried the focus ring both clockwise / anti clockwise, some forum said this fixed the issue for someone, still the same greyed out for me though. Is it the lens? Any ideas would be super grateful . thanks!

Whenever I'm filming free hand the movements seems less smooth than on other cameras that I've tried out. Is there a setting for that? Great vid. As someone who is picking up video from a stills background, how to i think about using manual exposure on video.. i.e. how do i pick good/ appropriate aperture / shutter speed combos for video?

Think of it exactly like stills in terms of aperture. With shutter speed, general rule of thumb is that you keep your shutter speed at double or above your fps. So for 24, use 48 or 50. You can go higher, just know that the motion won't look 'natural' (I hardly follow this rule though as my clients can't tell the difference between a technically correct shutter speed and something a lot higher).

Hi Mitch, great video. Have you shot this camera with the 16-55 2.8 lens? Even with the camera set to everything manual, when you zoom with it, the exposure changes in steps during shooting, and it looks terrible. It actually sounds like the aperture is operating during zooming. Any thoughts?

Hmm I don't know Julian. Might be a question for Fuji support (if that's even a thing?) Try upgrading the lens firmware. I used to have this exact problem on my 18-55 2.8-4.0 and firmware upgrade solved it. It was more about flickering exposure during timelapse.

Hey mate, really good video. Came across it, trying to find settings for using the X-T2 to vlog. I tried the Rode micro and it never worked on my camera. I always thought it was because I needed a mic with battery power, but now I wonder if there is an issue with my X-T2?

Maybe you have a faulty cable? I would try it on a different camera and if it doesn't work send it back to RODE. If it does maybe try a different mic and if that doesn't work I would contact Fuji. Maybe just double check your audio levels on the camera are turned up too.

Nice video! I also use -2/-2/-4/-4 highlights/shadows/color/sharpness for video, and I mostly use ProNeg STD to get the flattest image possible. This works for me in general but not for skin tones. You loose gradations, and it is very noticable. What I found is that if you focus on skin tones, you have to get things as close to final in camera as possible. In this case I usually don't touch the highlights/shadows settings, or use -1 if really needed. This is mainly for ProNeg STD, other profiles have more contrast.

Yes they can look acceptable, but if you have time, do the comparison. Expose correctly for the face, with 0/0 shadows/highlights and with -2/-2 too, using proneg std in both cases. Use curves to reapply contrast on the -2/-2 one until it looks like the 0/0 one. Adjust saturation on both to taste, make sure they look similar. Then check the skin tones closely. I'm sure you'll find less gradations in the -2/-2 one, it will be a little bit more flat even though it has the same overall contrast. It's not just me, photographers on various forums have found the same thing, when they used jpeg as output. It's not a huge difference though, you might be fine with the results you get with -2/-2, and I'm sure most clients would not notice a thing.

I think you have to adjust your settings according to the scene. You can certainly use -2/-2 shadows/highlights with high dr landscape shots. Of course it can affect colors like it was mentioned in that thread, but sometimes you don't want that hard clipping. It's a compromise. Also, if -2/-2 does not fill the parade, you might want to switch to -1/-1 or 0/0 instead. You really wanna use all the values you can with 8bit. When it comes to skin tones, it's even better to let the image clip than loosing gradations.

Attila Bakos I am recording video (for fun) and finishing as short film ( for myself) since XT1 times. Here are my thinking and episodes of my filming 1) I used to take 'Fuji Standard' profile and use After Effect/Premier combo to finish. Did 6 films. 2) I used 'ProNegStd' with -2/-2/-4/-4 adjustments and used Premier CC with 'Scopes' to finish film. Did 2 short films. 3) now 'ProNegStd' with saturaton/contrast -2/-2 (all rest 0) and use Pr CC, Resolve & 'ffmpeg' with 'Scopes' to finish film. My first project in progress.

To what level do you set the audio when you use a shotgun microphone on the camera?

Unfortunately every situation and microphone is different. Depending on the type of shotgun mic, the distance the mic is from the source of the sound and the volume of the sound you are recording will all demand a different setting on the camera. My recommendation is to buy the battery grip (with the headphone output jack) and a nice pair of headphones. This will enable you to get the perfect level every time as you can directly hear the input as you are recording. It is almost never a good idea to judge off the camera's audio meter as you can never be sure until you properly hear the signal! I probably should have covered this in the video tbh. Hi @Mitch - I've been having a lot of trouble with frame rate against shutter speed. Generally my motion blur looks either way to stuttery or way too gooey. What shutter speed do you use to get nice looking footage at 24p and 120 fps?

Daniel Rucci I use whatever shutter speed is correct exposure as long as its over double the framerate. I found that achieving ‘natural’ motion blur by messing about with screw in filters more inhibiting than just having choppy footage. My clients don’t notice and I bet neither did you until someone pointed it out. Because I didn’t :)

ever tried to match it to the red? i'm shooting a short movie in 10 days on a Red Scarlet. I also have some car scenes for which I want to use a lighter camera and I'm not sure which one between the gh5, a7s II and xt2 will match better in terms of color.

Federico Tamburini They all have their own look in terms of color. I would say the sony is furthest off. I think the xt2 can be matched well with the red footage.

Hi,there isn't any speed booster from metabones but currently I'm using zhongyi/mitakon lens turbo ii, helps to increase 1 stop plus 0.72(if I'm not mistaken) focal reduce, since all my lens are samyang manual lens, so I'm good with it being a non electronic speed booster,it's been amazing. Also, for you do the math easier, if you shoot at 1080p, just times 1.05 with your lens focal length and times 1.2 for 4k shooting. Hope this helps!

Just push menu and hit the video camera setting and then movie mode and you can see all the different resolutions with frame rates. If you're looking at slowing down footage you need to use 59.94P 1080 and then in post processing like adobe premiere, final cut, iMovie, whatever you can slow down by 75% down to roughly 23p to give you smooth footage. Anymore than that it'll be choppy.

At 100 MBit/s fixed do I get a 4x increase in colour depth when recording in HD vs 4K or does this gamut get lost due to codec restrictions anyways?

Colour depth? Gamut? These have nothing to do with bit rate. I recommend you watch some videos on capture and encoding to learn more. Unless you're producing content for television or the big screen this stuff shouldn't even matter to you anyway. But yes to answer you're question you're going to get a more robust codec in HD because you're trying to squish all that raw data into 2mpix frames vs 8mpix frames with 4k, your logic is correct - there is less data 'lost' in HD. But 100mbits is a great bitrate for both 4K and 1080p (probably even too high/inefficient for HD). You won't notice a drop in quality, artefacting or banding in 4k. Generally above 100mbits the law of diminishing returns really comes into play for 4k footage.

Mitch Lally afaik. The codec determines how the bits available per second are used to compress colour for each available pixel, for each frame and across frames. There is also the topic of chroma resolution, which probably is limited in the Fuji's codec profile. Since h.264 is less designed for editing but rather playback, I was really wondering if there is a noticeable advantage for color grading at 100mbit/s in HD vs 4K. Eg. not sure if pixelated "reds" would be fixed with this relatively high Bitrate or if that is mainly caused by chroma compression. Sorry, didn't want to get too technical with my first question.

I just got my Zhiyun Crane today! I will make a video on it eventually. I would probably stay with MF unless my subject is going to stay in the same part of the frame. I've shot on the glidecam for years and I just do the trick where I try to stay the same distance from the subject throughout the shot so the focus does not change. Will be keen to try AF with the crane though!

Mitch, I got a question for ya. Have you noticed constant auto focus hunting while shooting video with your xt2? I've found that in many cases this issue is so significant that a lot of the footage I get with it is useless. Similarly, auto iso adjusts so poorly and noticeably that it also renders footage useless. Many times I shoot full manual if the environment allows and in that case the results are phenomenal. But I also like to utilize amy gimbal as much as possible but am now always hesitant to do so because I know I will just end up with poor content. If you've noticed similar issues and if so do you have a fix? if not, how have you not switched back to canon yet?! lol

I think it depends on the lens you are using with the hunting issue to some extent. Plus, I make sure I always have the focus box over an area with lots of contrast and not on the edge of people's faces. I am currently editing a film that I shot in New Zealand that is about 95% auto focus and the lens I used most of the time was the 18-55 2.8-4 and the results were amazing - no visible hunting. I've also shot interviews and no issues. I wouldn't use AF on a gimbal. I would use manual focus for best results as its hard to keep the focus point on the subject. The lens I use on my crane is the 12mm samyang which is fully manual and I usually set it to f5.6 to increase my DOF.

Thanks for the reply! Thats all very helpful. I experimented more with the AF-C in 4k yesterday and realized its not as bad as I thought. My issue is that I was shooting in 1080 with face detect on. I think the face detect was causing the hunting because with that off the AFC is more reminiscent of the canons i am used to. So i am pretty relieved. I also have the 12mm lens. Will definitely give it a go with the smaller aperture on the gimbal next time. How do you set focus when you use yours? Since its such a wide lens are you mostly able to set it and forget it by using the smaller aperture or do you occasionally adjust on the fly? Again, thanks for the help!

Yeah use AF-C - I never used face track before. Yeah I adjust the focus on the 12mm as I go. For the most part for tracking shots I'm trying to keep the subject the same distance from the camera throughout the shot. A wider aperture with the 12mm means you have quite a large DOF so even if you get a little closer or further during the shot you should still be in focus. That's how I used to shoot on my 5D/glidecam because I never used AF in video before the XT2

Mitch, you are the man as usual. I’m a street photographer and have my stills setting always on continuous high. If I decide to switch to video on the fly via a button, like I can on my Nikon, can I and is there anyway to assign the movie button so I don’t have to take circa 6 seconds to look down and rotate the lever under the dial.

Sorry I use Set 1 Multi-Purpose mode. Default settings. I honestly have not played with it too much but I've seen others test it. Multi-purpose seems the best for general shooting.

Thanks Ivan. It depends what you're shooting with it. If you're a stills shooter and want a camera for both I would have to recommend the fuji though.

Im not as professional as you as a videographer or photographer but I do know audio. As a podcaster and broadcaster, I really would say that for your audio it would be best to record the audio separate from the video. Instead of putting a mic on the camera, put a portable recorder on the top with the mic plugged into that. You could get away with a Zoom H1 or H1n. which would add nearly no more weight to the camera. Then you would have pro sound to go with your pro video.

Fighting Arts of England Onboard mics for me are reference audio for syncing to external sources in post - would never use it as a primary source for dialogue. When it comes to audio, proximity to the source should always be the priority. If you place a bad mic / recorder close to the subject it will always sound better than a great mic / recorder thats too far away.

Mitch I followed your instructions in an attempt to set the front dial to control ISO and was unsuccessful. Whenever I push the front button in after changing the menu setting to command I am not given an option to select ISO. Also, how do you set the rear wheel to control shutter speed?

John Gilbert you need to set the ISO dial on top of the camera to A before it will work. It is set to control shutter speed as normal. There is a submenu called ‘command dial setting’. Its hard for me to check because I upgraded to the XT3 now and the menu is slightly different...

@@MitchLally Thanks for replying. Well I finally got it set up. Please consider doing a video on how to. I am just now getting into video and I bit sure what settings to use. I did one video and processed it in Movie Studio 13. Maybe I didn't save it right but the video played like it was constantly focusing. There were wavy lines in it.
