This is hands down the best instructional video available for the XT3. No fluf or over produced ego tripping, just packed full of good clear precise information. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Excellent work and I agree with the other comments, Fuji should employ you to make there instructional videos :)

Never judge a book by its cover!!! Mr. Heilbron, let me begin by saying that I did judge the first few seconds of your video (mainly the lighting) so much that I almost didn’t continue watching, and that would have been VERY UNFORTUNATE, because this is by far one of the MOST EDUCATIONAL and KNOWLEDGEABLE videos I’ve ever watched, not just about the X-T3 but also about video and first steps into a more advanced path with color grading and such. Please forgive me for misjudging your video and accept my gratitude. A few highlights: - i watched dozens of videos about the X-T3 and they all say “you can’t lock your exposure settings in video mode in case you have to switch to stills for a couple of shots” You showed otherwise! Very important feature specially for someone like myself that have to do that in the middle of shooting. Your explanation of focus peaking and zebra was priceless. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I was sad at the end of your video for 2 reasons: 1- i wish it never ended. And 2 - there are more people like myself out there and you only have 35k Views and 78k subscribers meanwhile a bunch of “know NOTHING” out there are breaking the 1 mil subscribers. I am just a huge fan of yours now and just too passionate about your video!!! Thank you

This is honestly the most concise video of this nature that I have seen, and as questions pop up in my mind you dismiss them in the next moment. I don't have the camera yet but am considering switching, and I'm watching every video I can to make sure I don't make a mistake as I really do love my Nikon d750. Your clip has been incredibly insightful on all the most valuable video aspects - specifically the ease of use for focus assistance and the 48 shutter settings. These are things very few other people cover, they are all just stuck on the film simulations...which are great...but I needed more than that. Honestly remarkable. Humblest Thanks.

Fuji I LOVE your flip SCREEN concept! They have in my opinion the best flip screen arrangement on the marked. Makes high/low photo a breeze compared to the Panny/Oly/Canon idea where you have to flip it all the way out before rotating etc which makes you miss the moment. 100% cudos to Fuji here. This vlogging-thingy is just for a few users compared to the large amount of photographers out there.

Great show, Maarten. You hit on all the salient points when it comes to shooting video with the XT-3 and video in general, some of which I had to learn the hard way (such as how to get to exposure settings that fall between the manual dial settings, for example). Quite frankly this is the best video pertaining to the Fuji X-T3 on KZbin. Wishing now that I had a similar video for the Sony PXW-FS7 the first time I rented one. Thank you so much for this - it released a tremendous amount of stress - I am buying the camera tomorrow for documentary filmmaking and the occasional sojourn into stills photography. If this has already been addressed elsewhere online i am not sure, but with respect to overheating issues (if you don't mind), I have a two-part question: i) When recording with an Atomos externally, is there a substantial reduction in the risk of overheating? ii) Does anyone have any controlled data on overheating times on the Fuji X-T3 while using an external recorder at various settings, so as to be safe?
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. I would not be overly worried about overheating for the X-T3, unless you are recording in a hot environment (and in that case, any camera will be challenged). There is a reduction in the risk, but again, with high external temperatures this risk is not eliminated. I have not seen these kinds of controlled tests, and as each situation is different, they can't really be applied to real world. I can't find any reports of videographers complaining about overheating. If I were you I'd put these issues to rest.

@@MaartenHeilbron Brilliant rundown on the X-T3 you pointed me to Maarten. So much helpful info. Example: how to use the Wide Focus re 'set focus point to where item enters the screen'. It is hard to find that sort of knowledge. Would be wonderful to see you do more like that? Another Question: Lots of Shutter choices ... what to use? When? How to minimize changes? Thanks.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the kind words. I do my best to be honest and detailed. For shutter, use the mechanical shutter unless you have a specific need. I'll think about that as a topic, as more cameras are adding this kind of control, but the reasons to use alternate shutter modes silence the shutter, speed the shutter) are few and finding situations to demonstrate the impact and effects are hard to find.
@donsylvester5275
@donsylvester5275 6 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron Thx for direction on shutter. Will go MS only right now. Confusing because I want camera to choose best for situation ... but it actually doesn't. Seems the Sports Finder will only actuate if on MS? The shutter choices and operational consequences are not clear; setting to all 3 with idea of "let camera make best choice" negates at least that function ... not intuitive. Thx Maarten ... you're a big help to ordinary folks like me.
@MaartenHeilbron

Killer stuff sir! Just got my new XT3 and 10 bit internal f-log results are insane. Can you pls go a little more on the when-to and when-not-to go for f-log and the dynamic range redistribution.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 5 жыл бұрын
It's simple - don't use F-log unless the dynamic range is more than 8 stops. If it is, first try to fix that, and if it absolutely can't be fixed, use F-Log. Either way, you will have to reduce the dynamic range in editing to about 8 stops, as nearly all displays (for now anyway) support an 8 (or so) bit range. The (partial) solution is to use HLG, so that the displays that do support it can take advantage of the higher dynamic range.
@rajneessingh222
@rajneessingh222 5 жыл бұрын
@@MaartenHeilbron display shouldn't be a problem, coz I've an Eizo 10 bit grading monitor...what I'm looking for is good dynamic range in images and the log results (after grading) almost always beats the eterna results. Also, the 10-12 bit footages definitely do look better even on 8 bit screens. So I just don't see why I shouldn't be shooting log all the time.

One thing I have not been able to determine from any XT3 review video is when using an external recorder (Atomos) can you confirm two things. When filming video in 4K DCI 60P, does it still crop in the sensor when sending over HDMI to the Atomos? Also, what is the maximum bitrate and supported codec when sending 4K DCI 60P over HDMI to the Atomos? Keep up the great reviews!

Thanks Maarten, I enjoyed the fast pace that your video provided. I'm am experienced stills shooter wanting to do more video so I was able to keep up with your settings instantly. It's interesting that many reviewers of the X-T3 rave about the video capabilities (quite rightly) but give us the impression that we should be shooting this camera at warp speed, but in the real world these are not necessarily the best settings for many of us, even the pros. I have spent hours researching gimbals for the X-T3 Fuji cameras and am keen on the Moza Air 2 but the weight of this gimbal negates the reasons why I switched to mirrorless? For the moment I am not going to use an external recorder so require the X-T3 screen free of motor mechanisms. I would appreciate your input on this? Yes of course I subscribed. :)
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, and your subscription, appreciated. I agree, if you're producing for youtube or other online distribution, the X-T3's high end settings are more than what's needed (and fill up memory cards super fast!) I'm not sure what your question might be ... what is "screen free of motor mechanisms"? The Moza Air (or the Ronin-S, which I would recommend) are indeed heavier devices, but they provide functionality that no stills/video hybrid can match. If that's what you need, it's much, much lighter than the steadicam rigs that they replace.

Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. I would produce at 1080/25. Most capable NLEs will conform the larger res to the smaller for output. Remember that because you can zoom the 4K clip to 200% without loss of quality, enabling you to zoom and pan on that footage. If you do need final output as 4K, and you can arrange to reshoot, then that is also an option.

Many thanks for helpful video. I have a couple of questions/things I would like to cross check-clarify. Could you please advise why 17:9 is better than 16:9 and your the choice of 24p over 23.98p when setting for movie production? Also when you mention zebra usage, I understand it indicates blown highlights/over 100 on waveform/, then just to clarify, you say its good to set at 70% to see good indication for skin tones - then you set at 11.08 iso higher, loosing more details in skin on your talent. I do not have much previous experience working with zebra, how do you properly expose for skin tone with zebra? Is it best not to see any blown areas or some or what are your thoughts on that? Many thanks for your answer and high quality videos. I always learn new useful info and it helps alot. I appreciate your kind words. The aspect ration for most cinema production is 17x9. 16x9 is used for video/TV as that's the standard 4K resolution of TV screens. Film standardized on 24 frames per second, and if your production is to be displayed in a cinema environment, where the projector displays 24 frames per second, that should be your preference to minimize processing and lost or added frames. You should aim to expose the skin of an average light skinned person at 70 percent. To do that, set the zebra for 70, and set the exposure so the the skin is showing stripes. That however should be set in conjunction with the overall exposure, which, if you're producing for broadcast, is very fussy about 100%. There's no harm in blowing out highlights, if that serves the production, however, it should still be clipped (possibly in post if required) to 100 IRE units on a waveform. I don't usually explain, as I feel that the viewers for whom these videos are designed just want to get on with their production. Hope this helps.

That said, I would love to learn more - hear more about the things regarding filmmaking, things like right way to expose with zebras for skintone /you explained/ or other useful things as standard formats, etc. I know this can be googled/learnt on other channels - or in other ways, but just a thought for you, if in the future you would consider making a series or some videos that would cover useful things for filmmaking - just a thought and suggestion that I would and maybe more people love to hear more on those topics from you.
