Man, your XT3 footage in the talking parts looks a lot better than the Panasonic footage. I've seen this before with someone reviewing the X-H1. They were doing the talking parts on their Panasonic GH5, and then showing clips of the X-H1 throughout the video. Every clip of the Fuji was strikingly better than the Panasonic. Color and image is why I switched. Thank goodness I don't have to go back to Sony Zombieland.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
You think so? I'm still a bit partial to the GH5's look. Obviously you like a vivid image, because Fuji has that in spades. I like both, but I've always liked the smooth, cinematic look of the GH5. The Fuji is really nice for punchy portraits and outdoor details though.
@avarmadillo6 жыл бұрын
Yup. I think so. And it's not the vividness. It's the color, the texture of the skin, the beautiful smooth and gradual roll off--all of it combining to compliment the person's face. And there's something "off" about the face color and texture of the look of the GH5. I never liked it--better than Sony, but, sorry. No cigar. That's why I kept looking. The colors of the Pani in comparison to the Fuji seem a bit dead and lifeless. Yes, in general the Fuji colors pop. But that's not it. Sony colors can pop--and I wish they wouldn't. There's something really special about the Fuji look--something Je ne sais qua. And I'm not alone in seeing that. Just look at the footage on DP Review where Jordan reviews the X-T3. It's all shot on the X-T3, and it looks gorgeous. It's not the vividness, or the punch portraits,or outdoor details. It's the artist's eye applied to the science of color. You can see it in Canon and Nikon too. Most else looks clinical and unnatural to some degree. But I will say I saw a real improvement in the GH5s---but try as I may, I just could never live with the MFT sensor--and I tried!
@PeterMKent6 жыл бұрын
@@avarmadillo The GH5 colors push a bit to yellow and green, you can see it easiest with skin tones and green plants. The GH5S looks better but still pushes a little too magenta for my tastes; I agree that the out of camera colors from the Fujis are more pleasing. Judging from the comparison footage I've seen, GH5 video still looks sharper than XT3 footage but some people prefer a softer look.

Thanks for confirming Fuji is still using a 4GB file limit. I sync long takes from 3 angles so that's important information to me and has been hard to come by. The XT3 has the best out of camera colors I've seen but I'm sticking with the GH5 until they remove recording limits with unlimited file sizes, improve IBIS and are proven to be more stable (XT2 and XH1 had some freezing issues). I'm hoping the XH2 gives us all this at a competitive price and soon.

Let me nitpick further, they should have given Pagani or a Bugatti instead of a Ferrari. Anyhoo, great review man. Not getting this but Fuji is getting really serious about their hybrid ambitions and I might get one next year or the XH2. Fujinon glasses are awesome and the line up is huge. I use the GH5 & GH5S, so yea I'm used to bad AF. GH5 thought me how to master Manual focus as a one man crew at times. Sometimes having a reliable AF helps, especially in the wedding industry. About commercials, it's manual focus. I've always been an admirer of Fuji colours, my dad a professional hobbyist uses Fuji XT2. I'm sure he'll get this and I'm pretty sure IL get that from him. Cheers mate.

@ThePhotographyHobbyist6 жыл бұрын
I love what Fuji is doing and how they treat their customers, but I honestly just don't like the 'retro' styled bodies as much as a body on something like the GH5 or G9 (Panasonic). I've never used the X-H1 (I had an X-T1 & 2 and a few X100's in the past)...so I would probably prefer the X-H1. Although, I still think the X-H1 is a little too hampered compared to a G9 body with regard to ergonomics and customization. The G9 and GH5 bodies are near perfect for quick changes to exposure comp and aperture in aperture priority with how I have the dials configured. Everything is right at my fingertips on my right hand.
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm with you on that. I get it when people say they love the look of the Fuji. I can totally see why they would, but for me personally I'd rather have modern dials and aesthetics. I find the ergonomics of my GH5 superior for sure. But it's all a matter of taste I presume.
@ThePhotographyHobbyist6 жыл бұрын
Gerald Undone The problem is, everything else about the Fujis is so tempting. I love all the little details like the modern/classy menu system, the font and details in the EVF and how the info changes when you rotate the camera, etc, etc. If money was no issue, I'd have an X-Pro 2, X-H1 and plenty of Fuji lenses too because their lenses are just sexy too :-) But being more practical, I really don't need another camera right now (have a G9 and a7R3). I'm really curious about that Panasonic full frame rumor though. If Panasonic were to make a FF G9 with a great sensor similar to the a73, oh my! Panasonic probably does more right than most brands right now but that much smaller 4/3 sensor has been what kept a lot of people from converting to a Panasonic system.

Myself I failed to get smooth gimbal shots with the X-T2 except with very wide lenses. It just didn’t quite make it without any internal stabilizing to round off the small shaking. Even after being pushed in a wheelchair inside I needed to stabilize in editing. So I don’t know if this would be a good gimbal contender. There are of course better gimbal operators than me out there than me. I solved my problem by keeping the camera, selling the gimbal and sticking to tripods. Anyway, very informative video, thanks! I think I will upgrade to this.

Hey Gerald, thankyou for the review. Im a Fuji owner with an Xt1 and two XT2's I had never been that concerned about video until recently when I wanted to start making my own short videos. It instantly became apparent that the XT1 was next to useless. The Xt2's were ok but I got a sever dose of Camera envy when my mate showed me the Northern Lights video from his Sony A9. Its good to hear that you rate the XT3 for video, and this review may mean I buy an xt3 at some point soon. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on a comparison between the sony a9 and the fuji xt3 for video ? Which should I buy ?
@geraldundone6 жыл бұрын
Honestly, bang for buck the X-T3 crushes the a9. There's benefits to both, but the X-T3 packs just so much into its package it's an easy pick. The a9 beats it at sports shooting for sure, but for video it's X-T3 all the way.

That's really remarkable and amazing! 🤓 Now, one little question: I see a lot of video oriented talk about the XT-3 body but almost no one talks what Fuji lenses do well in video. I've been reading a lot of different stuff about poor performance lenses in video and that all of them are great, so since I don't know how the world of Fuji works and I really want to join the x-t3 boat, would be awesome if you could cover that a little :D

Thanks a lot! Appreciate your kind words. I'm not an expert on Fuji lenses, but I know what you mean. the XT-3 is definitely a great option right now, I'm more of a FF fan, but considering that fact that the Panasonic S1 will be available in 6 months, I'm considering moving to Fuji. I'm also considering the Sony A7III, but the 4K60 on this one makes me want this one more, and probably Sony's A7sIII will be twice the price as this one. It's quiet a hard decision now a days to select a camera with so many great options available, I think Canon and Nikon missed a big opportunity with their EOS R and Z cameras, too bad, but then again, better for us to have other options available.

Wonderful review!! Thanks for staying video focused. I’ve really been loving your videos, honesty and overall attitude. Quick question regarding shutter, does the XT-3 have a shutter angle option with something similar to GH5’s ‘synchro scan’ to address using mixed lighting and flickering light sources?

Thanks for the kind words! I wasn't able to find any settings for shutter angle, so I think you'll be stuck using the standard stops. It does have flicker reduction, but that's more of a stills feature.

If you are looking exclusiverly for a film camera, I fail to see why this camera would be better than the soon to be out BMC 4K?

I wear a Fuji euro-man-thong ever since I bought an XT3 bcuz aren't you supposed to become a fanboy of whatever new camera you buy? 😁

Different strokes. I'd rather have the X-H1 with 2.0 firmware than the X-T3, hands down. For video, the X-T3 is not a little body, it's a teeny-tiny body with a great big gimbal or stabilizer or tripod. Fine for the video-centric among us but not for utility photographers who need a light mobile video solution. Hm, I'm shooting with GoPro Hero 7 Black. Maybe I should learn how to pimp GoPro video to the max and just get the T3.

The big question is...with the firmware update allowing the X-t2 the capability to record raw in cam and 4k60...is it worth the upgrade to the x-t3. I'm not sure it is, and will wait till X-h2 comes out. UNLESS, (question) and possibly one of my biggest gripes with the X-t2, when using the battery grip, the camera drains one battery at a time, and when one battery runs out of juice the recording stops. It's awful and by far one of my least favorite things about the camera. Do you know if that has been fixed in the X-t3??? Great vid btw!

Thanks for your comment, Brett! 😃 Yes, the battery switching thing has been fixed. It will not stop recording when switching batteries anymore. 👍 However, I don't think there is upcoming firmware that adds 4K60 to the X-T2. I could be mistaken, but I haven't seen that anywhere.

That's great news, and you're RIGHT! I just assumed that last big 4.1 update included it since it added F-log to Internal and the 1080 @120. It must have been wishful thinking!

Great video, Gerald. This is the first time for me in your channel. I am much more interested in pictures than video production, but I have to shoot some vids every now and then. Anyway, you caught my attention, and will follow you. I like how articulate and understandable you are, even for a non "video geek" :) Good luck with your channel !

One thing you did not mention and I don’t blame you because no one else mentions it including Fujifilm, and that is the optional battery hand grip allows the use of three batteries! Two in the grip and one in the camera. I don’t know of any other handgrip that does that. You did mention that an AC power plug comes with it that charges the two batteries in the grip, but I think it charges all three batteries and powers the cameras as long as it is plugged in. Which is awesome for corporate interview duty like I do. And one other feature that nobody mentions, the audio is really good! It records in 48 kHz 24 bit depth which is better than 16 bit like many pro video cameras. I’m a sound mixer and use a Sound Devices MixPre-D screwed under the T3 for recording direct to camera audio. I used to do that with the Canon 5D mkII and it produced OK sound but this T3 sounds so much better. I actually do single system sound for Corp interview gigs unless they are willing pay for double system and post to sync it.

Hey, i want to buy a XT-3 for shooting musicvideos which lenses would you recommend me to get? Except the 23mm. Under 1000€. Thank you!

and in just over 1 year we have ZV1.. no company can make me invest in a camera over $1000 nowadays.

Another question!!!!! Would you recommend the XT3 or the XT4 over a full frame camera? For example the Canon R or Sony a III or the LUMIX S1
@cloud9photography1264 жыл бұрын
why does the xt3 have such harsh exposure changes when in aperture priority mode...i cant even video a sunset to speed it up later in post like i do with my sony A7rii without it flashing so badly as the sun set and the light got progressively dimmer....i was using the 16mm f1.4

Another helpful video! One of my biggest areas of ignorance is color correcting and grading. I would love to see you teach about this topic if you are inclined. Things I don't understand: The "Log" profile - what is it and why is it supposed to be so great? What is Cine-D and Cine-V (in my Panasonic camera - I'm guessing others have it too), and why are they desirable versus, say, a "vivid" profile or the Log profile? Why do people want "flat" video that they can "grade?" Why not just get it out of the camera as close as possible to what you want, and then use post production just for minor tweaks? Why isn't it as common to have "raw" video as it is to have "raw" still photos, to offer a wider range of correction before unwanted artifacts start appearing? I know you have a video about color science, which is related, and maybe some questions are answered there, but overall I think these are different questions and a different general topic. Anyway, I think that would really be helpful for a lot of people because it would help us pick what color profile to shoot with and have an idea of how much work we will have in post. Thanks!
