Chris, I think that like many others I was waiting for your verdict on the autofocus update and I truly believe that it’s a measure of the respect and trust you have earned through the channel. In my case it’s enough to persuade me to trade my X-T4 for the X-T5. Thank you for all your hard work and enthusiasm.

What known features will you LOSE from the X-T4 as you swap to the X-T5?
@robowen3450 Жыл бұрын
@@chaddonal4331 I have carried out a huge amount of research from a variety of sources before upgrading. As I see it the two main changes that I will notice are the change of screen from flippy to tilt and the file size for raw images. With regards to the screen I was attracted to the X-T4 screen as I liked the ability to turn it in on itself for protection. I never shoot video of myself and a screen protector will deal with protection. In terms of file size I will be shooting raw to slot 1 and jpeg to to slot 2. I'm not that much into editing as I like the jpeg outputs and the raw files are only there as a backup should I feel the occasional need to edit any jpeg that isn't up to scratch. If in the future I switch to mainly raw shooting I will get some additional storage on my Mac probably by way of a Synology Nas.
@pal2tech Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob! As an XT4 owner, just remember that you won't have the flip around screen any longer. For me that was a HUGE deal. Others, it doesn't matter much. Also, file sizes of JPEG/RAW will obviously be larger due to the larger resolution. For me, I consider storage space worth it. Lastly, remember that the buffer is a bit slower because of the larger RAWs and readout speeds. I go over this in the XT5 review, but wanted to also point that out.
@pal2tech Жыл бұрын
flip around screen is the big one. Also, buffer on XT5 fills up faster because of larger RAW files jamming the readout speeds, etc.

@@pal2tech Thanks for replying Chris. I had already considered the issue of the screen and raw file size and covered them in an earlier reply to another viewer, I guess it crossed with your reply. I'm a Pentaxian about to switch to a mirrorless system. I'm considering the X-H2 and the autofocus from the initial reviews had me on the fence. I was worried the gap to Sony would be too big. But now I'm pretty much confident, even if it's not up to the exact same standard, it's good enough by a wide margin not to be worried. Now it's time to wait for a good deal!

I can tell you that this update makes the XH2 a formidable camera. The update made a huge difference in my non native Tamron 150-500 lens. The 18 55mm 16 80mm and the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 lens were stellar before the update but now are superior in acquisition of focus. For some reason I got a lens error a few days after the update. I reset the camera and the lens error went away, but it kept asking me to turn off the camera and restart it. The camera is 6 months old so I dropped it off at Fujifilm in New Jersey Thursday. Get a warranty because it seems to happen to some Fujifilm cameras for some strange reason. The camera was never dropped or mishandled, but while shooting it gave the lens error.

Been waiting for one of these vids re: the new FW. Thank you. I moved to Sony for my professional work, and slimmed down my Fuji gear to the point of selling all my X gear, and just keeping my GFX 50R. Sadly Sony has got me to the point where I now know what it is like to be truly confident in an AF-C tracking system and it's tricky going back. The 50R I just stick in AF-S and largely stick to landscape work. This update looks like a big step in the right direction. I think I'll be going back to scratch my Fuji itch when the next x-pro comes out, and the current state of AF seems good enough for family captures (a fast-moving toddler) which is encouraging as a fan of the brand.

I thought the pictures of the kids that you stated as in focus looked still off. It made me realise that whilst I love the Fuji colours and look you get, the autofocus is so way behind Sony. Even if I upgraded to the xt5 I’d still end up favouring the a7iv and it would be a waste of money. If all I did was like street photography or landscapes I’d happily upgrade. Yes it’s way better than the xt3 but still got a lot of catching up on Sony autofocus

Hi Chris, great video as usual. If I m not wrong, your xt5 new firmware update compares to our 3.0 (for x-h2s). With that, on my x-h2s, I did notice some improvements on the face recognition and with animals reflections in water: the focus tends to be more stickier on the actual animal rather than its reflection, although this is not completely fixed. However, I m very disappointed about the bird/animal detection mode. I always see that green square in my camera viewfinder, but the focus is most of the time right behind the subject! And yes, you are right: the insect autofocus is more a tracking system when the insect is on the flower. There is no way you can catch a flying bumblebee or a dragonfly with this camera! Thanks!
@aj-zk1wx Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you. I have the X-H2S and I struggle with the same false positive auto focus locks, especially with subject detection tracking. If you read the 2.0 firmware notes, it included this fix... "The bug has been fixed, which caused that the focal point of a lens was sometimes behind the subject when shooting the small object by selecting “SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING”. And then we had the big 3.0 firmware update (appears the same as the X-T5's and X-H2's AF improvements). I'm very disappointed to still be having these issues, and I hope Fuji can make additional improvements via firmware.

The camera autofocus is not good enough to catch flying birds, and that s ok cause good cameras for that are around 7k...but with this camera you can't even catch the steady animal! I shot all day with the XT5 in Italy today. I was ready to trash this thing before the 2.0 update. Since the update, I’ve nailed wayyy more shots than previously. Today, even in a moving boat in choppy water, it had no trouble tracking and focusing on seagulls or anything else I pointed it at. It’s still not as reliable as my R6mkII but it’s much closer now. My only gripe is that the exposure compensation dial is way too easy to accidentally adjust with a simple bump or even just slinging it across my chest. Thanks for the video. Love your channel.

Excellent XT5/FMv2.0 review. Glad Piper is doing well! My take: AF-C is definitely improved. I tested it out at two polo matches last weekend after updating to FW 2.0. The scene was a high goal polo match. High goal refers to experienced/skilled players on fit horses, often re-trained race horses, where the speed of the game is fast. A galloping horse can easily maintain 25-30mph (40-50kph). This provides a reasonable test for the AF-C. I used Fuji’s 100-400 and 70-300. I used Provia, AF-C, CL (7fps), Wide/Tracking, Custom Setting 6 (4/2/Front), and focus priority. I have AF+MF turned off. My observations. I tried subject detection off and subject detection on (face/eye and animal). • When subject detection was off the burst rate was high and consistent - in line with the 7fps set. With subject tracking (face/eye or animal) on, focus locked on to a rider (eye focus) well when the action was close, but less reliable when the action was further away, which is to be expected. • With animal subject focus on, focus was more reliable in this scenario on the horse’s head, but I put this down to a larger, more defined target rather than animal detection being inherently better than human face detection. • However, with face/eye and animal detection on, after about 2-3 images, the burst rate slowed noticeably. I do not know why, but my hunch is that the computing power needed for eye/animal detection is a far heavier effort so to maintain focus the frame rate slows. On the other hand, with subject tracking off, the burst rate was maintained. Both settings seemed to give accurate focus once locked on; it is just the burst rate that seems to be affected. In future for sport, I will not use face/eye or animal detection. Of the 448 images taken during the first match, I discarded only 18 for being out of focus, either because the focus point was on a horse behind the target or because it focused on the background due to user error. For me, the XT5 with FW2.0 in AF-C is good enough.

Thanks for reporting your experience. Unfortunately, my experience with the new firmware and birds in flight is that the performance is more or less unchanged. I still get a good number of "false positives" (this is the aspect that annoys me the most). Hard to compare because these tests are as un-scientific and un-repeatable as they can be, as you also correctly point out. Still, I noticed no improvement in my use case. Subject detection performance relies largely on subject size and background separation, and this has not changed at all for me. I get a good number of in-focus shots when the bird is against blue sky, and an equally good number of wasted shots when there are trees behind it, unless they are a lot farther away than the bird. BTW, locking on erratically moving subjects works a lot better when using a medium-sized or even a large focus zone. Using a single point focus, as you seem to do, makes sudden changes between similar subjects a lot more frequent, and this also has not changed significantly in my recent shooting with the new firmware.

I have the X-H2S and I struggle with the same false positive auto focus locks, especially with subject detection tracking. Yesterday I was taking a photo of a heron standing completely still in good lighting and the camera said it was locked onto the eye. I had to take 3 or 4 separate bursts (re-initiating focus each time) before I got a single sharp photo. It doesn't happen all the time, but perhaps that's the most frustrating part. It often results in me taking way more photos than should be necessary to ensure I get something usable, because the confidence just isn't there. I'm very disappointed to still be having these issues, and I hope Fuji can make additional improvements via firmware.

If this happens, I will definitely purchase a new camera body from Fuji. I would also like Fuji to implement an auto ISO function which will let you select a higher minimum shutter speed than 1/500 of a second. I get the feeling that people are praising the older Sony cameras based on old merits, and based on how good the new cameras are. The A7C and A6x00 might be really good, but they can't be perfect. Otherwise the A1 wouldn't be able to be improve on that. I've seen many comments about Fuji getting close to Sony with this firmware, "but the A6600 is still in a different league". Is it though? These results seem to be pretty damn good. Do the A6600 really never miss regardless of what happens?

Hi Chris: I am an amateur who enjoys photography. Have you noticed Fuji's AF's erratic and chaotic behavior in AF-S especially with wide angle lenses at narrower apertures? It is about Fuji's AF misfocusing with false focus confirmation. This problem has certain coverage online. This is present for me on both X-T3 and X-T5 (latest firmware on both) I own. According to someone's suggestion on the internet, I turned on the distance scale (google how to do it in AF). I confirmed it did reflect Fuji's erratic AF behavior, i.e . when it was showing it was locking on 1.5m, it was 1.5m, and when it was locking on infinity, it was infinity, since I could see other areas of the image being in focus and out focus. It seems the wider the angle of the lens and the narrower the aperture are, the more erratic the behavior is. Just try to focus multiple times with XF 16 1.4 at f/8 or XF 16-80 anywhere between 16 and 50 at f/8 on an object that is 10 m away (30 feet). Half-press the shutter button a few times. I saw that the determined AF distance was changing anywhere from 1.5 m to infinity. The problem is also present with wider apertures but to a lesser degree which is still a problem because the depth of field is narrower at wider apertures. The focus confirmation was positive in every case. It is like Fuji uses a random number generator to come up with the AF distance . Maybe, it is not a bug but a feature - this is how one would put it in software development to be politically correct. :) At the same time,. at 80mm the focus was locking on the same distance for me. e.g. it was consistent. The back button focusing does not help - same erratic behavior. Now, regarding the back-button focus technique: Fuji's focus peak is not as good as the one Canon has on Canon R. X-T5 has better focus peaking than X-T3 but it is still not on par with the Canon's. Another problem is Fuji's focus check magnification is not that great to visually confirm focus either. Try to use it in dim light - it is almost useless especially with wide angle lenses. To add insult to injury, when I use focus check magnification, FUJI comes up with a totally different distance - a shorter one compared to the one it shows without the magnification! In my case it was mostly reading around 5 meters without the focus magnification and about 3 meters with the focus magnification in this case. I have not done more experimentation with this though. This is just one time observation. And, I have definitely tried all kinds of tweaks to various settings of the camera including shutter mode (mechanical, electronic etc...), focus priority, subject detection on/off, AF+MF on/off etc... It sounds like there is a fatal flaw in Fuji's software and it has been fixed in neither X-T3 nor X-T5. I have read reports that it is also present in X-T4. Many people have been complaining the XF 16-80 f/4 was not sharp for them. I think it is partly because of the erratic AF. Mine is plenty sharp for me when it focuses right. But when it does not, It's very frustrating. Now I am blaming Fuji for what I used to blame the user error. I could not explain certain shots being out of focus. Especially, when I needed to maximize the depth of field for landscapes, e.g. when I was trying to use the lens' hyperfocal distance to AF on. I think this might also be the cause of my birds-in-flight tracking problem on X-T5 when the focus does not stick and changes all the time - so some shots in a burst are in focus and some are out of focus (1/1000 shutter speed used for bigger birds such as pelicans). Also, I had a few out of focus shots when I shot a couple of events with Fuji primes. Same random number generator in this case? Primes were shot at their widest - f1.2 or f1.4. I can't explain this one either. The focus priority was on. The auto iso with the minimum shutter of 1/200s. The longest prime was 56mm. It was not motion blur either. The shots were out of focus. So, here we go. I am starting to look back to a deeper involvement into Canon's mirrorless line. I am really missing good AF performance. I love Fuji's cameras and lenses but their AF makes so-so results with awesome equipment. It is good I don't make money on photography. Otherwise, I would be frustrated even more. I think they have to include a 3rd party distance meter along with their cameras to compare the distance meter's reading with Fuji's. Click the shutter button only when they are about the same:) Anyways, I hope I am not completely crazy with all this :) Let me know if you can conform my findings and if so, maybe you can find a workaround. Thanks a lot, Alex

The autofocus is significantly improved. My issue is this App require location background tracking "Always", not only "while using the app". No sure why they need constant communication unless user wants to.

Perfect video... as always. Can someone explain to me this feature that appears on the last page of the firmware explanations:: "The Af focusing speed has been improved when continuous shooting is started by simultaneously pressing the AF-ON button and the release button while the camera is out of focus."?

Great review as always. One small off-topic point, Canadians call the geese, Canada geese not Canadian geese, for what should be an obvious reason. We don’t take any pride of ownership in them, nor would you if they were called American geese! We call them Canada geese in the same way that you refer to French fries, not French, or Dutch treat, not Dutch as a generic title. They are most assuredly not Canadian geese! If you’d like to take ownership of them and call them American geese, there millions of us who would gladly step back and wish you luck.

Hi Chris. Thanks for all the excellent content you put out. Assuming the X-H2 AF performance is similar to the X-T5, how would this compare with the X-H2S AF?

The X-S20 having auto subject detection only in full Auto mode is such a weird restriction. I hope that changes in future.

Really good update and thank you for the update. I’m just laughing at one thing who really goes out and shoots a drone ha ha 😂….lol even taking photos of aeroplanes is kinda a bit lame. Sorry I’m not American I’m Australian and I always find it funny when Americans take photos of planes anyway. It looks like the update is really good. I did my update yesterday I could not get the app to work. It did my head in so I did the old SD card which actually worked really well and was quicker. These updates bring this camera which I thought was outstanding into a really really good camera. I love my XT5 and in fact, I will be buying a second one when I can afford it as I don’t like changing lenses when I’m out shooting because then I have to change back to my original ends. Always love your videos very insightful….. Also not be a very smart thing to do to have your own drone up in the air and then putting your drone controller down and taking photos. That would be a recipe for disaster. My tip is don’t do that people. Looking at the green square it’s definitely not jumping around as much when you look at the actual square it self it’s definitely not jittery like it was when we first got the XT5 it looks like it’s staying almost stable. Maybe the problem with the focusing was the actual software of the green dot net that seems crazy that could’ve actually been an issue. It’s not always the lens and sensor that is at fault. It can actually be the software that is built-in to the camera. You have to remember these modern Mirrorless cameras are computers. They have a large computer element to them, so maybe it was a software issue with the actual green Square because it used to jump all over the place.

When you was shooting you’re shooting the kids running towards you. Do you use C-AF single point eye/face auto? If so how would you compare it to zone C-AF eye/face auto?

Improving false positives is great. But I'm not seeing a big improvement to Fuji seeing faces in bushes and inanimate objects. And still need an easy way to switch face being focussed on with several people. Since the x-t3 I have set the front FN button to toggle face/eye detect on/off. Useful for when it starts missing or jumping all over the place. Even with this update I still have that set-up. It's better, but in some areas Fuji could still improve. And I'm sure it will over the course of the product cycle.

Can you also cover the xt3 too...many of us still have that and would like to know about your opinion on that and how it stands in today's date. Whether there's still hope for f-log assist, and active tracking in video mode.

Chris, which focus tracking mode were you using? I don’t think you mentioned that.

I tested with both Zone (for the subject detection stuff and some face/eye) and also Zone. Not so much single point, since for mostly subject detection and moving subjects I didn't want to deal much with single point.

I find the auto focus frustrating on XT-5, it’s hit or miss if the subject is moving. Eg someone walking and you have face or eye direction. Nicholas
