I remember the promise That you made in the barn When the kittens were born And you could not keep warm So you moved away the mountain That the sun rose behind And you said yourself a prayer And laid down with the blind But you lost them in your freedom And you need him now, you're wild Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child And the vow of compassion That you swore through your teeth When the war began to end And the photographs weep Well, nobody blames you As the train pulls away With its cargo of snow For these German paper-weights But you lost them in your freedom And you need him now, you're wild Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child Well, its five in the morning There's no one home Except for your wife And your child on the phone Somebody's got to listen To a promise or two Oh, this room is far too small For a pilgrim like you But you lost them in your freedom And you need him now, you're wild Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child So, now that you've decided To follow the sun Like a shadow of birds Or a King on the run Oh, your chains are too dark For the seas you must swim You're smiling at the seaweed But your smile is too grim But you lost them in your freedom And you need him now, you're wild Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child Blessed is the memory Of everybody's child

Music for the mystic hours when the person is alone (B. Dylan). Just think how many years we missed out on this song because someone decided to cut it from the album.

Wasn't on the European release of his 1st album. How could something this good remain an outtake?
@moondancer90664 жыл бұрын
I know, right? They cut two songs out.
@thehal3 жыл бұрын
Because the two songs were produced by John Hammond; however, he certainly could have re-recorded them with John Simon.

Is it just me, or is this the most haunting of all of Leonard Cohen's songs? From what i understand, this one was in the European issue of his first album, but it wasn't included in our issue here in the States. Blessed is Poland for being a refuge for the Jewish wanderer.
@paulsouth26047 жыл бұрын
I think it belongs on that first album, it's got that style, and it's good enough alright. I love it, but then it's new to my ears. That first album was intoxicating.

'Blessed is the Memory' and 'Store Room' appeared in the 2007 remastered reissue of 'Songs Of Leonard Cohen'. They're previously unreleased tracks, outtakes of the early recording sessions produced by John Hammond. The songs that appeared on the album were produced by John Simon.

this wasn't on any UK album. Been a Cohen fan for forty years and this is the first time I've heard this song.
This song is by far better than some of the other tracks from his debut album (namely: winter lady, stories of the street and teachers). I can't see any good reason as to why it was excluded from "songs of leonard cohen". It's a shame, really. Worst thing is that it isn't available on spotify, and thus we 're forced to use KZbin everytime we want to listen to this masterpiece.

Hey, if you want to listen to it on Spotify : go on a computer Activate local files in Spotify settings Download an mp3 version of the song Find it in the 'Local files' playlist Like the song or add it to a playlist that you downloaded on your phone Now you can listen to it on your phone

I'm a little bit unsure what this song is about. Form what I understand it's about a woman who gave away her children to the Nazis in order to save herself and then she tries to redeem her action but I'm not so sure. Anyone knows?
@ceef86882 жыл бұрын
it's a good song, but maybe a rarity by choice. Cohen never played it live or mentioned it--this is the first I'm hearing about it!
@fiorellafenati53952 жыл бұрын
ome beautiful songs like Store room or this one in my opinion has not sung anymore due to the change of voice.
@ceef86882 жыл бұрын
@@fiorellafenati5395 that could be so. I saw Cohen live in 2008, I think, and during Bird on a Wire, he hit the high "If I have been unkind" spot on---it sounded just like the old recording. But maybe he truly strained to get there.
