Interesting, those trees on short final made the radio altimeter skip ahead a little and call minimum slightly early. Great flight & great video, thank you!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
Sure, the radar altimeter sends a radar beam to the ground and measures how long it takes until it is back at the antenna. On this basis it calculates the altitude. If we fly over buildings, or other reflective obstacles, the radar altimeter moves up and down and shows the height above the building. During this approach, the minimum callout was based on the barometric altimeter. It was activated exactly at 340 feet barometric altitude.

Hi Stefan, thank you so much for you newest upload!! I love that you keep doing the MCDUs (even both of them!). There is something I was wondering for a while though: on the performance page, you need to use the bottom line select keys to move between the different phases instead of having to press the left/right arrow key like for example on the init page or others. Do you know why that is? Is there a good reason for that or just an airbus design choice?😅
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
First of all: Thank you very much for your financial support of the channel as a member! Without the financial support of the members, full flight videos would be not possible! I have no idea why it is done the way which you describe. I also thought about why the software was changed not that long ago to the current status. According to my knowledge, the design of the software is done by Airbus together with the manufacturers of the FMGS system: Thales and Honeywell.

Bewegungsrichtung... *staun* Wie macht das Flugzeug das? Mit einer Warp-Blase? Oder mit den ganzen „flaps“ iwi?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 2 күн бұрын

As always thanks for the insights. One question: DUS is your home base, the layout is not that complicated and stands have a VDGS. So what exactly is the purpose of the follow-me here? Looks like it's just for generating airport fees...
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
Thank you very much for your financial support of the channel as a member! At DUS airport, some parking positions have no guide in system. They also have no self parking ground markings. They require the use of a marshaller for the parking process. But we also see the follow me cars very often when we park at locations with the guidance system. I do no know if this service is just done as a courtesy or if there are other reasons. Maybe, somebody from the follow me crew or the arport reads this and can deliver some background information. What a proffesionalism, Captain and FO! Great CRM, great atmosphere in there, we should all take you as an example. Two questions (not critics!) though: 1: The PF (FO) seems to be hand-flying just above FL55. Does your company have a very relaxed AP policy? I think in many airlines it is mandatory to use the AP above a certain altitude. 2: Why do you both take off your seatbelts above FL100 completely? As far as I know, to prevent double-injuries in case of severe clear air turbulence, at least PF should stay loosely attached to seat at all times. Thanks für sharing your thoughts!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your feedback! We have to use the autopilot when flying in RVSM airspace. This is above 29000 feet and in accordance to the international regulations. Below, we can fly without the autopilot. I flew for several airlines. None had any autopilot policy in addition to the regulations which are published by the manufacturer and the EASA or FAA. Your statement about the seatbelts is wrong: We use a combined lap and shoulder harness. For takeoff and landing and in very turbulent weather, both have to be closed. During the rest of the flight, we just keep the lap belt secured as long as we are seated. This is in line with our recommendations for the passengers. Even if the seatbelt signs are off, we ask everybody to keep the seatbelt closed as long as they are seated. Please rewatch the video for example at 19:27. If you have a very close look, you can see that we do not wear the shoulder harnesses but we both have the lap belts closed.
@marcweiss9636
@marcweiss9636 Ай бұрын
@@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thanks so much for clarification! You are absolutely right - lap belt stays attached all the time. And regarding the AP, I didn‘t know that so interesting fact to learn, as FL290 is actually quite high up! Thanks captain

@ApproachandDepartureVideos

Thanks for watching and your question! My personal observation is that flightaware is very accurate and usually shows block times. I do not know about flightradar 24. My understanding is, that they show before the flights the official filed times from the Eurocontrol flightplanning system. When the flight departs, they even may use their own network of ADS-B / Mode S receivers. Sometimes, they have not data for the very low altitudes and the taxi times.

Hi Stefan can you explain the flaps 3 before gear down and what company and manufacturer says about it, interesting method to reduce. thanks!
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
Sure, non standard, we can do this. Most of the time, we use this technique if we are instructed (non standard) to fly 160 to 4 or so. Then we fly to 4 with flaps 3 and when reaching 4, we set the speed to managed speed, extend the gear and then the flaps to full. Advantage is that during the extension of the landing gear the gear doors open. They provide a good amount of drag to help slowing down the airplane.

Thanks again for the great job you are doing , educating and giving knowledge to others about aviation. I was thinking participating to a program called wapa about becaming a cadet. What do you think if I finish all the studies can I get a job to the company as pilot? What is the probability?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
My understanding is that WAPA is a program that is run by an airline and trains the new flight students directly for a particular airline. I do not know how this program exactly works. But some airlines do the general assessment before you start the school. This guarantees you a job as long as you pass all the required tests and the airline hires new pilots. Usually, the airlines hire the pilots from their own flight academy before hiring "external" pilots.

@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your good feedback! Sometimes, the audio is silent due to technical issues or when I intentionally mute the audio for privacy reasons. This can be for example for privacy protection of other people talking on the same ATC frequency Especially on the full flights, you hear sometimes a minute or 2 where we speak privately together and do not want to publish the content here. Usually, you can still hear the ATC audio during theses phases. I think it is better just to mute the pilots audio for a few moments instead of removing also the video during this time.

The ONLY thing that always held me back of pursuing the pilot career is my fear of not understanding whats going through the comms....like i can barely understand/hear what people are saying due to the white noise/mic qual./ connectivity issues. Is that a common thing?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Ай бұрын
The audio you hear in the video is very clear. It is the original audio from the cockpit, but recorded with noise suppression. We also wear active noise reduction headsets. So the audio in the video is very similar to what we hear in the headsets. ATC audio is transmitted analog and is usually received with some background noise which may have different sources. It is just a matter of training to "filter" the incoming audio from the different sources in your brain and to decide what is important or relevant and which is not relevant.

@ApproachandDepartureVideos

How common is it to have to do hand signals nowadays?

Everytime, when there is a thundestorm reported nearby the airport. Or if your headset does not work.

My personal experience is that the pushback with hand signals is very rare. Here, the headset of the ground crew was broken. So this was the best choice. When we start the engines at a taxi out position at which we can leave with own power without a pushback truck it happens once in a while that we do the engine start with hand signals.

14:11 It sounds pretty rough, like a flat tire.

No flat tire. The sound comes from the nose gear which is hitting the centerline lights.
