SUMMARY :
Closer...
They found the town silent, apparently abandoned. Then they found the first body strangely swollen and still warm. One hundred fifty were dead, 350 missing. But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California.
...and closer...
At first, they thought it was the work of a maniac. Or terrorists. Or toxic contamination. Or a bizarre new disease.
...and closer...
But then they found the truth. And they saw it in the flesh. And it was worse than anything any of them had ever imagined.

SPOILERS (stray thoughts while listening): (Also despite knocking it I do kinda love this book, it holds a special place in my heart; but revisiting it, man are some of the creative decisions amusing / baffling). 01:14:19 this passage freaked me out so much as a kid 01:57:44 Koontz’s most effective observation on evil in the whole novel imo 03:22:37 love the perspective, the sense of time during this scene; is the sort of thing that doesn’t translate when adapted to film. gives a ton of weight to the ‘looming threat’ for the rest of the novel 03:37:46 lost sleep over Tal Whitman’s “macabre image” first time I read this 😅 06:21:05 why spend HALF YOUR BOOK setting up the mystery only to reveal the nature of the Ancient Enemy in a *random aside about woodland critters?* Twenty squirrels turning into four raccoons, all just to mess with a FOX-ah, okay? THAT’S how you reveal it huh? How about two creepy kids turn into one Wargle? Imagine if the protagonists (the ones we’ve spent all this time coming to care about) witness the weird splitting and merging shapeshiftery stuff, if we got that from their perspective. 7:53:36 This is one of the most striking visuals in the whole novel for me. When I think of the “Phantoms” book, I think of this. 09:23:00 1. Radio announces police officer is missing or dead as of previous evening. 2. Escaped murderer knows police officer has ultimate mountain hideout. 3. Escaped murderer enters officer’s home, swaps prison duds for civilian clothing. 4. Escaped murderer *completely trashes officer’s home for the fun of it, leaving fingerprints everywhere*. 5. Escaped murderer holes up in ultimate mountain hideout. 6. Santa Mira PD begin investigation by checking missing officer’s home, immediately find evidence of struggle. 7. Lab matches fingerprints to escaped murderer. 8. Dog team at cabin effortlessly sniff out secret cave. 9. “Next stage of human evolution”, behind bars once again, wonders where he went wrong. 10:45:13 Ok, ok, despite the woodland critter thing this is a pretty sick reveal 🤘🏼 13:24:20 The narrator sounds like he is having so much fun doing the Dennis Hopper / Charles Manson voice :) Genuinely makes me squirm to boot

I really love this author Dean Kunz he bases everything in California situations happen. Also, it’s good and evil and really bad evil stuff one thing for sure …. There’s really demons out there. But truly, I say they’re really is a God Jesus is real and the angels… I’ve owned over 20 dean koonts books .. and they’re all very good one day. There was a fire and they all burned and there was pieces of every book all over the front yard the house burnt down all the way, and even the firefighters were looking at the hundreds of pages have burnt, but one thing always on my mind the Bible didn’t burn. It got a little black from the ashes, 😮 ..

Was this really the devil or a creature? Or both ? Did his son ever wake up we never know ? Great ending. Not sure if it's the best I read so far 18 books now it's between lighting and this and key to midnight and then whispers probably top 4. Lighting might still be first thisnone is close with key to midnight and whispers maybe a tiny bit better. Next servants of twilight then twilight eyes I think that should be great. Im kinda going in order now even thought I started with lighting. I give this like a 4.6

Great book, thank you. I really enjoyed it. And the narrator is excellent. Not criticising ,but am just pointing out that there is no way anyone is going to ride a Harley up a mountain track through the woods. Unless it was specially modified for the purpose, not the most versatile of motorcycles. However it does not detract from the story, in my opinion.

Koontz does that a lot... obvious oversights, comic book heroes and villains, painfully hokey romance and some of the worst written women and children by any writer from his era and popularity bracket. The unique and interesting plots are what carry the mediocre writing. He'd have been more successful, I think, selling story ideas to better writers for a royalty.
