For everyone who is confused on this one. "It started on Oct. 11, 2020, around 9:16 p.m. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to the BP gas station along US-27 after reports of two people breaking into tractor-trailers. Deputies said those two were found at the nearby Pilot Travel Center where they were caught in the act of trying to breaking into a tractor-trailer.........Deputies also unsuccessfully tried to box in the box truck, but were met with the broadside of the vehicle each time. And using the PIT maneuver was out of the question."We’re not PIT-ing this one, it’s a big one," the deputy said. As the chase progressed, deputies were looking for ways to end the chase safely. But it was when the driver of the U-Haul began to aim at the cars parked along the side of the interstate that the stakes became higher. Officer over the radio: "We got motorists pulling over, he's trying to hit them as well.""Still going down 27, it just tried to ram a car head-on," one deputy could be heard radioing dispatch."Officer advising he's got no lights on and is going southbound. It will be two males and advising he is driving in the wrong lane of traffic. We need to get stop sticks out..." the deputy told dispatch." Deputy: "Be advised, we're at 'deadly force' in this situation, guys. If we get the chance, I'm not going to let him hurt somebody else." "Given the circumstances and the risk to everyone on the roadway, one deputy with supervisory authority determined it was necessary to utilize deadly force."

@@dailyyydangles8094 One must consider, when shooting, where the bullet goes after the shot if one misses (not hard to do from a moving vehicle when firing a pistol). If you miss a tire, the bullet may ricochet off the hard surface of pavement and go quite a distance beyond. Who lives out there? Flat tires do not necessarily stop a vehicle. People are harder to kill with a pistol than most people think, especially if the bullet has to travel through a metal door first. I would have chosen to disable the engine - bigger target stops the bullet even when it does no damage, lots of systems to damage which might bring the truck to a controllable stop.

Shooting out of patrol cars is permitted in specific circumstances (such as this one) by most departments. The officers in this specific video could have technically used lethal force from the point where the driver starts trying to hit innocent civilians who are pulled over to the side of the road, not to mention every instance when the driver almost rammed the patrol car on his rear right side. The reason chases like this drag on for so long and pose such a great risk to the public is because (as mentioned by Shadow Wolf) with the restrictions imposed on police departments regarding use of force (largely thanks to people with ignorant opinions such as yours putting ever increasing pressure on already under-funded/equipped/trained police departments) it is becoming increasingly harder to handle these kinds of situations in an efficient and safe manner. Sure a bullet isn't the cleanest way to solve the world's problems but it sure is the fastest. And when the lives of civilians are at hand thats kinda what you need💁♂️ Does that help shed some light on the issue?

The problem with acting sooner is the approximate population of the area when making the decision to fire on a moving vehicle while you yourself are shooting. @Andrew Campbell above made a very good point. A statement released Tuesday by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office reads in part: "During this chase, Mr. Harris fled from law enforcement at speeds that exceeded the speed limit by more than 20 mph, and in traffic conditions which placed the general public at risk of receiving serious injuries. Mr. Harris was therefore committing the felony crime of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police Officer, OCGA 40-6-395. Harris also intentionally drove the U-Haul toward other people, including the pursuing officers, thereby committing the felony offense of Aggravated Assault, OCGA 16-5-21. "Given that the nature of Mr. Harris’s driving made him a suspected felon, officers were permitted to use deadly force to apprehend him because it was reasonable to believe that Mr. Harris posed an immediate threat of physical violence to every other person on the road. Additionally, a vehicle, like Mr. Harris’ vehicle, is an object which when used offensively is likely to result in serious bodily injury, which means the Deputy was also permitted to use deadly force to protect others from Mr. Harris’s commission of the offense of Aggravated Assault. While Georgia law does not require officers to try to use less than lethal force in these situations prior to using deadly force, the fact that deputies tried and failed to bring the U-Haul to a stop with spike strips further demonstrates the danger Mr. Harris’s driving presented during this chase. "Following a thorough review of the facts of this case and the relevant law, the District Attorney finds that the deputy who used deadly force against Mr. Harris was justified in doing so and did not violate the laws of the State of Georgia. Therefore, the District Attorney’s Office declines to prosecute the deputy for shooting Mr. Harris. The District Attorney’s Office has spoken with Mr. Harris’ family to explain our analysis of this matter and we sympathize with Mr. Harris’ resulting medical condition. The District Attorney’s Office considers the review of this deputy’s use of force closed."
