Full Bridge Rectifier Breadboard Layout
In this video we look at one way to lay out a full bridge rectifier on a breadboard. this is in response to a viewer question. the viewer asked is there was a better way than the "diamond" layout we often see in schematics. You can layout the the diodes in many ways as long as you pay attention to the four points labeled A,B,C,D.

HEY YOU ABOUT TO POST SOMETHING STUPID:
Yes, I know my hands are large/fat. It's because of a heart condition I suffer from called Congestive Heart Failure. Here's a link to some information about CHF: cle.clinic/2Td...
One of the symptoms is that is causes fluid retention, mostly in the hands, feet/ankles, and face.
It will kill me one day. I'm doing ok right now, but someday...

You have effectively flattened the diamond in the "traditional" bridge rectifier diagram. Nice clear explanation and quick, too. Thanks for posting and stay well.

You could also shot package full-wave bridges. You have 1/2 the leads, I have used them on Perforated Printed Circuits Boards.

Good video for newbies. Good place to find a low voltage transformer is inside a clock radio. One that plugs into the wall (obviously) the smaller the better.

Sorry for the noob question. Bit if the ac is forcing the current through the pos and it loops back through the neg what happens to the unused current? does it add to the Newly supplied AC current in turn increasing it? Not sure if I should use the term current instead of voltage. Thanks for the videos. I look forward to every one.

It's not so much current, it's just the negative half of the AC sine wave. It gets flipped and added in. So your input of say 12VAC at 60Hz becomes 12VDC at 120Hz. The frequency is doubled as we are using both halves of the wave in series.

I always try to visualise voltage and current using a water/pipe analogy and I have been playing with stuff for well over 40 years. Voltage is the pressure of the water in a pipe, while Current is the amount of water flowing through the pipe. You can have a very small pipe that has extremely high pressure that can cut through timber. However that same pipe may not have a lot of water coming out of it, but it will slice through timber, your finger, etc. This is HIGH Voltage, LOW Current. You can have a storm water drain outlet that has hundreds of gallons of water pouring out of it, but the pressure is low enough you could walk through the water. HIGH Current, LOW Voltage. The REALLY dangerous example if a fireman's hose. Gallons and gallons of water being shot up to a third story fire and the water pressure is high enough it could snap you finger if you were dumb enough to put your hand in front of the nozzle ! HIGH Voltage and HIGH Current. You can visualise most of the common components using the water/pipe analogy, e.g. switches, resistors, capacitors, inductors, transistors and diodes.

@@paulp2089 I was thinking something similar. I see the circuit as a loop and the unused water needs to continue and add to the new water. so does that increase the voltage? or current or nothing at all?
@paulp2089
@paulp2089 3 жыл бұрын
There are circuits that will increase the voltage, but they will also decrease the current, (no such thing as a free lunch). Keeping with the water analogy, the battery or power supply is the pump that moves the water around. Anything that is unused just sits there. If the pump is to strong the pressure will be too high and POP ! Technically if the pump is pushing way too great a volume of water even at the correct pressure - POP ! Like trying to run a 24v radio off an arc welder. The arc welder may only have 24v, but will push out 100-200 amps so not a good power supply for a radio.

Very timely, am building a project that uses 120ac but needs dc, but i bought a board on amazon to do that. I assume that the rectifier determines what dc voltage comes out?
@learnelectronics

The transformer determines the voltage, the rectifier just takes the negative half of the AC and flips it so you end up with DC.

I'm sure this is a retarded question and I'm an idiot but I don't understand how you are getting a negative voltage out of the DC negative side when there is absolutely no current that can get there because of the diodes
