In my city we have really solved the problem. All of the colonies have had every cat TNR and any kittens have been taken, socialized and adopted out. there are volunteers who feed and care for the colony and we have a hardware store that will donate all materials necessary to build winter shelters and stores that donate food for the cats as well. 10 years ago, a tiny stray kitten made her way through our front door and into my heart. My dad opened the door and she was right there. She walked right in like she owned the place, and soon, she totally did. A whole decade later, Squeaks is the light of my life and I don’t know what I’d do without her. I still wonder where she came from, but a friend who lived near by recently told me that her nights are filled with the sounds of feral cats fighting. I assume that’s where she came from, but I know that we will never be sure.

Elias - Wonderful story. There was once a car in our neighborhood. My son was younger then and the cat chose him. Eventually she became brave enough to approach us, then let us hold her, and finally come in the house and curl in laps and spending the night with us. A few years ago she didn’t come back, as she was old by then. Our hearts were broken. We’ve had two wonderful cats over the years, but I will always keep our future kitten as a house cat. Our first car was perfectly happy with us like that, and we loved her so very much right up to the time she went to Kitty Heaven. Kitten Lady is an amazing woman. Thanks for all you do.

One of my favorite cats came to me on a warm August night. It was a black kitten. My mom went over and tried to get her but she was so scared she ran off. We did eventually get her inside and cleaned up, she stayed with us for years and had a good loving home-

I'm currently trying to convince my city to help me get a male stray spayed, I have hope for him to get adopted because he is really sweet, but they're arguing he isn't the one "making" the kittens so he isn't a priority 🙄 Stray male cats deserve veterinary care as much as the females, but it seems like people are less open to giving them a chance, it's sad... I'm pretty sure he used to have a family and got left behind in a move, he is really human friendly, I'm currently feeding him but I can't afford to adopt him. I'm hoping the waiting list for my local cat charity goes through fast 🤞🏻

4 years ago, a young woman who worked at a restaurant in my local shopping center approached me because of the cat magnets on my car and told me she was going to college and would it be possible for me to help her find a feeder for a stray unsocialized cat that she had been feeding for a little under a year. this shopping center is less than a mile from my house and I'm here all the time, so I was more than willing to take over responsibility. I asked her if the cat had been fixed, and she told me that yes he had. I started feeding the cat. I placed a shelter discreetly for the cat and set up a feeding station, all that stuff. I periodically saw the cat and he was not socialized. I didn't see him for well over a month coming into June 3 years ago, 2017. But the food was being eaten, so I figured everything's fine. Then he turned up with two kittens in tow. He was a she, she was not fixed. We got the kittens taken care of and into rescue as they were old enough to be separated from Mom, and then trapped Mom and had her fixed, vaccinated, ear tipped and returned. 7 months later, in the middle of a brutal winter, I caught sight of a kitten inside my fixed mama cat's shelter. This was about a month after Christmas, so late January 2018. We managed to trap that kitten and get it into rescue as well. I set traps and trail cameras and everything. We do not have a huge free roaming cat population in my specific area of northern Virginia. Not once did I ever find an adult cat coming to the feeding station other than my fixed feral mama cat. Sadly, we think that that kitten had been someone's Christmas present who then got dumped. Because without posting a picture, I did post on local message boards asking if anyone had lost a young cat. This cat was like 12 weeks when we found him. No one ever stepped forward. I was fortunate that my vet's staff took on the challenge while I had him boarded to socialize him, and he was adopted to a loving wonderful home.

I’m happy for you. I’ve grown up with cats and now make a point of, when I adopt, to get the last chance cats from the shelter. My oldest cat is 17. Her daughter - the only one from the litter I kept - is 10. And then I have three boys, two belonged to someone who couldn’t keep them. And the last was a last chance boy from the shelter - poor thing weighed in at 25 pounds and would’ve been put down because of the amount of care he needed. When you get your cat, take a look at some of the adult ones. Their personalities are pretty obvious, they don’t need litter box training - and they’re happy to have a new home. :)

@Windmelodie4 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that cats can become up to 15 years old (ofc some get older than that or die much younger, I'm talking about an average) and can have up to 2 litters PER YEAR, each having an average of 3-6 kittens. So, even if the cat doesn't have a litter each year until her death, even just reproducing during twice a year for 4 years of her life could lead to *up to* 48 kittens, each of whom may live for over a decade too AND reproduce as well (again, this is just an example, not a 100% probability). And cats become fertile within the first year of their life (most I have seen were around 6 months). Unless you're a professional and responsible breeder, make sure to spay/neuter your cats and ESPECIALLY do that when they go outside.

I live in Compton, CA and we have a lot of “community” cats which are also having babies. Do you know of any places that I can take the cats the spayed or neutered free or low cost in the Los Angeles County? I really want to help them
@debradowling8004 жыл бұрын
Call a local vet and ask them about where you can find a TNR organization. They may even do it themselves.
@sarahgrijalva74624 жыл бұрын
A lot of places will also do cheap or reduced prices for fixing animals, which can help.

try looking up "FIX NATION". they work w/TNR in the LA area
@jenniferclark98423 жыл бұрын
@@sarahgrijalva7462 There should be more resources like that. Another in my area is an animal shelter that offers certificates that, when you purchase them, can be redeemed for use at participating veterinary clinics (cost varies depending on if it’s a spay or neuter of a cat or dog).

God bless you, Hannah, for your good deeds! In my hometown me and my husband, and our friends cooperate with local shelter too. We do not have a KZbin channel, but we do have courage to work on the problem of stray animals. I'm very happy to watch your videos; to watch someone helping animals too. Thank you for spreading this information and guides! We need to inform people around about how they can help improve this.

I absolutely agree with TNR and "completing the circle" because I know that there are times when cats from the same family will mate with one another, which was one of the reasons that I took my neighbors cats to the vet. 2 litters later and the dear mama was actually only a year and a half...at the most. And those 2 litters could have turned into 10 different litters. And on and on it goes.

I adopted my kitten from a shelter that started out as an organisation's whose mission was to do TNR, feed and provide medical care for feral cat colonies. They post weekly updates about what they do for these feral cats (along with adoptions of the week, etc.), and it's really wonderful to see all they do for these cats. I absolutely did not seek out this particular shelter, but I'm so glad my kitty comes from such a wonderful place. (They also chose to fix his broken hip when the vet recommended euthanasia, and I'm so happy they let my baby take the lead and show them he wanted to fight for his life.)

I just took in the most recent litter from one of the cats that my dad feeds. I have been trying to get him to trap the gramma kitty for two years. He is finally trying to actively catch gramma, mama, and uncle. Hopefully, we can bring this little colony under control within the next week

Our 14 week kitten is from a feral litter, whose mum got away on the first round of TNR with our local rescue charity. She is now living the kitten free life in her colony and I hope his litter was the last one there. I’m so grateful to them and you for doing this. He has been partly hand reared, thoroughly socialised and after owning us for 5 weeks is well on the way to getting us trained to his preferences. ❤️

I have a momma and her babies and we’re trying to get them fixed and released but no one talks about how much or how extremely expensive it is to do so :(. I have one place down here where I live that will do 55 per cat but the place fills up so instantly that you have to stay up till midnight the night before the post the schedule to hopefully get even 1 appointment! I have a go fund me but no one wants to donate to get a group of cats fixed.. I just wish someone talk about it more. Everyone says get them fixed get them fixed. But it costs 1000$ to get a group of 5 kittens (3 girls 2 boys ) fixed

Francey Childress I'm not sure where you live but you might try and contact some of the rescue groups or TNR organizations around you for help finding a low cost vet. I know around where I live the vets have a program where once a year they do spay and neuter proceedures for free during a week in the summer. Good luck!

thank you so so SO much for being a huge proponent of your TNR program!! it is so important to spread this information: your outside cats need to be spayed and neutered!! if you're feeding outside/community cats, they need to be trapped, fixed, and released if they're feral!! too many kittens starve and die because their moms can't or won't care for them!! get the cats of the streets and control the population and they'll be safe and cared for!

I'm so happy the shelter I recently started working at has partnered with a vet for a vigorous TNR program. Kittens are cute, but they sort of lose their shine when you are dealing with care for 25, and 4 half feral moms with litters.

How can I get a tnr program started in my community? There isn't one here and I would love to help. I've been doing out of my pocket for over a decade but fonances have been difficult lately. And the prices keep going up. I used to take them to a place that they charged me only $50-65 but the start of this year they increased the rates to $120 and that's at a humane society.

I don't know where you are from, but just start doing TNRs around your community by youself. Buy or borrow from another rescuer some traps and get a vet to help you out, some of them will do it for a very cheap price.

I live in the Antelope Valley, Ca. Low cost spay neuter vouchers come and go, If you are lucky to get one, then you pay $20.00 per cat. They do the same for dogs.. There is an organization in Simi Valley, Ca that helps with the cost of spaying. When they run out of funds, then the whole Valley suffers. There are some wonderfukl people in the AV. In particular, the ladies at The Leona Valley help out with cats, especially; I will give a shout-out to Joy Rodrieguez from the Leona Valley, who uses her personal funds to help animals in need. She is an animal dental hygienist, who goes all over the area to help cats and dogs ..She has a group of fosters that are located in the AV and Santa Clarita.

I'm really curious, maybe someone can answer this: would kitten and mama recognize each other after being separated for a longer time? Maybe even when the kitten was taken when it was only a few days old? Or for how long apart do they still recognize each other?

I highly doubt they would.

For cats it’s mostly about smell. You take a cat away from her kittens and put her into something that makes her smell differently, and the kittens will treat her like a strange cat.
