I was apprehensive about instal this (without permission) on my wife's new Model Y. So I did the obvious thing, had our 17-year-old son help. He has smaller fingers than me. Ive been looking for a nice seemless solution to an ambient light strip. This looks perfect! One quick question for you.... Ive heard the USB hub that the kit comes with, doesnt play nicely with the Samsung T7 SSD... have you heard or done testing with that? TIA

Interesting idea. That would solve the problem of getting it to the center console on older M3/Y. I've never seen an adaptor that would convert the light plug to USB-A (plus another light plug), but will check.

Amazing, just ordered to replace the generic one I have that’s a bit messy! Just to confirm - does this auto turn on and off when you enter and exit the car? And does it always default to the rainbow when you enter? Or does it use the light/color setting you last set it to?

It'll return to the last setting. The included sensor means that it'll turn off after 30 seconds of no activity in the car, and turn on when there is; typically that's 30 seconds after the last door closes, and back on when the first door opens. It's using movement (vibration) and heat to detect presence, so if you tap on the window hard enough, that'll trigger the lights as well. It works extremely well, I was skeptical at first, but it's a great solution to overcome the always-on USB ports.

Great video! I'm very satisfied with everything I've bought on Abstract Ocean. Just had a question about the light strip - i noticed the SSD for sentry mode was not being read correctly therefore it didn't save any recordings when sentry mode was on. Not sure if the light strip is interfering with the SSD USB port.

It really shouldn't be...you're using the fast USB-A port on the cyberhub for your sentry stick? There's been nothing similar reported, and that's how ours is set up as well, but if the issue continues please reach out to support and maybe we can try a replacement hub. abstractocean.com/pages/contact

@@AbstractOcean Hi! I initially didn't use the USB hub AO provided and instead used the USB hub I purchased somewhere else. Once I switched to the USB hub that came with the light strip, sentry mode is now working properly.

Interesting that on my 2023 MYLR the side of the glovebox doesn’t just come off like that. The bottom tab releases but the rest feels like it’s attached to the dash and I’m not gonna force it. I’ll see if I can still fish the cable with just pulling up the bottom of the side piece of the glove box. What year is the car in this video?

The end caps are all the same (the p/n has never changed in the parts catalog). The video was taking with a 23 MYLR, so maybe the clips on yours are a bit more dug in, but it should still pop off as shown in the video. I've probably had ours off many times, so they're likely a bit looser than most.

@@AbstractOcean I got it installed even without it popping fully off all good. Looks cool. The app on the other hand oh my. No clue what I’m doing lol. I noticed while in the car parked the lights would sometimes turn off it seemed. Not sure what was up. I would get out and shut the door and open it again and they would come on again. I’m sure I’ll figure it out. I’m guessing it’s the sensor thing in the glove box.

It's something we've looked at, but, honestly, it's probably not going to see the light of day. The power tap in the doors is quite invasive, and then sync'ing to the dash strip is complicated. We tend to only offer products that pretty much anyone could install, but the door would involve more than just popping off a couple of trim pieces.

It's do-able, we've tried (in the main trim gap/crease on the doors), but it falls outside of our 'mission' to sell accessories that just about anyone can install. It's very difficult to install cleanly, and needs a lot of cable work to get power there, and cables hidden.

Just got mine and installed it today. I downloaded the app and notice there's an off / on button on it. Can I just manually shut down the led light during the day time through the app ? I tested it today without the sensor while having my sensory mode on. The sensory mode recorded everything when activated, but didn't turn on the led strip; which is what I want. I like to manually turn off / on the led strip through the app.

Not sure I understand the question. The app will turn the light strip on and off, and that'll be remembered if power is removed from the light strip, but that's also why we include the sensor, so you don't have to do that. With the sensor installed, the light strip will turn off after ~30 seconds.

Oh man I think I need that lighting strip! I’m not sure I understand how that sensor in the glove box can understand whether or not there’s anyone occupying the vehicle to allow to turn off. Can you explain how that works?

It was originally designed for touchless operation of things like lights in rooms that cannot have switches (sterile room, wet rooms etc). They detect heat, movement and sound, through most materials, except metal, so it's ideal for this application. We didn't originally have this included, but after parking outside a movie theater, then coming out 2hrs later to a light show from the Model Y, we figured it would be better to turn off the lights when there's nobody in the car! It will detect movement outside the car if it's sufficiently loud. i.e. when I pulled the trashcans (wheeliebins) out of the garage this morning, it lit up for 30 seconds.

I've yet to find a need for the glue strip, having installed it in, I think, virtually every possible variant. Tucking it under the plastic lip is always preferable, but if you want to use the glue strip, maybe to get the light closer to the edge, then it will be fine, just be sure to really clean the area of the dash where it'll be stuck to, obviously there's a lot of airflow, so it will be dirty.

That would be the CTRL-Bar. The hardware is ready (and awesome!), but we had to re-do the app following Tesla's changes to the API, so we're just waiting on that before we start selling them again. abstractocean.com/products/ctrl-bar

For me this is a much better and cleaner solution as what is offered so far. E.g. string contains the leds, not just a tube where a single led is attached at the end, or using usb in glove box instead going to 12 V connector in the middle box. Is there a discount code from your side that can be used? For me here in Germany its + 15 dollar shipping.

They have so many names. Flow Series Fiber Optic seems the most popular, but, it’s a total misnomer, there’s no fiber optics! Let me see if I can get the technical name.

Came to get in the car now to leave and it’s not working :( Tried bypassing the usb adapter and plugging directly in, also bypassed the motion switch and still nothing. Bluetooth connects but light is not working.

Why do you actually need the sensor? I have the same led without the sensor and the lights turn on when i open the door and turn off when i close the door and lock the car.

How long does it take yours to turn off without the sensor? Mine without the sensor takes around 10 to 30 mins to turn off. With the sensor it’s just 20 secs.

We considered selling them (they're an ultra-slim metallic sticker), but never really pursued it. We have a black version on the center console too, which looks super-stealthy, but it doesn't actually stick too well to the soft trim, so if you're not careful, it'll be pulled away when dusting, which is why we backed away from this product. Obviously no issues on the dash though.

It does, just the USB hub (Cyber hub) will not, as the glove box on RHD cars is reversed (of course), but also a different shape.

Just two final questions before I place my order with you for the ambient dash lights. Can I plug straight into the Usb port in the glovebox without using the cyberhub If i decide not to use sentry mode? Secondly if I do decide to use sentry mode can I just get an extender cable for the Glovebox usb port and simply plug in the hub that way and leave it loose in the glovebox. I could tape it down or something like that to secure it. I'm not worried if it isn't neat in the glovebox. Thanks, Greg

@@gregoh5470 Yes to all of that, we've had a few customers in the UK do that, and glove boxes are the equivalent of a junk drawer in the kitchen, not meant to be neat! You might already have a USB hub lying around somewhere too; the lights are not fussy, but the sentry recordings tend to be a bit picky, but extending the hub that they ship with will be fine, just be sure to use a USB-A 3.0 extender to maximize the data throughput. Also, just FYI, they're on pre-order at the moment, we expect more stock to arrive on Apr 29th, so everything will ship next week.

Yes and no. The cables are long enough to reach any part of your center console. I do not have a 1st Gen console here to test, but from memory I think the easiest way into it was into the compartment under the armrest, where the 12V accessory (cigarette) port is. You then just need a USB adaptor for the 12V port. Getting a cable into the front compartment where the 2 x USB-A ports was, I think, a bit more involved.

@@mrthomasanderson We've had reports that the glovebox is different on RHD models, but the video was recorded in a '23 MY LR (Austin build). There should be a way in there , worst case coming down the side of the dash as shown, then in through the bottom (the gap between the hinge), but there should be an easier routing. Feel free to send some pics to our support and I can take a look there. We always knew that Tesla had changed the dash design at least 3 times since launch, looks like they've tinkered with the glovebox too...

Patience mostly. It is a pain, and I skinned the knuckle of my thumb the last time, but just go bit by bit with the orange pry tool, and don't be tempted to switch to the other end and leave the middle until last, as you'll probably end up with a bit of slack and nowhere to put it.@@hexenkingTV

Just finished installing in my 2023 MYLR - RHD made in China. The glovebox is completely different. Just the panel opens, the inside is all fixed in place and enclosed. There's no access into it through the hole under the side panel. Had to route the LED wire under the side panel, out the bottom and into the glovebox around the bottom hinge. The USB hub is harder to see and access. Couldn't get the Cyberhub to connect properly. As if the usb port not quite long enough. Had to connect to a short usb extender. All seems to be working anyway, will play around later when it's dark, or maybe wait until storm Erin has blown past Ireland!

Yeah, the RHD glovebox is different (not just mirrored). The hub is designed to tuck nicely into the corner on a LHD, but because it's USB-A, it's the wrong way around for RHD. As for cable routing, it sounds like you found the best way, at least without having to make a hole somewhere, which is always best avoided. It's odd they're so different though, it's SO easy to get a cable into the 2023 LHD glovebox, but we see a lot of build differences between the US factories, yet alone RHD coming in from the Shanghai factory.

We just had another customer do the same thing in a RHD, basically you run the cable down the side as shown, but then carry on to the bottom and bring it in though the gap where the glove box is hinged. I know a picture would paint a thousand words, and I wish I had a RHD to show you (but mostly I wish Tesla were consistent with their parts!). The 'cyberhub' is designed for a LHD glovebox, and tucks in there perfectly, but it will not work in a RHD glovebox unfortunately.

No. It's just a USB device (power only) as far as the car is concerned.

That's why we include the sensor switch to turn off the LED strip, regardless of whether the USB port is still powered for Sentry mode. You don't have to use the sensor of course, but we felt it's a great option to only have the lights on when there's someone in the car.

A bit of an update, the cables are plenty long enough to get to the center console, and are easy to run in the trim below the glovebox. They'll reach the back, but I don't think you want the cable mess back there. I no longer have a 1st Gen center console, so I'm not sure how easy it would be to find a way into it, but I'm 90% sure there's a path to the rear compartment where the 12V accessory socket is.

Absolutely. You can have virtually any color as a static color, just pick from the color wheel.
