He was insecure about it because a drama teacher once told him that his voice made him sound like he was singing "out of the back-end of a drainpipe". How horrible, insulting and completely _wrong_ they were. Alan was a bass/baritone with a beautiful warm timbre - if properly trained he could've been even better than we see here. But the only training he ever got was for Sweeney Todd, as far as I'm aware (please correct me if I'm wrong). He didn't often take on singing roles because of this insecurity. At least science knows his voice is perfect!
