Leonard Rossiter and Frances de Ia Tour did not see eye to eye on politics. They were at oposite ends of the spectrum. In rehersal's they rehersed their parts with a large space between them. On the day of recording an episode on set with a pre run through of the show to set the camera angles. If Frances sat on the couch Leonard would stand behind her. The only time the pair of them sat or stood close together was for the filming of the actual episode. Rising Damp was recorded before a live audience and the 4 of them were so good they could record the whole episode in 1 filming. Leonard and Frances from the final runthrough to the actual filming were alway's adding details to their performance. Don Warrington said, " Working with Leonard, Frances and Richard I soon learnt I had to up my game. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Another true British classic, our golden period without doubt and I do not believe we will ever get near such quality again. Each of the actors learned from previous previous past masters. Richard Beckinsale, father of Kate, was taken far too early he had a great career a head of him, but what we did get was classic. Damn we were spoiled back then and in a way it is nice we are all a little older and can really appreciated what we had, Its like a great meal that you can still taste hours later knowing at the same time your never likely going to eat like that again.

Eric Chappell had to write more dialogue because of the timing between the three was so quick and slick. As the series goes on you see how Rigsby is slightly in awe of Philip...he's everything Rigsby wants to be.

Leonard Rossiter (Rigsby) was actually a very versatile, successful theatre/stage actor, he actually died whilst getting ready to go on stage in 1984.

What fascinates me about watching these old shows with you is what you laugh hardest at (always a joy!), and what seems to pass you by. I know humo(u)r is subjective, but for me the killer line of this episode belongs to Miss Jones: “Mr Rigsby, will you kindly extinguish your stick!” Such a beautiful double entendre / euphemism for his ardour. Love sharing your enjoyment with these. For UK people of my age, this is part of our national psyche.

Try watching the Cinzano ads (compilation) with Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins. Where he plays an upmarket version of Rigsby in a series of very funny ads in the late 70s.

It's great reliving this with someone who has never seen it before. I don't why this comedy didn't cross the pond at the time it was out. I grew up on this stuff, as well as loads of US TV like Mash and Cheers. Your laugh just adds to the comedy. I try and introduce my daughter (21). to this sort of thing, but for some reason it doesn't translate to a younger audience.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s and saw reruns of this (as did some of my friends) and I thought it was funny. I’m not sure if general US audiences would’ve warmed to it much in the 70s. John Wayne famously didn’t get “it ain’t half hot mum”. And the US TV companies might have asked why on earth they’d broadcast British comedies when they could make their own. US television remade several British comedies. Off of the top of my head: All in the family = Till death do us part 3’s Company = Man about the house You again = Home to roost

Rising Damp had a fantastic 4 person dynamic with Rigsby, Alan, Philip & Ruth. Of course it was Rigsby, the pivotal character who ALWAYS came off worst at the end of each episode. And it was bloody funny too

It’s not just the clever writing, it’s how Rossiter carries it off. He’s brilliant. He’s the key to the sitcom. At 12:17 Rigsby mentions a scenario with “some bird in a nightie”. This is a clever reference to a series of tv alcoholic drink commercials Leonard Rossiter did around that time with Joan Collins. Do a search on YT.

wiki has Ep3 as "A Night Out" not this one. I notice Rigsby mentions another tennant, Spooner, in this one. "A Night out" features Spooner. But this is the "love wood "episode so it's all good :)

The series was shot in studios in Leeds. Although the setting is not specific, just somewhere in the north of England, but the bike girl, Maureen, had the authentic Yorkshire accent. All three of the leading men have subtley different accents. Rigsby comes from Liverpool, Alan comes from the Midlands and Phillip aka Don Warrington when he came to Britain was brought up in Newcastle so he may have had a geordie accent but obviously that wouldn’t sound right for the part.

Once you've watched the entire 4 series [and maybe even the movie] checkout ''Rising Damp TV Series Documentary.'' Very interesting with some surprising nuggets of behind the scenes info. Eg. Richard Beckinsale was filming this and 'Porridge' pretty much back to back, so had to wear a wig for 'RD.' He hated it and would rip it off after filming every episode.

My favourite comedy series. I notice you keep referring to the writers as "they". It was entirely written by one man, Eric Chappell, who based the series on his stage play. He wrote many other tv comedy series, all of which are excellent and worth looking up, although RD will always be my pick of the bunch. Glad you like it.

Well said. It's always surprised me that Eric Chappell doesn't seem to be praised as much as other comedy writers. Rising Damp was a masterpiece and and some of his other sitcoms eg Only When I Laugh, Duty Free, Home to Roost, were excellent too. Although Leonard Rossiter and Richard Beckinsale are sadly long gone, Eric Chappell is happily still with us at the age of 88.

Frances De La Tour was not that old in this , I presume her character is set a little older. As an actress she had already done Shakespeare (TV I think and Theatre), but the comedy stalwart was Richard Beckinsale, mid 20s playing a slightly younger person, had already been in the ITV comedy series 'The Lovers'

Very underrated show and really turned the world of typical British small business on its head. Surprisingly a forecast of the future too with the sales of Grot do so well looking at the quality of much of the junk we now buy.

Ruth was in a bit of a quandary when asked to go to the wrestling. She's far too polite to outright refuse, (especially since Rigsby has just done a few minor chores for her), but she really doesn't want to go and is trying to think up excuses for why she can't possibly join him. Having been told she's not going, Rigsby is a little crest-fallen, but is civil enough about it to console himself with a, 'better luck next time', frame of mind. The expediency of them trying to woo the women shows just how desperate they are. That Rigsby would actually believe the nonsense about the, 'love wood', and that Philip actually had a plained example to hand that he willingly gave to him, along with him actually trying to lure Ruth with it, all adds to the comic ridiculousness of it all. Philip once again makes a complete fool of Rigsby, and Alan got stuck somewhere in the middle.

Wow, I'm appreciating Rising Damp more watching it with you than ever I did when it was new. I even learnt a new word from you, Effusive. I consider myself honoured to have seen Richard Beckinsale live in the London West End play, No Sex Please, We're British. He did though leave us with a legacy, his gorgeous actress daughters Kate and Samantha. Whenever I now see Don Warrington as the Chief of Police in Murder in Paradise, I always to myself mentally refer to him as that bloke from Rising Damp.

I think the first episode was a pilot episode because IMDB shows S1 EP0, 1, 2, 3 etc. which may be behind the confusion. Certainly missing an episode though, I thought it was odd they mentioned Spooner and we've not seen him.

Definitely, after Rising Damp, go to Porridge from the Pilot episode and on to episode 1. Probably the best Brit comedy ever. And even more characters than in Rising Damp.

If you want an alternative look at the characters - in different ways, Ruth and Alan are both 'racist' in more benign ways than Rigsby. Alan sees him as an 'exotic' friend and Ruth sees him as an 'exotic lover'. Both because he is black, really :) Philip knows all that, of course, and uses it to his advantage lol So he's not being abused in any way.

To be fair, part of the reason Alan sees him is exotic is the stuff Phillip tells him. I imagine Phillip was the first black person Alan ever met and he was just hopelessly naive and ignorant, but at least he didn’t hold to any of the negative stereotypes Rigsby did.

I do not think it is wrong to like a person because they're "exotic " nothing wrong with it at all. Tbh exotic is subjective, my partner is from the Philippines and she sees me as "exotic" yet I am white, exotic basically means different. Quoting Google... This half hour show would take a week to make. Put together by Yorkshire TV whom decided they wanted to be a regional BBC , and hired some BBC producers to bring this about, and seeing the stage play persuaded the writer to come up with some new episodes based around the characters. A day read through at home, Two days read through and practice at local studios in London where all the cast lived, a day journey ( train or car) to Leeds , hotel or boarding house overnights with a day dress rehearsal , then the day of shooting. , the main afternoon shoot was in front of a studio audience. (but morning bits could be added if footage needed), then a day to edit and broadcast. Repeat.
