For over 50 years I have owned and trained many Border Collies to competition standards in Agility and Obedience. They are not the best dogs for suburban homes with small gardens and given inadequate exercise. (if their brains and bodies are not exercised they can become frustrated and neutotic). Border Collies are bred to work; extremely intelligent and often happier on a farm herding sheep.

Border collies are the best. I was raised in the country and we always had dogs. However, one day l went to visit my sister and hubby on their new farm. They had changed farming lifestyle from Dairy and Goats to Beefies and Deer. Their border collie was not coping. She was scared. So my sister was talking about having her put down. I was horrified, so l put the dog in my and drove off. By this time my marriage had ended so l had move from the farm to town. The dog had to adjust from a 400 hectare farm to a town section. She adjusted perfectly. Everyday she would go on her rounds checking on all the neigbours. She had learnt their daily habits and they loved her. One day my sister asked if she could have her dog back. I agreed but it came with conditions, including family holudays at their bach at the beach. The only thing my sister would not agree to was letting the dog in the house. However everytime l would visit, the dog would be at my feet inside. As far as the dog was concerned she was always my dog. She lived to an amazing 18years of age and sadly passed away with cancer. I have had a few dogs since, but l still miss my Border Collie buddy.

No, I don’t hunt, but I train my dog to use his nose and fetch. And because my dog needs new goals. I make the exercises difficult and different every day. Because else he get borred. The border collie in this video is perfect for push ball. He can safely herds in a game and not chasing cars, bikes and other fast things.

A Border Collie is one of a great herding dog. It needs a life filled with duties it has learned to obey. It isn't at all a pure family dog. Playing fetch and bring back the ball isn't a game for Border Collies. It's a adrenaline pumping disorder manifesting in them that won't end... There are plenty different hunting dogs, many of them may become a family dog... some of them will never be at ease without a proper task of trailing down a target. Lakeland Terriers, Fox Terriers, Pointers, Norwegian Elkhound, Bloodhound, Coonhounds, some Spaniels, the Lurcher (not listed as a breed in FCI, but a great hunter's dog since the middel ages) are definitely working dogs. Just family life isn't their aim. And, after all, don't we all have to leave the house for about 7 to 8 hours, go and earn some money, learn in school..??? So that's a nasty family life: hours of boredom and no ability going for a pee... One really really needs to handle that urge of WANTING a dog. It always will depend on you. Not like kids, they do too, but they grow and one day start their own life.... It's hard to be a pet in our times... How many walk their dog paying most attention to their smartphone.... THINK if you really want to SHARE time, a life time, with a friend.... It easily turns out to be an uncomfortable duty and challenging task. That friendship can turn into a trap of many boundaries which are not by happy nature. Think also well of the costs, life isn't cheap and the vet has a happy hungry wallet! Really fight down temptation of wants and make mind maps of your free time, the financial situation, who is there to help....ect. please sit down and think sensible about pro and cons having a dog ❤🙏🏻

I usually don't like making assumptions but I really don't believe that one dog barking at River made her that aggressive. If it was just towards other dogs then I'd get it but why would it make her aggressive towards people or vehicles, she's definitely been under socialised and probably just not taken out enough. Collies can be quite nervy and 90% of normal people (not working on a farm for example) cannot really exercise a collie as much as is needed for most of them. Many of them are lovely but I don't know why they're such a common family dog because they're not suited to it, they are happiest when they're being worked

Yeah, except she's allowed outside, which means that cat is out there killing birds, small mammals, reptiles and pissing/shitting on other people's property. Why on earth is it acceptable to let these roaming predators in our native habitats when they kill 2 BILLION animals annually just in Australia alone, with one roaming pet cat killing, on average, 186 reptiles, birds and mammals per year?! Unacceptable. No other species gets to climb into backyards, piss and shit everywhere and hunt and kill native species. Don't get a pet if you can't keep it indoors, the cats themselves can hardly be blamed for their natural instincts but the owners cut off years from their cats lives when they allow roaming.

My aussie was like River, but was 7yo when I got her. She had been an indoor dog her entire life until I got her. It took me two years to get her where she didn't become reactive at everything and everyone. She's now much more learned and confident in the outside world. She is still a bit reactive to slow moving cars and still very initially reactive to people in the house. But she is learning.

When he is still biting at 16 weeks, you definitely did something wrong. Puppies in a litter would usually teach each other not to bite, so you needed to take over that role which you haven’t done obviously. If the puppy bites, squeak and nib his ear back, this is what a sibling would do and this is how they learn: I bite and it gives me negative consequences from others. Usually, with a 8 week old pup, it takes some days to a week until they’ve learned to not bite people when trained properly. You can also take on the role of the adult dog and growl and attack back, which is what they do when the biting gets too much for them. Dogs are not particularly soft to each other, and if we do not take on the role of adult dogs and siblings and give proper consequences for bad behaviour, the puppy will not be socialised properly. You have to learn the language dogs speak and the best way to do this is to observe how dogs interact in a pack.

River the collie's reactivity was too extreme to be caused by only one event. I believe she was not socialised at the right time. River lit up when the ball was introduced indoors, she was visibly desperate to do that work - therefore the ball could have been utilised as a great training distraction/reward. The ball could have been used to shift her focus onto her owners, and the reward for ignoring bikes and dogs would have been playing ball. In terms of exercise, a collie will need/expect as much exercise as they get - the more you exercise them, the more they will need/expect that amount of exercise. So, while they must have plenty of exercise just like all dogs, they don't necessarily *need* to run all day - they just have the *potential* to be able to run all day. They 100% need brain work - problem solving, tasks, training, jobs, work - and this can take any form. Provide a good mix of exercise and brain work, and you CAN have them as house dogs/pets. EG you can train them to do things around the house (collect items, tidy up, move things), you can train dog dancing inside a normal house, you can set up house & garden agility, you can do clicker training, do scent work, and that's on top of the usual trick training and playing with toys. What is under-estimated is the amount of time this will take - but once they understand what training *is*, they can learn anything, which is a very rewarding and amazing experience.
@fiammaspell
@fiammaspell 2 ай бұрын
That comment you made about how they'll require the amount of exercise they're given is so important and I wish more people understood it. If any dog - of any breed - is constantly provided with something to 'do' then they also never learn how to cope when they aren't doing something. And most people that get collies are given the advice that their dogs are going to be machines that need to go 24/7 when overstimulation is just as much an issue as understimulation.

@@RB-jx4vp Yes, good options for helping that dog, but those are things that should have been researched, expected and already planned before even getting a collie of all things. Alot of the big chain pet stores do free puppy socialization clubs in the UK, my dog loved them it was a continuation of playing with her litter siblings, her classes consisted of puppies of all sizes. Her favourite playmates were cockers and sausages and she was the one who encouraged the shy ones to play, after that I took her to Dogs Trust puppy training and put alot of hard work into her. But because of puppy club she is great with most dogs, very very submissive which is her go to move when not sure. Anyone thinking of getting a puppy I recommend looking up local puppy club classes for their pups and when walking them letting them meet and greet dogs of all sizes and breeds provided they're all under control, of course they're not going to get along with everyone, but neither do we. I wasn't going to get another dog after the last one, but I'm glad we did.❤

This is ridiculous. A 14 month old dog is a grown dog not a puppy, he should neither bite nor snap at anyone, period! I really cannot stand owners like you who do not properly train their dog and then find excuses for the dog’s misbehaviour based on completely wrong assumptions. What if your Golden ‘mouthes’ a child in the face next time, he will be put down before you can say stop. A well trained pup learns not to bite people and other animals during the first week. It is basically the first thing you teach them besides house training.

Border collies are super dogs: super intelligent, super sensitive and super active. Because they are so smart & sensitive they can pick up on unintended cues and learn the wrong behaviours so definitely not a learners dog. Personally I think they are the easiest dogs to train because they generally want to please, love to work and learn so quickly. They don't respond well to impatience and anger so owners have to be in control of their own emotions. A half hour walk around the block or throwing the ball in the park is not exercise. So folks do you homework and commit yourself entirely to this wonderful deserving dog.

Rubbish, this idea that dogs need 24/7 occupation to feel relaxed and be well behaved is the biggest myth, only surpassed by the myth that you can castrate male dogs into behaving well. The number one reason these puppies misbehave are owners who do not set boundaries and act scared and shifty around the dog. To tell a puppy that bit you that you are now bleeding as a consequence, like he understands and cares, is a brilliant example for someone who doesn’t have a clue about how to raise a puppy. People think that they can treat puppies like little babies, which is 100% NOT what a puppy needs. Puppies need strict boundaries and self confident owners whom they can rely on.

I wish more people would learn about how they act and function. It makes understanding them and working with them so much easier. But so many people box then in and assume they only act in a certain way and then get frustrated when they don't respond like the neighbors perfectly trained dog. I used to work at a boarding kennel and we had this super dog and people reactive dog. He was a sizeable mixed breed who'd growl and lunge at anything. They'd have to use the catch pole just to feed him and he'd cause his gums to bleed from Biting at it. But I actually looked at him and his body language and he was just scared. I began giving him treats at a distance so he could learn that were not here to cause him harm. And within 2 days he'd actually calm down when he heard me talk to him. I was the first person to take him out of his kennel without a catch pole which was the main thing that caused his aggression. And would you believe it while he was still a little nervous he was so calm and sweet. Anyway long story just to say I wish people would actually listen to what their dog is "telling" them.

Dogs need to learn that they are not the boss and that they can trust their humans. The same with children. They need to be able to trust their parents and that the parent is ultimately the boss. It is amazing how many people can not establish these two fundamentals.

Daughter has a cocapoo/cavapoo puppy & I came across the program on CH5 recently, its helped me get the puppy understanding some things & doing as its asked. What I picked up from the program was its often the owners that need training not the dog, just need to get this puppy to stop nibbling or biting clothes & the grandkids to realise how the puppy acts is often down to their behaviour which can encourage unwanted behaviour. 🤔

Wow. Sometimes perhaps it is better to start with a puppy rather than a child. Yet -- other times, people have children already but an out of control puppy. Perhaps having been raised with well behaved dogs and taught how to teach a puppy when I was a child myself makes a bigger difference than I thought. I have this automatic "oh, no. I am in charge and you are not!" reaction to misbehaving dogs and children. Interestingly, both the children and the puppies respond to me quicker than to their own parents. I've never understood that - until now. Boundaries. Just strong, clear boundaries.

I have a couple of Wolfdogs, to protect the bred reputation I did the training and got K.C certificates to prove. I am horrified at the number of 'ordinary dogs' who are allowed to behave badly around me, many idiots walk down the busy, narrow winding lane past my home with them off lead (that is illegal) sometimes this triggers my two and they pogo at the high gates I put up to my garden....it is always mine who get blamed, even though they have not got out, do not bark and just pogo!! The smaller the dog the funnier people seem to think the bad behaviour is, they wouldn't laugh if mine behaved thus, they'd be terrified!

I don’t understand people - you get a puppy and do no training and then cry because they aren’t being the dog you want. Take the salon where the lady expected her puppy to be in all day - no toys or things to entertain her. I’m sorry but some people are just stupid. My pup is 18 months old, we’ve been to 3 puppy classes (8 weeks training each) so she is sociable with other dogs and people, I still train with her every day to give her some mental stimulation. Puppies like children are a big responsibility and it’s your duty to look after them and do what’s best for them.

Just start with small steps that all end in a positive experience. Let him hop in the car and find a treat and out again. Several times until getting into the car is a great thing. Then start the motor and give him a treat, rinse and repeat until this is a positive thing. Then drive a couple of meters while giving treats, until it is a good thing. The trick is to go slowly and not let them have bad experiences along the way. It takes a lot of patience.

4:03 First of all... River needs a different leash. Don't use a roller leash with a dog that pulls that hard. Gives you less control. Use a simple P-leash that loops around their neck (NOT A CHAIN CHOKER, those only hurt and damage your dogs throat). A P-leash (sometimes called a q-leash) is short and good to jab to distract your dog. I used it with training my rottweiler. Worked wonders (in combination with consequent training ofcourse. The leash alone isn't going to change anything 😂😂)
@robinrutherfordcost4748

Plus a flexi lead is always tight so the dog never has to check in with the owner - they know exactly where you are - the other end of the tight leash. So difficult to get owners to have a loose leash. It's like they've always had a tight leash and just don't get it.

@@averytainton1431 Absolutely agree. It's a mistake to think a small dog is going to be easy. Research the breed, and bet a pup that will fit your lifestyle. Some big dogs are basically cuddle bundles and a lot of small dogs think they are protection dogs! Also, there's a window for socialising a puppy - after 16 weeks it gets more difficult to do easily. A retired greyhound is a very good fit for someone who just wants an easy companion who will not need a lot of exercise. Great Danes are lazy too! But all puppies are hard work, just like little children.

He lives in the city and doesn't bark/chase/react to anything. I worked extremely hard to train and socialize him, and with a border collie training never stops. I got him after I'd quit smoking and was walking/jogging 10-12 km a day for a long enough period that it became a regular habit. Anytime I consider sliding back to unhealthy choices I can't cause he needs me at my best. Hungover mum isn't going to walk 10k.

The dog certainly stops the unwanted behaviour, which is good, but I imagine that it is not teaching confidence rather than just compliance and the worries in the dog are likely to come out in different ways instead.
