There was a time when obey was included in marriage vows and seen as essential for a couple to maintain their happiness. A husband was to feel superior to his wife, she belonged to him, was little more than a possession, and it was her responsibility to remain submissive, docile, and appease his every whim. However, these days the vast majority of marriage counsellors, priests, pastors, celebrants, etc; regard the vow of utter obedience as a subject of its time and culture, and is no longer fitting to today's couples. So much so that many working in the industry will expressly suggest to intended couples to exclude the term from the vows because of the negative implications. To use a throw-away term in the Bible that is no longer expected or suggested to couples as a reason to mistreat your partner is asinine, perverse, and repugnant. Mr. Kelley's actions throughout this case are in every way are reprehensible. I hope Ms. Weaver realises the relationship is deeply toxic and chooses to leave Mr. Kelley. I hope that she finds someone who loves and honours her the way her husband should have. She didn't deserve what Mr. Kelley has done to her.
