Mr Leong is definitely doing more than his fair share of work, being more active in parliament than many elected MPs. He has raised many points with sincerity and reason, but many Singaporeans who say they would like an alternative voice seems to be more interested in berating him rather than applauding his hard work. Interestingly, the ones making fun of him often do so in broken English. I mean look in the mirror sometimes really. We do need a good alternative voice, and he has been trying his best, and improving as time goes by. Thank you Mr Leong for your hard work! By the way, many elected MPs do not engage in debates, meaning their work load might be lower compared to Mr Leong.

official support for the opposition is done in most countries where the opposition is part of the political system. it does not mean that his party cannot make it. MPs need resources to do their work. you can't expect to do a good job of scrutinising legislation with the help of part-time volunteers, which is what happens in Sg. and btw, his salary as an NCMP is only $2k per month.

Indranee said MPs have more than the fair share of opportunities to raise issues in parliament to hold the government accountable, but when MPs like Leong Mun Wai and Sylvia Lim raised doubts or questions in parliament, particularly when there is a lack of information and they needed to raised these in parliament to get answers, MPs like Indranee accused them of not doing their homework and come to parliament to raise doubts which are unsubstantiated. So at one end, these MPs from the ruling party are not willing to release all information for everyone to access, yet accuse others for not doing their homework when they hardly have any information on their table, and now they bring us back to square one saying if you have no information, come to parliament and raise questions for it. So in my mind is, they are just saying anything for their own interests.

A responsible opposition party should not ascribe their incompetence to produce better alternative policy to the lack of resources and data. PAP started their journey of nation building barehanded without any resources. But with their diligence and determination, they could work out remarkable policies bringing better life for our people. Now we are a developed nation with pools of experts and talents, opposition party could easily tap the resources of their staunch supporters many of whom are veteran architect, city planner, ex-chief economist, ex-CEO of telco, legal practitioner, entrepreneur, etc. The difference in the outcome between ruling party’s and opposition party’s is just a matter of putting the people’s interest above their party’s.

Education is compulsory in singapore. Therefore, even the poor can have their children educated and get a well paying job as long as they study hard. Besides that, Singapore is conducive environment for studying as it is peaceful, stable and safe. There is religious and racial harmony in Singapore. There is meritocracy. There is little to no corruption. The poor are able to have homes and are able to travel anywhere through the convenient mrt and bus system. To be honest, having homes, being able to travel, being given opportunity to be educated and upgrade skills are already very good. The poor from other countries would love to be 'poor' here than elsewhere.. of course, the prerequisite to survive in singapore is to be disciplined, to be hardworking, to be resourceful and to grab opportunities that are given. To wait for help and be lazy is not an option.

@fed02
@fed02 Жыл бұрын
I dont know how much they donate but I am sure they pay a fair share to income tax. I dont see an issue of paying the ministers a high salary if they can deliver results because their market value is of that amount. Even WP's ministerial salary formula proposal was similar to the current salary package.
@kaister901
@kaister901 Жыл бұрын
@@fed02 That's not what you were arguing about genius. Why you shifting gears from your original statement? Your original statement was confusing minister allowances as finance given to parties to use. "The Leader of the Opposition is given a higher allowances and more resources. But Pritam Singh was too quick to announce that he would donate half of his allowance." Allowance and resources have nothing to do with each other. Now you want to suddenly talk about income tax? So, what? The opposition members don't pay income tax? Get out of here. Next time, think twice before writing rubbish in the comments. Though, I have to say, you follow the PAP playbook very well. When called out on something, ignore it, and distract people with something else.

When calling Parliament set up a research department to help MPs in their research, PSP NCMP revealed the weakness of opposition party not being able and capable to produce alternative policies having the same breath and depth as the Government’s, because they do not have the resources to conduct comprehensive and in-depth researches. Such divulgence gave voters impression that the “Affordable Housing Scheme” and the “Millennial Apartments Scheme” recently proposed by PSP are not better alternatives than the existing policies being implemented by the Government. This is indeed contrary to the PSP’s claim that its manifesto offers a better alternative to the current problems that we are facing as a nation. Logically voters would thus be curious to find out how did PSP work out their alternative policies in their manifesto, when they have no resources to conduct researches to understand in-dept our economic, social and political problems. It leads them to further question - are these alternative policies down to earth and viable? WP did not make similar calling and neither did they stand up to support PSP’s calling, obviously the “lack of resources” is the problem only faced by PSP. Perhaps they should revamp their own party operations before making any proposal to change our National policies.

Until then, these 80 over PAP MPs particularly the central cabinet will never depart from the old style of LKY way of goverance ,which is total dormination without any opposition. If LMW thought there is any chance that things would change , he is only dreaming. Which brings me to say the facts, so when will some change really happen ,where truly 2 parties will have an equal say on issues and policies, NOT less than 20 to 30 yrs from now, which in a more simple way of looking at things, not less than 4 elections from now. LMW's critics are pretending that they are smarter than him, as if they knew better than him on the points he raised. Without this exchange would Singaporeans even know how and why these things work the way they do? That's the whole point of an opposition voice, to point out things that are seemingly not right and then get a detailed explanation by the government, keeping status quo if need be. These constant challenging, explaining and reviewing are ultimately good for the system. So long as opposition MPs conduct themselves in an honourable manner, these kind of debates are fantastic. If Singaporeans continue to mock the "losers" of debates, it may turn into a competition for MPs to score political points, defending to their death even the other side makes a better point, just so they don't look foolish.
