This is simply not true. ESPN always broadcasted major sports, they never broadcasted niche sports like this, it was never part of their programming. ESPN 2 was the network that launched to expand coverage and broadcasted non major sports, this was in the 90s. Thus were the joke ESPN 8 comes from. Several orders of magnitude obscure than what is on ESPN 2. If you ever read a book on ESPNs history, you would know that nobody took them seriously at first and obtaining the rights and broadcasting niche sports would have hurt their credibility and advertising during those nascent years.
