Fighting larger fires in California. Everyone who lives in these areas can buy a fire hose and a hydrant key but generally just assume the fire department will handle it. Buy those items and you can save your house and your neighbors homes keeping the roofs wet and the flames at bay.

What's so strange is that we see hundreds of these videos where homes are burning and we never witness any humans or animals vacating the residence or hosing down their homes. Don't see any vehicles at all not even fire engines nor any helicopters that drop fire retardant they used to do in the old days when I lived in Southern California

In the dry season, people need to be careful with fire hazards. One spark is enough to cause all this . Make sure when there's possible fire hazard you have water /sand/fire extinguisher at hand. Do not smoke cigarettes in these areas. This is such a waste of nature and properties. I hope it can be put out fast , it's a hell of a job.

It is amazing how fast a fire can burn a house. The flames seem so close and then they are gone. The heat of a fire is amazing. It is really strange to see 1 house still standing and the neighbors house is gone. It is really sad, nothing left, gone is a second. I wish some of this rain on the east coast would help with the brush fires. We have had enough rain and we would be glad to share with the fire areas.

Fire departments have been begging people for 50 years to create defensible spaces (no/low/drought tolerant shrubbery) around their homes in areas like this and it has been proven time and time again that folks who do that have a much better chance of their homes surviving a fire like this. Unfortunately, people often disregard that advice and bring shrubbery & trees right alongside their dwellings and expect the fire departments to save their homes and sadly that seldom works.

@@JennyWren333 I agree that no solution is ironclad but defensible spaces at least provide a chance! Building codes throughout these urban interface areas generally require fireproof (or fire resistant) roofing materials, so embers dropping on a roof aren't usually the trigger. What most often happens is that combustible materials (landscaping items in particular) below the the roofline catch fire and torch the undersides of the eaves and siding. That's why clearing combustible materials away from the structures is an effective measure. There are tons of studies you can find that bear that out.

If there are any leaves on the top as well, an ember can catch that on fire, burns through the rubber seals. Off it goes. Hot plastic falls into the interior, which is all plastic, and it burns like an oil fire.

A beautiful hill, beautiful views of the city and the valley attract young people who like to go by car to such views often. They light a cigarette, smoke a little, then someone calls them and they quickly get into the car and run away. They throw a still-burning cigarette on the side of the road or in the dry grass and it's a complete disaster and several families are homeless.
