Either will work, APSC will be the cheaper option. As I mentioned it fully depends if you need wider than 24

I shoot on A7iii, I love to shoot wider and I do some Real Estate shooting. Also being my only camera at the time I wanted to be able to shoot in low light and get a good image. Now the question is what will my second shooter look like. Hmmmmm......A6400, A7iv (when that comes out), or the A7Riv......hard decisions. I did pickup three A7Riv's to flip on Black Friday ($2,450 each!! crazy).......we will see what happens if I actually keep one. The wife will probably not agree lol. Either way nice job on the video as always.

I use the a6500 with the Sigma 16 and 30 because it fits my needs for food photography and small video work. The main reason I went APS-C is because its cheaper than full frame just like you said in this video. I will most likely upgrade to full frame in the future (probably when the A7iv comes out) and use my current setup as my secondary but as of right now, it gets the job done for what I do on Instagram and as a hobby.

i use everything and anything that does the job...if it's casual and about money,get whatever.If it's a serious hobby,get the most for your dollar,and if you make a living shooting,you already should have set aside the money to invest heavily into your craft...I'm shooting full frame 99% of the time and my ff camera has a APS-C crop mode..

You've made an error. You have to compare the APS-C ISO value with the FF ISO X 2.25 (crop factor of 1.5 squared). The ISO performance will then be identical. The reason to do this: APS-C has 1.5 times less light than full frame (around 1 stop of light). Compensate for this by opening aperture by 1 stop, ie from f/2.8 to f/2. This will give the same DOF and will allow you to close your ISO down, and thus give the same noise profile as FF. The only things you cannot compensate for are the higher megapixel count and dynamic range combination.
@chudopalov1977
@chudopalov1977 4 жыл бұрын
ANON you right ! And another wrong information about the cost of lenses! FF lenses are chipper with the same DOF! He have to compare 1.4 APSC with 2.8 FF.
@HSNG10
@HSNG10 4 жыл бұрын
The shot we need to take may limit what we can do. For example, in low light indoor sports, we may need SS at 1/500 to freeze the motion. Then both APSC and FF lens may have the widest F1.8. That means for the correct exposure, both APSC and FF will need the same ISO. So there is no way to compensate. And at same ISO, the FF will usually give better image. I noticed my a6300 is fine up to ISO 3200 for me, but with my a7Riii, I can go to ISO 6400 for me.

The unified e-mount really is a big plus. If I'm shooting wildlife I can stick the full frame 200-600mm on the a6400 and get an equivalent 300-900mm. If I'm shooting video I can stick the APSC sigma 16mm 1.4 on my a7iii and now it's stabilized with the a7iii's IBIS.

I am into Wildlife and I used before both APS-C and Full Frame. For me APS-C has the nice advantage that I simply can get closer to my subject, the crop factor of 1.5 comes in handy. You can also crop with a Full Frame but this goes on the resolution. So do you see the difference? In my opinion no, I could show you bird images so rich in details, most people would say it’s with Full Frame but it’s not. So it really depends on the situation. However, using both APS-C and Full Frame changed for me with the release of the Sony A7R4. With this Full Frame camera I don’t need any APS-C any longer. Because I just can do a 100% crop and still have an image with 27MP. What a game changer for me. And still nobody will see the difference what in this case would be irrelevant because it’s all Full Frame but cropped :) And by the way, using Full Frame lenses on an APS-C body is a good thing to do, it’s my standard in Wildlife - nobody should believe the nonsense told by the Northup noobs in their latest video, they don’t know what they talk about.

I had the a7r2 & the a6500 and found that I prefered the video onthe 6500. I also liked the small form factor & tended to use wider lenses on FF & longer on the 6500. I sold both for the a7r4 which gives me both options in one body but at a higher price. In terms of lenses I use a lot of legacy glass & now there are some cheaper lightweight good options for FF. And the new sony aps-c faster zooms are expensive but significantly lighter. There is a great potential for pancake primes for the crop system. Sony did try this by initially bringing out the16mm - 20mm but from what I have heard the optics were not upto the mark. For video - gimbal use I think the aps-c has an ergonomic form factor. For stills too there are different positives &negatives of 24mp at different sensor sizes. At the end it comes down to what kind of work one is doing - budget & weight of camera-lens combine

Recently I upgraded from an a5100 to an a7. Between selling the a5100 and buying the a7, I only had to spend a 100 dollars, pretty insane when you think about it. I had already invested in FE glass for the a5100, knowing I would likely upgrade at some point. If you want full frame on a budget then the a7 is a great option. I only use it for photos. For video I use a GH5. I wanted to get a cheap full-frame to get some first-hand experience of the full-frame experience, without having to take a mortgage. I also have some vintage lenses for focal ranges I use less often.
@michaels8597
@michaels8597 4 жыл бұрын
here is the deal....Great video... 1)What do you NEED and why?When you can answer that logically and completely,you know what you have to get,since there are many options.If you are serious about shooting,you should already set aside a healthy budget for your photography,which has really never been for the frugal.My full frame camera did NOT cost that much more than it's good APS_C equivalents.Great APS_C cameras can cost around $1500-2500 when you factor in the glass,batteries,etc..They tend to not have the same battery life as DLSRs or cameras like the Sony A7iii,so while you can rock with 2 batteries with the Sony,you probably need 3 or more,or a battery grip like with the Fuji XT3.Then you have to factor in how much glass do you NEED,not what they talk about on KZbin.There are professionals who shoot with ONE prime or ONE zoom,and they make a lot of money.There is nothing set in stone that you have to have the sharpest,most expensive lens,when the fact is,most people won't know the difference.ESPN films in 1080P still i believe i read the other day,yet i have NEVER been sitting down watching TV somewhere and someone takes note of it. 2)I have a Sony APS_C camera that is excellent in the dark,and no one ever said anything about 'noise'.The fact is,many of us have 'noise' or whatever naturally,because we dont even have 20/20 vision,and for most of us,images are about the content,the stories,and the emotions they invoke,not the pixel counting and techno babble.I shoot with a full frame camera and it also has a APS_C crop mode.I had just gotten my camera and I'm just shooting at night,in the rain,went to New Orleans,shot,came back home,and then realized like a week later,i had my IBIS OFF and I was in crop mode,not full frame.The next option is,use BOTH.You can get a Sony or Canon,whatever,and use full frame glass on BOTH.So here's the way to save money,for example.You get the Sony 6600 with a lens you know you NEED,and then you also get a Sony A9ii,you need,and use the full frame glass on both...easy...Of course,any smaller body is not the same as say a nice hefty DSLR,like a Nikon D850,which will feel more balanced with FF glass...just a hypothetical example,but i do know you can put FX glass on a DX body. We do not have to 'choose',we do not have to 'switch',we do not have to sell the last camera,as long as it still works,it has a use.When we invest,we have to pay attention,because it's not just body and glass,much of the time.Batteries..flash units...gimbals?...sliders?...slave flash units....Lighting fixtures...desktops for editing...portable drives..servers/NAS units...redundant servers/NAS/hard drives/RAID systems..software....printing in house or use services?.... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ There are a host of things to consider,and yeah,when i was shooting with the Sony,my I3 laptop was fine,but now with the full frame camera ,this I7 laptop handles it just fine...That doesnt mean I threw away nor sold my other computers,only the ones it made no sense to keep.I gave away 6 desktops,because once the I Series of Intel CPUs came out,it made no sense for me to keep any more than one or two Pentiums.If you can swing both,and use both,it should be rewarding.I dont get caught up in comparisons because if someone sucks at shooting it doesn't matter if they have a Lumix or a Leica.

The APS-C cameras are always cropped in or used to have one I loved it but now I have my Sony coming in the mail and I can’t wait to start shooting with it to get that full frame look you can get that on APS-C camera yes you can And a lot of the details that you get on both cameras are remarkable they’re both really sharp it’s just that when you have certain lenses on a crop sensor you’re always cropped in a little bit more so you don’t get the full light angle look but honestly some of the lenses out nowadays they’re really soft at the edges so you end up crapping it in anyways

There’s a big difference between full and crop. Went from A6500 to A7R IV and I haven’t picked up my A6500 since. A7R IV is better in every way IMO. Also great that there is a 26 megapixel crop mode on the A7R IV so I can still use all my lenses!

I use both full frame and apsc for weddings. My A7iii primarily has a 28-135 cinema lens and my A6500 has the 10-18. I much prefer the convenience of the A6500 and I’ve got four other lenses for it. Considering buying the Sigma 16mm 1.4 too especially after your video on it 😬. The A6500 is way more versatile and it doesn’t hurt as much if something gets damaged/lost/stolen. It also has the play memories app which I’ve hacked to disable the record limit but I don’t think the new APSC cameras allow this. But the A7iii dual card slots are a much for professionals.

Really good video subject for me at this point in time. I am one of those "on the fence" types and your video just helped me decide to go with full frame. The 1.8 really stood out, and so did the ultra wide sample video. My channel is growing, I am commited and getting better little by little. The a7III with the kit 28-70mm for 1,898USD should be suffcient for what I'm shooting now and anything else for along time. Thanks, Cycle Fab.

Hard choice, but if I was travelling I'd go the A7iii with something like the Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 + 28-75mm F2.8. Probably pick up that kit for under $5K AUD.

Great basic tutorial on the differences, Chris; I am sure that you will have helped a few people in their decision making when contemplating getting a new camera. I do know how easy it is to spend money on full frame glass but I think the the Sony 24 GM may be worth every penny. It is indeed, a "special" lens. One thing I will add that although a full frame camera is heavier ( and you really notice that, at first!) it is actually easier to handle in usage. Heavy glass on a crop sensor body is so unbalanced, and even though I have smaller hands, a few hours of shooting on the a6500 leaves me with a hand cramp - you really need to add a grip for comfort which then defeats the small size factor.

Looking at different videos, nobody mentions that the image may not be as sharp on a crop sensor due to the higher pixel density. 32mp on a crop sensor may be 85mp equivalent, not a lot of use if your lens only resolves 18mp!

I didn't look close enough to see which camera has more bokeh or depth of field around the 3-minute mark. Yet, it was easy to tell which camera was the full-frame one and which had the aps-c sensor in it. It seems you used the same focal length on both cameras but forgot to adjust for the crop factor on the a6400, resulting in a "longer focal length" when compared to the full-frame a7iii. A longer focal length means more compression. The background appeared closer to you on the a6400 so that kinda gave it away to me and I didn't pay attention yet to the depth of field. An now that I did while writing this, that's just a small difference like you're trying to show!

I went with the Sony A7R III for the 42.4mp fullframe sensor and can still get decent APS-C shots in its APS-C mode at 18mp and for the extra reach on my 70mm-300mm G series lens. If one is starting from scratch, I wouldn't go APS-C. Not saying they are bad. 6400 by Sony, T3 and T30 by Fuji - all great cameras. Even M6 II by Canon I would consider. But the good lenses for those are rare and the ones that exist are almost the same size as the full frame ones. So one gets neither small, compact size, nor best image quality and low light performance. In my eyes, the real choice for a person who starts from zero is between m4/3 system and full frame system. One will give you actual compactness, lower overall price for the system and more inconspicuous look with camera in hand. The downside is noisier pictures at higher ISO, not as good AF in video (for some reason, although the fps and sharpness are great in m4/3 video) and flatter look because of the greater DoF. The other will give you most powerful cameras, with best image quality, a different look (if you want to) via the greater DoF, best low light performance, most comfortable physical controls and access to the best lenses available as native. The price for all that goodness will be higher overall cost, big and heavy system (mirrorless bodies are small, but the new lenses are still huge and will stay like that) and all eyes on you because of the size of the whole thing. Choose which compromise to make and which features are most important for you. Plus, the lens selection is generally better in m4/3 and full frame, with Fuji being the only ones with a proper lens lineup in the APS-C world. And the lenses are actually more important than the cameras, because a good lens will serve you 10+ years and all but most expensive camera bodies come and go.

Hopefully within a few weeks I'll get used to the apparently terrible sony menu system and I'll let you know if it solves any of my complaints. I own the Sony a6500 however I was wondering if it is possible to use my Sony 35mm f1.8 prime lens were I to purchase the Sony a7c and get 35mm natively, am I correct in assuming this isn't possible since the aps-c lenses are concave at the mount end rendering the 35mm native view impossible?

I bought Sony A6600 at B&H for $1200 a few days ago and learned that the camera does not include a battery charger! It's $100 on Amazon and $80 for a spare battery. (Not like anyone mentioned this anywhere )A 6600 does not have USB C , only micro USB. It took me almost 5 hours to charge the battery. Today, I took this camera back to B&H and returned it and bought Canon EOS R for $1500 instead (includes a battery charger). Take that Cheap Sony!

Well, go for Fuji if you want an APSC ...Why not sony if you want to spend more money for full frame... however a A7III plus lenses is way more expensive and negligeably better than fuji in some aspect only like low light performance or AF. Sony A7RIV is the best Sony however it will cost you one arm. You may consider a NIKON D850 at this range of price. If your wealthy enough to invest in a sony A7RIV you can otherwise go for a GFX medium format (better image quality but less versatil).

I do not quite agree about the prices of the lenses, I think the full frame equivalent lenses in some cases are even cheaper and they offer better quality than the apsc, if you buy only GM lenses I believe you but there are a lot of lenses that they are impressive and are not expensive, like the Samyang 85mm 1.4, sony 35mm 1.8, zeiss 55mm 1.8, sony 85mm 1.8, Tamron 28-75 2.8 to name a few ... most are not 1.4 but the image quality they deliver are outstanding and the other advantage they have is that they are as small as the apsc ones
@karafuru7666

He chose not to apply equivalent depth of field. If he did, many of the statements made would become false. FF can be cheaper than APS-C. Low light on smaller sensors can match larger sensors. Full frame look defined by that blurriness becomes indistinguishable. It comes down to if the system has what you want which is the valuable point of making the generalizations he did. They aren't making 24-105F8 zooms for FF despite bodies like the sigma FP which is a FF camera smaller than some M4/3 bodies. In the same vain they aren't making 18mmF0.7 M4/3 lenses just to match the FF 35F1.4.

Just my personal opinion from what I've seen, but even at the same megapixels full frame seems to be shaper then the apsc when it comes to photos. I dont think it makes much difference for video, but my a7iii seemed to produce sharper images even with the kit lens on it vs my a6400 with a kit lens and even sigma art. This is an extremely nitpicky thing, and i think in most cases nobody could even tell the difference. If i was doing print work, I'd probably go full frame though, and something more like the a7r series as well. But i don't really think you can go wrong with any of them for video.

@@chrisbrockhurst ultimately i agree. I mainly use an a6400 and im very happy with it. Okay not gonna lie. The whole "Gear doesn't matter" thing that I hear people talk about is bull. Yes it does not make you instantly a better creator, however it does allow you to do so much more. I recently made the jump from a Canon SL2 to the Sony a7iii and immediately have been able to take extraordinarily better photos and create way better videos and everything is so much easier to do. I get the concept and why that is said, because some people believe if they drop a bunch of money on a camera, they will instantly be good, but gear absolutely does matter. Anyways, buy an a7iii 😂
