Great video, Chris. Your tip about keeping the custom buttons the same for photo and video is spot on. When I first got the camera, I customized it differently and found myself constantly fumbling around because my C1or C3 button had a different function than it did 10 minutes earlier when I was shooting a photo. It was frustrating enough to do exactly what you recommended. Always enjoy your content.

Hi Chris, just came across your channel recently and I’ve been binge watching! Great content and information. If I could have some guidance.....I’ve really been debating between 3 cameras and I’m stuck. The GH5, A7iii, and lumix-S1 (all totally different cameras, I know lol). Primarily I need 4K video (some gimbal and some handheld) but will also be taking stills. Most will be done outdoors in Texas...so overheating scares me. I’ve seen your 6 month and 1 year videos on the A7iii and you didn’t experience that, but that’s my biggest worry after seeing some other reviews. I love the awesome ibis and 4K 60p on the Panasonic cameras but I feel the A7iii is the best value. With all of that being said and considering the lens ecosystem - what do you suggest? Sorry for the length of this but I truly appreciate it. Btw belated congrats on your baby Harper...I recently welcomed a baby too!
@chrisbrockhurst5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Appreciate the support .I’m always going to say Sony because I’m a Sony guy. I havnt had issues with overheating but it depends on how long you are using it... Panasonic is a good option too but then you have worse low light performance. I think you should try the a7iii and see what you think! Do you have access to rentals?

Great video Chris. The information for me was very valuable as I'm just starting out with videos. I haven't found anyone to answer my original question that I came on here in search of though. That is, How do I switch from viewing photos to viewing videos on my Sony a7iii? It will only display for viewing the last thing I did whether video or photos. Very informative video! I've got a question! Why when you're changing your ISO in 3:12, the camera is lagging a little bit?
@kidmd645 жыл бұрын
Does movie mode work similar to manual, in that if you change settings while in that mode, they are saved? So if you leave movie mode for manual mode, and then go back to movie mode later, your settings are the same. Could this give you a quick third set of video settings in addition to 1 and 2?

Thank you! Question: Can you have the Picture Profile on for one mode, and off for another mode dial?
@blackcobolt15205 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris for such a clear and useful guide. I'm wondering if you can do a video specifically showing your workflow for organising, saving, editing and archiving in hybrid situations. So for example, when you empty a SD card do you import all the photos and videos into Adobe LR and store them in your LR folder? Or, do you import the photos only and save the videos elsewhere in another storage workflow? If you store both photos and videos in LR, do you point to the video files and photos in Adobe PR to save duplicating the files in different folder structures? How do you save and structure your PR projects and assets used in the sequences? Eg, do you mirror the LR folder structure and filename convention in a PR folder structure so that you can easily locate photos and videos taken at the same time? I have not been able to find any videos online explaining the hybrid workflow at all, let alone as clearly as you explain things. Please help ASAP! Hopefully this will be a good topic for a future video.
@chrisbrockhurst5 жыл бұрын
I’ll be totally honest in that my workflow isn’t really ever the same. It’s a mess of folders normally kept in a master folder for that project. But sometimes I’ll separate the photo and video because I don’t need both for a video project.. hard to explain. Might be a video idea for the future! I just don’t see anyone copying the way I do it because it’s probably a mess haha

I tried to modify the custom button on video mode but the functions don't work, every time I press any of the buttons it tells me " this operations not available as follows" Do you know why that is?

I’m planning to rent one of these, and I won’t have long enough to figure out all of its complexities. I’m planning on getting footage of a lake at night (hopefully with a full moon in the shot). With regard to the aperture setting, ISO setting, and shutter speed, what would you recommend for crystal clear footage with no grain and the sharpest possible focus for everything in the frame? Also, if you set all the settings to exactly the way you want them, will it stay on those settings if you turn the camera off/change out the battery/change the SD card/etc? Thank you. :)

Need advice between 16-35mm f2.8 vs 24mm f1.4 Will i be missing out a lot on that beautiful depth of field at f1.4 and night video and photography? I do street, landscape and wide portraits. But i want to film travel videos too! Is 24mm too narrow for vlogging?
@SuperVSZ5 жыл бұрын
AllenTV I just went with the 24mm GM just cause at 24mm the 1.4 is better than the 24 on the 16-35 2.8. Smaller/lighter and cheaper. Also, it's way sharper in my opinion at that focal length imo
@JustinDoesTriathlon5 жыл бұрын
Chiming in too... I'm *deeply* torn between the 14gm and the Tamron 17-28. My heart is GM, my brain is Tamron (or Sony 16-35, for that matter.) Here's where I've mostly landed on it: If you're a photographer who wants to shoot beautiful photos, that GM is a hell of a lens. If you take a lot of video (vlogging or otherwise,) the flexibility of the zoom is hard to beat. You've got the 16 end and then, combined with clear image zoom and crop mode, nearly 50 or 60mm on the long end. That's a pretty seriously useful range. For video, you could throw that on and have a mostly one stop solution for all your needs. Even in pretty damn dark, 2.8 will go a long way paired with the a7iii; you can easily go to 10k or 12k ISO. Not to say that 1.4 isn't better, of course, but it's all compromises. If you're shooting in dark *constantly*, then maybe. If you're shooting in dark on occasion, I would prioritize day to day. It's the same reason I bought a 70-200 f4; I could afford the 2.8GM, but one stop of light for the rare times I shoot in low light isn't worth it to me for the size and weight penalty of that big glass day in, day out. 24 is not tooooo narrow for vlogging, but 16 feels much wider than 24. Every mm on the wide end is noticable. TLDR, I am with you man, my heart is GM so bad, but practically, I think it's a good 'next lens,' after the zoom.
@chrisbrockhurst5 жыл бұрын
I hear you both. It’s a super tough decision honestly and one I still gotta figure out. I don’t need everything I have now so one lens is being sold and I can’t decide which! I LOVE the GM 24 F1.4 and really can’t imagine selling it.. the Tamron seems to be good so far but it’s not hugely exciting.. review is coming of it too ✌🏻
@JustinDoesTriathlon5 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbrockhurst Super excited to see that review when you get. 100% agree with you on the "Tamron isn't exciting" bit. It's like... The Tamron is maybe (or maybe not) the right 'tool,' but the GM has that *look* and feel and romantic drive to it. I don't own it, but I did rent it, and it's the first lens that's really made me feel that way. I'm pretty not-romantic towards cameras. Sony already feels clinical to me in the first place; it's a good tool. I'm sure I'll pull the trigger and love the 24 at some point, but for me, for now, the zooms just feel like the 'smart' move. EDIT: Interestingly, same reason I went with the Tamron 28-75 over the 24-70GM. I shoot with the 24-70 at work so I know it well, but the size, weight, and cost penalty just couldn't win out over the 'it feels better' element vs the Tammy. The 24-70 *is* sharper, but for me, it's pretty moot. I feel like that choice was easier than the 24 1.4 choice though.

Picture profiles are for videos so you can grade. You can take photos with certain creative styles and I think picture profiles too but it will only apply to the JPGs, the RAWs will always be as is, if you edit with RAWs anyway it just makes any colour changes redundant. Hope that helps!
