Is it just me or do you love the sound when Jess moves the plants around? The sound of the leaves rustling is beautiful to me. ❤ Jess you and your family have been a huge inspiration to me to continue my journey in my garden and try new varieties and not worry too much. Love your channel! I watch every day. Just want to add that Iillies are just about my favorite flower I have always had them. Also, I have always have a cat, now I have 2 that just moved in with us. My cats will eat all kinds of grasses, even my spider plants but I have never seen one even sniff the lillies, and they are everywhere, in my garden, down the drive, in the veggie patch, window boxes, and on the deck both front and back. The last kitty I had, Chloe, she lived to over 18 yrs of age. She didn't die of lily poisoning. So, yes, be careful but don't lose sleep over it. Thanks for the many hours of inspiration and courage you have given me for gardening and for life in general. Your devotionals are some of my favorites.

Hi jess! I have had had success cutting out the squash bug worm. Have you tried that? When I see the orange “castings” at base of plant I just take a small knife and snake a small slit in stalk and pull out the worm. Cover the hole with dirt and your squash will keep on going. I was skeptical that the squash would survive but the grown established plants just keep on growing!

Hey, Jess... Try growing Algonquin squash (C. Pepo). It is a Native American variety that is resistant to squash bugs. The vines and leaves are a little "prickly", so you definitely need to wear gloves. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 6/18/2019.

Jess maybe you've covered this in a previous video but I haven't seen it - can you share how you meal prep around your harvests? I just started my first garden and im hopeful for good harvests but i am used to traditional meal planning around getting everything from a grocery store - exactly what I need in the exact quantity. So I'm a bit daunted about using our garden produce!

Jess, try kaolin clay. It's not a pesticide. The squash bug and beetles will get it on themselves and try to clean it off. Less bugs mean more squash. My problem is usually the borer. Good luck.

In central Illinois it's been a horrible struggle with squash bugs. I planted early last but covered with a thin bug covering until they were blossoming. Then I kept close watch. First time we got a few zucchini in ages. Squash bugs came but the vine borer finished them off. What happened to the days when people had so much zucchini they left it on each other's porches secretly. Lol. Blessings to you all

I agree. We have "stray" neighboring cats and they have been in the Lilly (aka bulb bed) and never had any issue. I would never put Lillies inside because the inside cats get curious and eat them (which is leads to poisoning). But the outside cats have more to be curious about.

I feel ya on the squash bugs and flea beetles. I’m in 7b here in Tennessee and this year I’ve spent all spring pulling off squash bugs, and eggs. I even found a couple random nymphs even though I pulled all the eggs off, and found squash bugs mating on my basil this year! I am experimenting with coffee grounds around the base of my plants because vine borers are an issue as well this year. Will let you know how it goes. I just put up with the flea beetles, they make the plants look awful but never have seen them kill a plant like the squash bugs do. Do you get japanese beetles at all? They are defoliating my berries and apple trees this year. Pests are a bummer, but would much rather have them then toxic chemicals!

I have always been curious of this: are your beds placed on the original soil? Or do they have a bottom in them like the boys' garden beds? You brought up cutting the kale and letting the roots break down (which requires worm activity), so it sparked me to finally get around to asking.

If you increase your predator population, the squash bugs will stay more in check. Consider hanging some bird feeders near by and some people will add a small pond or two (small being around 2-3 feet diameter usually) and place a few frogs and/or geckos. You’ll need to protect them with some large leafy perennials around the pond. Frogs and geckos love squash bugs and caterpillars and aphids. Birds of course love them as well.

Can’t beat fried okra. Slice and fry until the “slime” is almost gone, add a good dusting of cornmeal, season with salt. And pepper. Sooooooo yummy!

Jess, can you please type out the name of the melon you showed? I'm hard of hearing, but the captions said "bene kadima", but when I searched Google, nothing came up. I'm know sometimes captions aren't correct. I'm looking for a smaller melon due to space. Thank you! ❤️

sooo much wisdom and so many great tips thank you so much! I planted zinnias that were called candy cane, but they do not look anythinng like that, they all seem to be groving on a 70's looking theme, LOL...sorta oranges and yellows and creams and tomato reds, very cool, not what I was expecting, but that makes it neat! note to self, only a FEW plants on the trellis, not one at each square! sigh...they are all choking each other, getting some beans but not growing up like yours are....great learning experience..=)

I absolutely love the smell of basil. It’s almost transcendent for me. Putting a leaf on a tomato slice with a piece of mozzarella is just about perfect for me.

Patience. It will come in due time. The trellis with different sides is awesome. THOSE PUNKS!!!! (HAHA.. yeah they are, dumb squash bugs) Yep seems the growth of things here are 2 weeks behind you. My malabar spinach is sooo slow and heard they are until they start to vine. My melons are just still just young small plants.

Patience Grasshoppah..... ;) I'm really looking forward to seeing how your rattlesnake beans do, I've grown them the last couple of years. I can't seem to get the production I've come to expect from other beans like blue lake pole and kentucky pole beans. I like the flavor, it's a good tasting bean and the plants did fine in the southern middle tn heat but when I pick beans anything less than a 5 gallon bucket is a let down. I grow a lot of bush beans throughout the season as beds become empty. When you can get a 5 gallon bucket from a 4x8ft bed (32 sq ft) it makes the work of a 32 ft row of pole beans seem futile at times. Not to mention the pole beans take twice the time to mature as most bush varieties do.

I think Maya could make it. Make what looks like a wooden Birdcage over your Memorial bed. It would be unique, beautiful, and the bees would go in and out. Maybe something made out of wood scraps. Tiny slats not closed in. Even bear Willow branches. You know like the Victorian style bird cages. Blessings

Hey girlie, beautiful garden!! A little tip I've tried personally based on another friends recommendation...(I'm 100% committed to Organic methods too, 7A, Central AZ) started last year, put Organic flour on you squash, it stops the squash beetle and grasshoppers, basically it swells in their mouths and stomachs, so they can't continue on the leaves. It doesn't look so pretty though, and it has to be applied when wet to stick. The downfall I thought about, was not being able to absorb the sunlight, but I did NOT notice a stunting of the plants. And... Chia !!! It flowers chest height with gorgeous little happy bright blue flowers, it makes me snoopy dance 😄🤗 lol ! Much love~ 👍💙
