Don't know about Sheffield n Bryn being the only bombed cities up north. Manchester was bombed out from the middle 80's onwards.the buses were covered in tags and walls n bridges pieces full size pieces too. Can't say what Brum nSheff were like comparison to Manchester wise. Manchester had a busy graffiti scene like I said from 80's to today.

I know this is a Sheffield documentary, but does anyone know about the Graffiti on the bridge over the Canal and Railway at the former Croda Tar Distillers and Bitumen Works (Swinton, formerly called Yorkshire Tar Distillers, closed for good in 2000 and was 'cleaned up' for Housing to be built from 2012-2021)? If so, I first saw your Graffiti there in 2002, and it captivated me. I was Four years old and on a Walk with my Grandma.

Graffiti isn’t dying because it’s the voice of youth rebellion in the form of artistic expression, the foundation being the science of letterforms, while new kids emerge every year they can’t be held to the same standard because of the instant gratification that became the cultural norm in the environment they grew up in. 80’s and 90’s kids put their heart and soul into learning the craft which shows in their work. The tags, throws and pieces have a specific energy that any art enthusiast will be able to feel and not necessarily quantify. We can’t sell our graffiti on canvases or paper now but mark my words once we’re all dead and have dementia, Parkinson’s and all the other ailments that came from decades of reckless and self destruction sothebys will auction off the peices for hundreds and thousands of dollars which will be ironic given thats more money than law enforcement spent trying to suppress the same very same thing. Appreciate your seasoned graffiti artist while they are here and support them by buying work and giving words of encouragement and appreciation cause once we’re gonna that it. I mean during the Roman Empire it was common for people to carve statues from marble, but try and find someone to do that today! Good luck with that. You might think that analogy sounds like a stretch but when enough time passes and AI is generating all the artwork businesses are using you’ll think differently.
