My kids raised bottle calves when we lived in the city. We had an acre lot and the local ordinance let us have a couple of cows even though it was a typical city neighborhood. We would walk them on a leash in the evenings and got some pretty funny looks and comments. One dude stopped and asked us what kind of dog that was. Fun times in the city before we moved to the ranch!

A few years ago I went to buy breeding quality yearling heifers to breed and put on grass. I wanted 40-50 head depending on the price When I was done I had bought 71 I had to charge them at the auction market till I could get the money and my wife suggested I not have so much fun at the sale Nice thing was a brought my cattle liner with me to the sae and I was able to haul them all home in one trip. I now write down every draft I by so I don't get carried away.

hi Ryan I was just wondering do you guys buy any other calves than holestiens and if so what breeds. I live in Northern Ireland and we buy breeds like limousine but are prices would be alot high than yours I would expect over here for calves prices are from £200/£300 pounds. in dollars thats around $249/$374 or round about that would you guys ever pay that much for 1 calve?

The only farm experience I have is on a tobacco farm in NC way back. So since playing Farm Simulator 2017 your videos have become very interesting to me. A few questions...what city and state are in? How many acres do you have and how many head of cattle? How much does 20 new calves costs at auction? I have no idea and would like to have that point of reference. How do you not get emotionally attached to all the animals??
@lukestrawwalker7 жыл бұрын
They're in Wisconsin, near Potosi. He said that his average was about $100/hd in the video, so $2,400 for 24 calves.

@57fitter8 жыл бұрын
I would guess band them.
@iowadairyboysFarms8 жыл бұрын
Could. We have the vet come out and cut them and de horn them. That's on a small scale. They have 60 calves so they probably do band them and have there own thing to de-horn them.

Wow not much on comfort, are they? Had to laugh at the square sales ring in another video as well... and no drive-thru's to unload?? Gotta back up to the pens every time? Our sales barns down here have stadium seating-- granted they're usually movie theater seats out of old movie theaters from the 50's or something, but better than sitting on a flat wooden bleachers... Most of the sales rings have better seating, particularly for the buyers... Course we're in the heart of cattle country in Texas, and since Texas is about the leading beef cattle state, and our area is the heart of the Texas cow/calf country, well, our sales can easily go 10-12 hours or even longer, at times. Our sales rings are generally a half-round pen with the entry and exit doors on either side of the auctioneer's pit... Later! OL J R :)

rob reinert at that point they are not off the mothers tit yet so cost up to that point is pretty low. probably around 50 to 75 dollars now.
@gimpy32478 жыл бұрын
Don Hanson these are holstein bull calves. Most dairy farms sell them bc they are not useful to the farms these calves are probably less then a week old. They are most likely fed waste milk from the cows after they have gotten their colustrum.
@jamesbascombe82746 жыл бұрын
Tim Nephew that depends on the farm. Mine get milk replacer after the colostrum from their mother. I dont like to use waste milk. To much bacteria in it unless you use a pasteurizer which I don't have.
