This is a semi-historical scenario depicting the events surrounding the bombing and destruction of the Ludendorff bridge in Remagen on the 17th of March 1945. Historically, the bridge fell after 10 days of continued bombing by Axis bombers, including Ar-234s from III./KG76. Although in reality the bridge fell on its own in the afternoon of the 17th, the mission depicts what it would be like if the Germans were more successful with their Ar-234 strikes.
Please do have in mind that this is not supposed to be an accurate representation of reality. That is why the video title begins with "IL-2 1946". I am aware of IL-2s flaws and there is no need to tell me of them. This is just a rough approximation of what such a raid could have been like, no history lesson.

Great mission,very enjoyable to watch. I wish someone from the modding fraternity would be able to mod a working braking chute for the Ar 234,because i believe they did have them.

Ironically, drogue chute wire was modelled from the beginning in stock game (it can be seen under the tail). But not functional, alas.

You should make a request for it on the official foums they are still updating the game .. few devs and it's quite slow but it's still there it's already at patch 4.13.4 and another on is on it's way.. maybe they will implement it if you let them know. :)

Just discovered Fishyy's channel and your vids are amazing! Really great effort put into them - I appreciate the difficulties, especially with the many things that can go wrong on their own in IL2 (played the original for some years and saw some of your out-takes). I hope you keep them coming! .... but what really drove me to comment on this video is the start-up scene. A fuel bowser with Entzündlich clearly written on it and you start up two *jet* engines right next to it!! As if being a Luftwaffe pilot in 1945 wasn't exciting enough :))

I think this is a depiction of an attack on The Ludendorff Bridge (?) hence the low level and eventual target - just stumbled across the Fishyyy collection and trying to prevent it from reducing my work productivity and failing :) Great stuff - forgot about the Ar-234's rearward periscope and tail guns - the pilots were 1 armed paper hangers - a 1 man bomber team doing fly,navigate, bomb and defend ...!

One question: Why did you fly low? I might be wrong, but I don't really see an advantage to this tactical approach. You're attacking a stationary, relatively easy to hit target. Radar wouldn't have been much of an issue, even in 1946, so no real reason to fly "under the radar". I might be missing something, but to me it seems all flying low is doing is eating up more fuel and not only making you more vulnerable to FLAK, but also making it easier for enemy fighters to negate your speed advantage by diving on you.

Flying low, near the ground helps against detection as you arent contrasting against the sky. Fuel wasn't an issue in this strike so they could do it. Flying low to the ground is actually the hardest thing for flak to shoot, as they don't turn very quickly compared to the plane. Level bombing from a higher altitude would have been less accurate and opened them up to more accurate AA fire.

Also with the speed advantage and being in a highly maneuverable aircraft like the 234, I believe it was a tactic by 234 pilots to attack from low level.

@@Minong_Manitou_Mishepeshu Apart from a rear facing MG the Arado's main defence was its speed, a propeller regardless of how its driven would have reduced its main defensive attribute, why reduce performance and add complexity with a turbo prop? The future for military aircraft was clearly going to be turbojets and the Luftwaffe anticipated this, a turbo prop would not have increased its reliability so at this time there seems little merit to this kind of propulsion or to go down another developmental route for the turbo jet.

​@@Minong_Manitou_Mishepeshu You are not vectoring in contra-rotating props of the TU95, also the size weight of the Arado and thrust produced by then available jet engines, it still doesn't address the development time required to implement this as a solution. Given its power to weight a turboprop would have been considerably worse, the German's took inspiration from the De Havilland Mosquito's defence of speed against its contemporaries, the turbojet gave the 234 the same defence over propellers.
