Actually it's a real product. They even put a ban on it in the US because of the way it aerosols the fragrances. Smell is a tricky one to mimic. There is no RGB or elemental chart of smells to mix and match to make what you want. This means you have to pre make and preload each and every smell you want to experience. This limita you to potentially only about dozen. Then you have to change them all for each new experience. Hard to make practical

idk, I think we could see a full dive prototype in a decade. And I doubt that we will need to wait more than 3 decades tops. As far as haptics, if you are willing to pay enough, we are practically there as he points out. there are other similar technologies he didn't mention that are also important in haptic too, like movement restraining exo-skeletons that can simulate stuff like grip and stairs. They can also be mounted in a groscope to simulate acceleration to a degree. Honestly, with the technology we currently have, I think we will start to see 5-sense games in another 5-10 years. And shortly after that I expect we will start to see more experiments in trying to acheive full dive neural links. And there is some really promising work being done in the neuro science field related to how our brain function. Numenta has actually pioneered a number of breakthroughs just in the last two years, greatly expanding our understanding of the neocortex.

@Firestar-rm8df4 жыл бұрын
@Alonso Reyes yeah, but eye tracking can only be pushed so far before you start to introduce latency. Then again, at the current rate of advancement with dedicated hardware ASICs, maybe we could get it to a negligible point? Idk though. We'd have to hit milliseconds of latency, ideally sub millisecond. Though, I would be excited if an algorithm both fast and reliable enough were to be produced. Ultimately though, I really doubt that eye tracking will develop before other optimizations, technologies, and interfaces at the current rate. Who knows, we might even get a BCI before eye tracking is low-latency enough. According to the data I've seen a maximum error of 16.67 ms at 60 Hz or 8.33 ms at 120 Hz has been recorded after adjusting for some error (apparently about +500 ms before that) so I'm not sure which numbers are more accurate there. And that appears to be with a error of around 1.5 degrees of inaccuracy in the estimated rotation of the eye? The articles on tracking accuracy are even more confusing than the latency papers. Anyway, when a single frame is 0.011 secs(11 ms) @90 fps, that kind of latency and accuracy is still dubious at best in terms of usability imo. Still, if other pursuits take to long to start paying off, this might be an optimization to consider. I still think parallelization is the answer in the short term, and Ray tracing is a good step in the right direction for that, but we also need more games programmed with parallelism in mind for things that the engine can't handle as automatically as textures. Things like inventory systems and AI agents need to be built with this stuff in mind. Caching also seems to be underutilized often, and I think that optimizing fundamentally sequential code to utilize the cache better could lead to better performance as well. Of course, it depends on the problem yet too though. Sometimes the best solution really is a hash table with constant time lookups, but that means random memory targets, which hurts the lookup time of certain collections of data, unless a smart referencing/indexing scheme is used, but that adds a lot of overhead and is basically a database at that point, and still can't super aggressively optimize cache. More code that operates in loops to do simple operations with dynamic data against constants can also be optimized by taking advantage of registers, but often times code isn't necessarily written to support this optimization easily. Sometimes you will see programmers try to lead the compiler to make the optimization though by creating a local variable just before the loop and hoisting it to try to get the compiler to catch the optimization. Unity recently got support for making that exact optimization with their new DOTS architecture.
