Yes! This video was amazing! The "rise your elbow" technique made a night and day difference for me. I was getting ready to sharpen my urban bowie and pretty sure i was gonna eff it up, especially the tip. On the contrary, after raising my elbow the scratch patterns got super even and the new edge is VERY symmetrical. Got a long way to go before i can put a polish on my blades but I'm so much happier with my results. This video is a MUST if you're new to sharpening. Thanks man, great video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Such a great sharpening vid especially for beginners and a few tricks that some older sharpeners can use. The sharpening stone types will be very helpful and focusing on getting a working edge first is a great first step. Getting a high mirror polish is what alot of sharpeners chase but it's not the right edge type for many steels where all steels will do great at a medium finish. Perfect one step at a time and practicing on good steel is the best choice. I'd suggest something in 14C28N for beginners it's a steel that is hard for manufacturers to screw up, because of how easy it's heat treated, and can be found for around $30 and up in Folders, fixed blades and kitchen knives. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

Hell yeah I just ordered a Tsprof kadet with the Venev Beta Centauri stone kit. Also a kangaroo leather strop, some gunny diamond emulsion, Tsprof small universal table for sharpening other tools, the Tsprof convex mini adapter, and a digital angle gauge. All my knives have gone mostly dull from improper maintenance. Now ALL my knives will STAY stay sharp AF!! Thanks Neeves, I took all your advice when I bough my first system. And continue to follow along with all your sharpening content. Nice graphics too BTW! This guide is on point 💪🏻💪🏻 Edit: ALMOST got the tormek system. And I still may one day. I’ve had a wicked edge, KME, Sypderco sharpmaker, and several more. I’ve not found one I’m happy with because they all take a good amount of setup time or are finicky. After using this tutorial and lots of practice I’m finally getting results I’m happy with. Hello Jerad. Pretty good sharpening tutorial. Congrats There are a few technical details you got wright most people don't. Maybe you know about them and didn't mention or maybe you got an excellent method through practical experience. Edge trailing is not that good at removing burr. A microburr you cannot feel will always remain unless you do some weird techniques like high angle passes or 90 degree passes. Diamond stones cut fast but tend to fracture carbides. Edge may be perfectly formed but ruptured carbides act as facture initiation points and reduce edge durability. Diamond on strops on the other hand don't fracture carbides and help to fully remove the microburr left while edge trailing. This choice dealt with both problems at the same time. Most people tend to use it with micron and sub micron paste on strops. That will leave the edge too polished and loose bite. 6 micron seems leave a very good finish for general purpose. There are a few points you got wrong tho. Natural stones usually have 7 Mohs. Transtaling that to HRC that would be around 70 HRC. It's hard enough to cut any steel. If the steel has hard carbides it will abrade them by rounding and result in an exposed carbide edge. An Arkansas stone probably will be slow cutting when dealing with high carbide content steels but will easily work as a finishing stone on a knife already apexed. Aluminum oxide is softer than vanadium carbides but, due to some weird physics I don't understand, it actually make clean cuts on these carbides. There are electron microscopy images on science of Sharp showing that. Source for carbide rupture by diamonds and exposed carbide by natural stone is also Science of Sharp. Highly recommend site. For some tasks an edge finer than what you did or with even more bite may perform better. I recommend to try finishing edge leading on coarse stone with very low pressure. It can be sharp enough to shave hair or cut paper towel on a 320 stone and it feels completely different from polished edge. This seems specially promising for rope cutting and barbecue.

A nice low maintenance free hand set is the FallKniven DC521, and a strop. About $100, and it'll take care of just about all straightedge blades. If you need something with a heavier grit for correcting really damaged edges, throw in an Extra course DMT. That'll cover everything not serrated or with a heavy recurve.

You say simple steels and carbon steels are right for sharpening on water stones and diamond impregnated stones. Are those most typical blades like D2, Nitro V, S35vn, etc? Thanks for the video!
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives Жыл бұрын
you basically can sharpen steels up to s35vn on those kind of stones, its the high wear resistant high carbide volume steels that pose issues, however d2 is a little tricky because they have such large carbides so i would do that steel on diamond, all steels can be sharpened on diamond. natural stones and aluminum oxide might give a better edge on carbon steels but you can still do it.

Hey, jerrad. Great video! I really appreciate all of the help with sharpening tips and everything you do. I've got a question in regards to sharpening. I'm quite new. I bought some Stones a couple weeks ago and I've been trying to get better at hand sharpening. One issue I'm noticing is that I don't end up with the thin and fine wire Burr like yours. Mine end up feeling quite thick and not really movable. Would that be a symptom of something that I am doing incorrectly? Or could it just be that I'm using crappy steel because I'm trying to learn with crappy old knives like Gerber and huntshield?

@@austinbolton1047 dont get the kme, i would recommend either Hapstone, Worksharp/ or Tsprof pioneer, i promise you will be happy you spent a little more the kme uses 4 inch stones while these ones are 6 inch, also you can always add more to these systems in the future to make them better and better and to do more, def stick with diamonds, theres different grades of diamonds, the best would be venev resin bonded, but you can get hapstone starts or atoma. if you stick with freehand i do think that i will pay off in the end you can always get a fixed system in future but the muscle memory and ability to sharpen free hand is priceless imo

I want to pick up a set of diamond stones, but am wondering if you prefer/recommend the 2" x 6" Ultra Sharp II stones or the 3" x 8" Ultra Sharp stones. Is there any difference in the quality of the Ultra Sharp and Ultra Sharp II stones? Is there another brand you recommend over the Ultra Sharp brand? It looks like these sets comes with 300, 600, 1200 grit diamond stones; however, I usually sharpen my knives to 600 grit and then strop from there. So, is it worth going to the 1200 grit before stroping? Also, are there other grit stones that would be more useful (e.g., 140 grit, 300/400 grit, and 600/800 grit) than what is included in the set? Thanks for providing such great videos!
@NeevesKnives

If you can get the big ones they will last you much longer, I recommend the small ones if you can't afford the big ones. The best is Atoma plates as far as diamond plates go. 300 grit is fine as a first stone, but the 140 grit is better as it will last so much longer as a starting stone it needs a bit of break in time but it turns into the best starting plate you can buy, it's not a bad idea to get the 3 pack of Ultra sharp and one 140 atoma, or just get all atoma but it's expensive, as far as going to 1200 no you don't need to you can and some steels do a bit better with a finer grit but not needed unless you want a polishing stone in the future then you will need it to progress to a polish

I have those. They work great. They are not so good for really small chisels and almost useless for a pointed tool, but they work great on knives and average chisels. I heard the extra extra fine isn't really worth it, plus a strop with a higher grit compound basically does the same thing, so I got extra extra coarse, extra coarse, coarse, fine and extra fine. Plus got the yellow 6 micron diamond honing paste for my suede side of the strop and just use green honing wax on the smooth side. You can get a hair-whittling edge with these. I've done it.

Not necessarily, as long as your creating a burr on the entire edge is what's important, that burr was that way because of the heat treatment not all will act like that.

Soft tough steels have some incredibly difficult to remove burrs. They just don't break, much like the steel. A trick is to do a super light pass at an increased angle to cut the burr and then back sharpen your original angle up to the apex again, careful not to overdo it.

I've come here with a problem that been gnawing at me for a month. The KA-BAR fighting, Utility and the Buck 119. Every other knife in my collection, even a recurve Kukri that I had, I was able to sharpen to a point where, at minimum, I could get the blade to cleanly slice paper, if not shave hairs off my arm with ease. When it comes to my KA-BAR and my Buck 119, I've tried everything!!! Oil stones, diamond stones, and God forbid a pull-through sharpener. I still can't get even a half way decent edge. I used to be able to sharpen knives in 5 minutes to great effect, but these 2 particular knives have seemingly defeated me. My one and only marketable skill was knife sharpening, and I think I've once and for all lost my touch.

Maybe the toughness of those two steels and heat treats are making an almost unremovable burr? You could try doing a light pass at an increased angle to try to cut off the burr, and make a micro bevel, then go back to your original angle and bring it back to the tip without overdoing. Super tough lower hardness steels have burrs that just don't break..

@mikafoxx2717 since making my original comment, I fixed the issue. I've come to realize that my free-hand sharpening skills are not as good as they once were, so I used a clamp and base from a Lansky system to hold the knife, but then used a Sharpal dual grit diamond sharpening paddle to sharpen and hone the blade, then with the knife still in the clamp, I used a paddle strop to polish... ...The end result? A razor sharp Ka-Bar and Buck.

What grit diamond stone do you recommend for high quality German knives? DMT coarse (~300 grit), fine (~600 grit) and extra fine (~1200 grit) are the options. I see people using the coarse alot, is that too aggressive for kitchen knives? But is 600 too fine?

You should always start with a coarse, if there's no damage you can start with a medium but it's always faster Startin with a coarse then you can finish on a medium or fine

@@NeevesKnives Thanks. So if the edge is in perfect condition (no damage, but dull), would you start with 600 grit or 300? I'm about to drop some $ on stones, so would be nice to know which to get and which to skip. My kitchen knives are Wusthof and I don't want to risk messing them up with the wrong stones. I will practice on my cheap knives first no matter what stones I get. thanks

id prefer to start at 400 but yes a 600 can work just takes longer, if the edge is very thin then it will go faster, its mostly just time, however the faster things go in most cases the better the results as you wont be fatigued

I start on an extra coarse. It's not going to hurt anything. If it takes more than 9 or 10 passes to get a burr all the way down, I'll even use extra extra coarse. It depends what shape your knife is in on what stone you want to start with bro. It's not so black and white like "definitely use exactly a 400 mesh stone to start with, no more, no less". Use what's needed so you don't have to make 1,000 passes and wear your stone down. That's what you're trying to accomplish.

@@eee2115You aren't going to mess them up in a way that you can't fix unless you're stupidly laying them totally flat and grinding away. Don't be so scared. Have confidence.

Unless you've got a knife you want to sell on day with a clean looking attractive edge, just use a ceramic rod.

No they don't, and have been proven not to, they can cut the steel but not the carbides, so the carbides hand out in a microscopic level

Are you serious looking down your nose at people in this picture? You never had a good person tell you that's what arrogant thugs do? That pic is worth a thousand words that's for sure. My goodness man tell people to use there own natural angle for all their life on all knives not finding all makers angles. Oops sorry you're a perfect human
