Yes, it matters that 40 babies were not beheaded on Oct 7, in the same way that it matters that the claims about weapons of mass destruction, during the lead up to the Iraq war, turned out to be completely bogus. It matters because, like Iraq and the WMDs that have never been found, those non-existent 40 beheaded babies, and the claims of mass rape, have been used by Israel as justification for their genocide in Gaza, so it should matter to you as a journalist that these claims have been roundly debunked and there has not been any solid proof brought forward for those claims, yet are still being peddled by pro-Israelis to justify 40,000 + Palestininans being killed.
